Review Babylon 5 - River Of Souls / Warner Home Video:At the core of the Babylon 5 series there ran a genuinely intriguing theme concerning the nature of the soul. Ultimately many viewers came to realise it was both the strength and weakness of the show. During the first three seasons a mystery unfolded linking past with present to hint at a universal destination for the soul beyond death. When this became all-but forgotten, the sensation of having been cheated lasted until the end. There were scattered references, but the biggest allusion back to the spiritual philosophising was this third TV movie. In the second episode of Season 1 ("Soul Hunter"), we were introduced to a race who collected the worthiest of souls for preservation. Five years later, that race gets showcased again in a story involving the theft of something belonging to them. Martin Sheen guest stars as the Hunter trying to retrieve it from Ian (Lovejoy) McShane's archaeological thief. Chronologically, this is after the main timeline of the station's story. There is no Sheridan, Delenn, Londo, or G'Kar to provide dramatic support. [+]
Instead there's a risqué sub-plot about an illegal holo-brothel, which is really just an excuse to see Tracy Scoggins as Captain Lochley in lingerie and using a "lovebat"(!) It's not as coherent a movie as either In the Beginning or Thirdspace, and almost seems like an apology for forgetting what made things fascinating to begin with. At the very least The River of Souls may be appreciated for not taking itself too seriously. -Paul Tonks.

Review The X Files : Season 4 Box Set / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:As with earlier releases, The X-Files: Providence splices together two episodes, "Provenance" and "Providence", into a pseudo-movie. Again, the results fall way below the series average as the long-dead alien conspiracy business is flogged, with a lot of running around and ominous rumbling still not adding up to anything like an actual story. FBI agent Neal McDonaugh (of Minority Report) inexplicably survives a flaming motorcycle crash, leaving behind brass rubbings taken from an alien spaceship, then shows up and tries to murder Scully's psychokinetic baby, who is promptly kidnapped by a UFO cult. In Part 2, Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) fend off enemies and friends within the bureau as they track down the cultists, who are having trouble with a spaceship they've dug up, and a typical pointless climax has things happen without the characters doing anything to contribute. Even at this late, post-Duchovny stage in the game, The X-Files has turned out some fine stand-alone episodes, but these dreary wallowings go a long way towards explaining why only diehards are still watching. After the child says "I made this" at the end of the credits, it's becoming very hard not to shout "well, clean it up then". On the DVD: The X-Files: Providence, as with Nothing Important Happened Today, arrives in a great-looking anamorphic widescreen transfer. There are two slight promotional "featurettes"-three-minute clips/talking heads promos focusing on the episode "Providence" and actor Cary Elwes' character. -Kim Newman.

Review The New Avengers - Issue 2 - Vol. 2 - The Lion And The Unicorn / Obsession / Trap / Hostage [1976] / Contender Entertainment Group:Sometimes dismissed as a pale descendant of a great original, The New Avengers deserves a second look and is perhaps best considered as a largely successful attempt to re-imagine its predecessor for 1970s audiences. Patrick McNee was never the most convincing of action heroes, and the decision to make his John Steed the supervisor and mentor of two younger agents was a sensible one-Steed's virtues are style, wisdom and fortitude rather than physical prowess. Gareth Hunt's Gambit has an unattractively smug side, but has also a louche charm. Joanna Lumley's Purdey is one of the most attractive heroines of genre television, astonishingly leggy and beautiful. Those who only know her later incarnation as Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous will understand now why such a fuss is made over her. The script team overlaps heavily with that of the original series; the new show has the same quirkiness, only occasionally varying it with a rather darker leCarrésque complexity or sudden outbreaks of Hammer Horror. If it lacks some of the sheer style of the original, that is a reflection of its period-the 1970s were less visually imaginative than the 60s. Tightly plotted, imaginatively cast with interesting guest stars, it is only with The Avengers that The New Avengers suffers by comparison. -Roz Kaveney.

Review Star Trek : Deep Space Nine - Vol. 4.1 - Way of the Warrior [1995] / Paramount Home Entertainment:From the outset, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was about conflict. Producers Rick Berman and Michael Piller challenged the utopian ideals of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek universe to create something totally different from its predecessors. That meant no familial camaraderie, squeaky-clean Federation diplomacy, or beige décor. Instead they wanted interpersonal friction, ruthless enemies (Gamma Quadrant Imperialists-The Dominion) and rebellion at every turn. The DS9 concept was originally facilitated by introducing the Cardassian/Bajoran war during The Next Generation's final days. After a muted first reception fans gradually came to accept the new look, but no one liked Star Trek without a starship and eventually the producers capitulated to viewers' wishes by introducing the USS Defiant (an apt name) in Season 3. Relying far less on technobabble than TNG, DS9 was unafraid to focus on matters of the spirit instead, demonstrating a ballsy independence from its parent shows. Taking up the gauntlet thrown down by Babylon 5, improved CGI space battles also became a fan favourite. Throughout the increasingly serialised story arc there were rebellious factions within the different establishments: Kira had belonged to the Shakaar resistance cell; the Maquis was Starfleet vs Cardassians; section 31 was a secret Starfleet group; the True Way was a Bajoran group opposed to peace; the Cardassians had their Obsidian Order and the Romulans their Gestapo-like Tal Shiar. Yet for all its constant bickering and espionage (even Bashir got to be James Bond), there was always some contemporary social commentary lurking: the Ferengi were used as a comedic foil to frown on materialistic greed; drugs were looked at via the Jem'Hadar foot soldiers' addiction to Ketracel White. [+]
Perhaps Sisko summed up the real heart of things: "Bajor doesn't need a man, it needs a legend". A future vision that retains a place for religion and spirituality turned out to be Deep Space Nine's first best destiny. -Paul Tonks.
