Review V - The Final Battle - Part 2 [1984] / Warner Home Video:In its day, V was a monumental event that for one generation remains a pop culture touchstone. Close Encounters of the Third Kind may have reassured us that perhaps we have nothing to fear from alien visitors and E. T. introduced us to a benign extra-terrestrial who only wanted to go home, but Kenneth Johnson's 1983 television miniseries knew better. Visitors who claim to come in peace are revealed to be nothing but reptilians in human skin bent on human conversion and conquest. As in the dark days of Fascism, some collaborate with the enemy; others form the Resistance. At the time, the epic scale of this production was unprecedented. The special effects are still awesome: those 50 mother ships that hover over the Earth's major cities anticipate Independence Day by more than a decade. Less so is the often-hackneyed dialogue. But thanks to their signature roles, the mostly no-star cast (most of whom would be reunited for a sequel and subsequent television series) have ensured themselves standing invitations to sci-fi conventions for the rest of their lives. Marc "Beastmaster" Singer is cameraman-turned-freedom fighter Mike Donovan; Julie Parrish is a medical student-turned-Resistance leader; Richard Herd is the Visitor's Supreme Commander ("Call me John"); Jane Bradler is Diana, the ravishing, but ruthlessly ambitious Visitor Science Officer; Leonardo Cimino lends dignity to his heavy-handed allegorical role as a Holocaust survivor. Look for a pre-Freddy Krueger Robert Englund as one of the aliens. -Donald Liebenson, Amazon. com.

Review Alien 3 [1992] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:Directed by stylemaster David Fincher, who went on to greater things with Seven and Fight Club, Alien 3 was the least successful of the Alien series at the box-office. Ripley, the only survivor of her past mission, awakens on a prison planet in the far corners of the solar system. As she tries to recover, she realises that not only has an alien got loose on the planet, the alien has implanted one of its own within her. As she battles the prison authorities (and is aided by the prisoners) in trying to kill the alien, she must also cope with a distinctly shortened life span that awaits her. But the striking imagery makes for muddled action and the script confuses it further. The ending looks startling but it takes a long time-and a not particularly satisfying journey-to get there. -Marshall Fine, Amazon. com On the DVD: The clarity of the digital picture throws light into some of Fincher's darker recesses, but is unkind to the primitive computer animation (the CGI alien is never convincing). Compared to the Alien DVD there are few extras, although a "making of" featurette that covers all three movies is included.

Review Fortress [1994] / 4 Front Video:The story of Fortress takes place in drastically overpopulated America of the year 2017, where each woman is allowed only one pregnancy. John Brennick (Christopher Lambert) and his wife Karen (Loryn Locklin) flee to Mexico when she becomes pregnant after the death of their first child. They are captured by border police and sent to the Fortress, a subterranean high-security prison owned by the Men-Tel corporation and operated by "Zed-10", an omnipotent computer system, and a sadistic, genetically "enhanced" warden (Kurtwood Smith) who has nefarious plans involving Brennick's wife and unborn child. Along with his cellmates (including Jeffrey Combs, a favourite of director Stuart Gordon), Brennick plots a breakout and Fortress shifts into auto-pilot action mode. After making his reputation with such audacious horror films as From Beyond and Re-Animator, Stuart Gordon graduated to a bigger budget with Fortress but his penchant for exploitation remains deliriously intact. While borrowing elements from a variety of better sci-fi movies, Fortress indulges every prison-flick cliché, but does it with such enjoyable B-movie vigour that it qualifies as a bona-fide guilty pleasure (indeed, it deserves to be ranked with James Cameron's original Terminator in terms of its budgetary ingenuity). Featuring such giddy (and gory) devices as "intestinators" (deadly obedience devices implanted in prisoners' bodies) and a torturous "Mind Wipe Chamber", this is really just a drive-in action movie with lofty ambitions and the schlocky script hasn't a prayer of rising above the level of juvenile popcorn fodder. But there's no denying the energy and enthusiasm that Gordon brings to the film, which understandably became a global box-office hit and spawned a 1999 sequel starring Lambert and Pam Grier. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.
