Review Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure [1999] / 2 Entertain Video:In Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure, our guide follows in Hemingway's footsteps through Europe, Africa, and the United States in an effort to learn more about what made the literary giant tick. Palin's fascination with Ernest Hemingway began when he was growing up reading tales of fishing, hunting, drinking and other adventurous pursuits. His reading gave him the first taste of the wider world, and inspired in him a love of travel that would lead to his journeys such as Pole to Pole and Full Circle. Beginning in the suburbs of Chicago, then heading to Italy, Paris, Pamplona and Cuba, Palin soaks up the atmosphere-and a daiquiri or two-in many of Papa's favourite haunts. He has an obvious affection for his subject, but he remains as irreverent as ever, whether he's trying (and failing) to shoot ducks in a freezing Italian lake or trying (and failing) to get an audience with Fidel Castro in Havana. Although it lacks the "Will he make it?" excitement of the earlier series, the relatively leisurely pace of this journey allows Palin to dig a little deeper into his subject. He has an extraordinary knack for finding fascinating people on his travels, and his unassuming style encourages them to open up in front of the camera. The Hemingway trail offers particularly rich pickings, including a centenarian boxer who sparred with Hemingway and a gathering of portly, bearded Papa lookalikes in a Key West bar. Moving easily from the hilarious (tales of Hemingway sailing sans underwear) to the moving (describing the writer's last days from the room where he died), Palin is the perfect travel companion, and this is his most personal journey yet. -Simon Leake.

Review Ancient Rome - A Journey Back In Time [1998] / Cromwell Productions:Ancient Rome: A Journey Back in Time is part of a documentary series entitled "Lost Treasures of the Ancient World", presumably produced for educational use. It provides an overview of Rome, its notable monuments, and some of the historical events that gave rise to them. The programme is a little haphazard in structure, jumping about from subject to subject: from an architectural survey of the Forum and Colosseum, gladiators, the role of women, the character of Augustus' wife Livia, the ambitions of the first triumvirate and Virgilian poetry all follow one another in quick succession. Footage of modern Rome (sadly, the camera crew seems to have visited on a grey and overcast day) is interspersed with some monochromatic computer animated reconstructions and a handful of actors in togas. The voiceovers of the assembled talking heads occasionally juxtapose awkwardly with the images: when talking about women in politics we are presented with a pornographic wall painting from a brothel in Pompeii; as soon as it is asserted that no individual other than emperors ever left his name on a major public building, we are shown the front of the Pantheon carrying Marcus Agrippa's name (admittedly, it was put there in an act of modesty by Hadrian). The splendours of the Pantheon are rightly dwelt upon at length, but it looks like the camera crew failed to gain permission to go inside, as no footage of the awe-inspiring interior is seen here. Overall this is a straightforward survey of Rome's major monuments, likely to be of interest to visitors intending to travel there for the first time or for students beginning a study of Roman history. -Mark Walker.
