Review The Last Days Of Frankie The Fly [1996] / Marquee Pictures:Seemingly made by people whose only previous experience of movies was watching Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction over and over again, The Last Days of Frankie the Fly is nonetheless a competent time-passer in a "Tarantino, this is all your fault" kind of way. Frankie (Dennis Hopper) is already disgruntled with life as a small-time gopher for mob-captain Sal (Michael Madsen), when he meets Margaret (Daryl Hannah), an equally depressed porn star whose one burning desire is to become a serious actress (and what, end up in films like this?). With his ardour for Margaret as a catalyst, Frankie decides to make one last desperate bid to get out of the game-and into a career as a Hollywood scriptwriter. While this wiseguy-with-a-heart caper never rises far above the level of fodder, Madsen and Hopper at least have fun with their QT-patented smart-ass dialogue, and Kiefer Sutherland delivers one of his most genuinely demented performances ever as a troubled Mafia foot soldier (which, for Kiefer Sutherland, is really saying something). At its murky-pool-rooms-and-porn-sets best, The Last Days of Frankie the Fly could almost be a remodelling of John McNaughton's criminally underrated Mad Dog and Glory; at its formulaic worst, it's simply yet another drab Tarantino clone. -Danny Leigh.

Review The Fan [1996] / Entertainment in Video:Lurid thrillers don't get much more shameless than this movie, in which Robert De Niro plays a pathological baseball fan whose obsession is focused on a San Francisco Giants all-star outfielder (Wesley Snipes). While the newly signed baseball star is having trouble getting his favourite uniform number from a competitive teammate (Benicio Del Toro), De Niro is having career troubles at the knife company his father founded, and you can bet that his proximity to high-quality stainless-steel blades will be a factor in the suspenseful plot. Recycling parts of his maniacal roles in Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy and Cape Fear, De Niro takes his idolatry to violent extremes, eliminating any obstacle to Snipes' stardom until the baseball hero is forced to confront his most terrifying devotee. Directed with brutal excess and souped-up style by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide), this manipulative nail-biter pulls all the right strings in predictable fashion, but it does have moments that are effectively intense. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.

Review Witness [1985] / Paramount Home Entertainment:When Samuel (Lukas Haas), a young Amish boy travelling with his mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis), witnesses the murder of a police officer in a public restroom, he and his mother become the temporary wards of John Book (Harrison Ford), a detective who's been assigned to solve the crime. After suspect line-ups and mug-shot books yield nothing, Samuel, in the most memorable scene of the film, recognises the murderer as a narcotics agent whose picture he sees in the precinct. Once Book realizes that the police chief is in on it, too, he whisks Samuel and Rachel back home to Amish country, where he himself goes into hiding as a plain Amish man. The juxtaposition between the life of the Amish and the violence of inner-city police corruption work surprisingly well for the story, and Kelly McGillis as the falling in love widow gives an almost perfect performance. Directed by Peter Weir, the film is extremely successful in drawing the viewer into its world and, accordingly, is immensely entertaining. The only thing that mars its polish is the one-dimensional, almost cartoonish handling of the upper-echelon police corruption-a subtler, more realistic treatment of this aspect of the story would have rendered the film near perfect. -James McGrath, Amazon. com.

Review Assassins / The Specialist [1995] / Warner Home Video:If Sylvester Stallone plays the world's number one assassin in this thriller, that must make Antonio Banderas, well, number two. The two are competing to hit the same target for a $20-million payoff and their challenge takes them from explosion to explosion on a cat-and-mouse chase from Seattle to Mexico. Julianne Moore plays the cagey cat fancier and computer hacker who possesses a stolen computer disc that makes her a prime target for bad guys, and Robert Rath (Stallone)is only too happy to come to her defense. Director Richard Donner handles action sequences with adequate flair and has a good time blowing things up. Banderas has fun with the nonsensical plot, and Moore is enjoyable in one of her big-budget mainstream roles. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Long Goodbye [1973] / MGM Entertainment:Raymond Chandler's cynically idealistic hero of The Long Goodbye, Philip Marlowe, has been played by everyone from Humphrey Bogart to James Garner-but no one gives him the kind of weirdly affect-less spin that Elliott Gould does in this terrific Robert Altman reimagining of Chandler's penultimate novel. Altman recasts Marlowe as an early 70s Los Angeles habitué, who gets involved in a couple of cases at once. The most interesting involves a suicidal writer (Sterling Hayden in a larger-than-life performance) whom Marlowe is supposed to keep away from malevolent New-Ageish guru Henry Gibson. A variety of wonderfully odd characters pop up, played by everyone from model Nina Van Pallandt to director Mark Rydell to ex-baseballer Jim Bouton. And yes, that is Arnold Schwarzenegger (in only his second movie) popping up as (what else?) a muscleman. Listen for the title song: it shows up in the strangest places. -Marshall Fine.
