Review Star Trek Voyager - Vol. 6.9 (Spirit Folk/Ashes To Ashes) [1996] / Paramount Home Entertainment:Star Trek: Voyager, the first Trek spin-off to be made without any input at all from Gene Roddenberry, made its debut in 1995 and quickly established itself both as markedly different from cosmic cousin Deep Space Nine and as the successor to The Next Generation. Despite a lack of originality in its premise (Lost in Space anyone?), Voyager has none the less often been a bigger ratings success than any of its predecessors. Catapulted unwittingly to the far-flung Delta Quadrant, the crew of the Federation vessel Voyager must try somehow to get back home. The ghost of Katherine Hepburn lives on in Kate Mulgrew's forceful Captain Janeway, who has an equivocal (does she, doesn't she fancy him?) relationship with first officer and Native American-lite Chakotay (Robert Beltran). Tim Russ gives possibly the franchise's first fully realistic (yawn) portrayal of a Vulcan, and to enhance the alien quotient there is cuddly chef Neelix (Ethan Phillips). Garret Wang must have drawn the short straw for character development, since his Harry Kim is never imbued with any of the drama of rebellious pilot chum Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), who even gets the series' only romance with the seemingly inescapable resident half-breed B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson). Until the fourth season, the fan favourite was the straight-funny man role of Robert Picardo's nameless Doctor. Then, with the brave Borg storyline "Scorpion Part 2", a serious improvement in the show's behind-the-scenes thinking introduced actress Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, who immediately upped sex appeal and viewing numbers. There have been some oddities and errors along the way, such as the disappearance of cast regular Kes, the appearance of semi-regular Naomi Wildman, and various Holodeck obsessions with Leonardo Da Vinci, a smoky bar, and an "Oirish" village. None the less, flashes of brilliance still emerge, while Jerry Goldsmith's graceful theme always opens the show in style. [+]
-Paul TonksOn this tape: The Voyager producer's obsession with stereotypical French and Irish Holodeck stories continue to fill the mid-sixth season. In "Spirit Folk", the inhabitants of Fair Haven become suspicious of Voyager's crew playing God with their lives, but it is over-familiar territory for Trek. In "Ashes to Ashes", the mid-season B-plot stories continue when Harry Kim is given a second chance with his estranged lover whom he believed was dead. In the end, though, life on ship inevitably returns to normal. -Colin Neal.

Review The Tenth Kingdom / Warner Vision International:The Tenth Kingdom, an epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning screenwriter of Gulliver 's Travels, was a ratings failure when broadcast on US television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one's leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the "Fairy Tale Zone"; nine kingdoms populated by characters from fairy tales of yore. They team up with a dog who's really a prince-Wendell, grandson of Snow White-changed into canine form by the evil Queen (Dianne Wiest), who plots to usurp Wendell's throne. Father, daughter, and his royal dogness are relentlessly pursued through the nine kingdoms by the Troll King (Ed O'Neill) and his three bumbling and horrible children, and the conflicted Wolf (Scott Cohen), who is allied with the Queen but, with the aid of some Oprah-esque self-help books, tames his inner beast and falls in love with Virginia. The Tenth Kingdom is also a special effects extravaganza. There is indeed, as one character marvels, "magic to behold". But despite the Hallmark brand name and the presence of a grown-up Snow White (Camryn Manheim) and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), bewitched animals, magic mirrors and trolls, this is not kid's stuff. It can get scary, surprisingly violent and quite intense, just like real fairy tales. -Donald Liebenson, Amazon. [+]

Review The New Avengers - Mission Three Of Four : (3 complete and uncut episodes) - Cat Amongst The Pigeons / Target ! / Gnaws (Tv-Series) (1976] / Contender Entertainment Group:Sometimes dismissed as a pale descendant of a great original, The New Avengers deserves a second look and is perhaps best considered as a largely successful attempt to re-imagine its predecessor for 1970s audiences. Patrick McNee was never the most convincing of action heroes, and the decision to make his John Steed the supervisor and mentor of two younger agents was a sensible one-Steed's virtues are style, wisdom and fortitude rather than physical prowess. Gareth Hunt's Gambit has an unattractively smug side, but has also a louche charm. Joanna Lumley's Purdey is one of the most attractive heroines of genre television, astonishingly leggy and beautiful. Those who only know her later incarnation as Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous will understand now why such a fuss is made over her. The script team overlaps heavily with that of the original series; the new show has the same quirkiness, only occasionally varying it with a rather darker leCarrésque complexity or sudden outbreaks of Hammer Horror. If it lacks some of the sheer style of the original, that is a reflection of its period-the 1970s were less visually imaginative than the 60s. Tightly plotted, imaginatively cast with interesting guest stars, it is only with The Avengers that The New Avengers suffers by comparison. -Roz Kaveney.
