The Robbie Williams Show is the first of many products which EMI hope will recompense them for their huge investment in Robbie. Stylised as a kitschy 1960s light entertainment special, and recorded on one of the James Bond stages at Pinewood Studios, the show opens in a spectacular manner with 80 dancers perched behind the star on a 60 ft scaffolding set. Produced as a "live" and intimate TV special to promote the album Escapology, the show also provides further evidence of the star's quest to become an all-round entertainer. Between the songs, Williams teases and cajoles the audience with his usual patter of innuendo and self-parody. He also candidly discusses the multi-million pound record deal, his separation from long-time songwriting collaborator Guy Chambers, and his 12-month break from performing live. The show is faultless, and achieves its primary objective of showcasing the new album through a sensible mix of familiar favourites and fresh material. The dancers, musicians and stage set are also excellent, and provide further evidence of how Robbie Williams Inc. has become a mammoth enterprise with the fortunes of many riding on his success. However, his continued on and off-stage lampooning of his fame and fortune becomes immensely irritating after a while: change this record Robbie, before it wears you and your fans out. 1 Surround) provides added panache to this light-entertainment spectacular. As well as the 23-minute backstage footage, comprising the standard Robbie-walking-around-with-no-shirt-on material, other extras include Hamish Brown's photos of the show, alternative versions of three of the songs, and footage rescued from the cutting-room floor of Robbie performing "Revolution". Fans of Latino gusset-dampener Ricky Martin will need no encouragement to buy One Night Only other than knowing it exists, so it's commendable to see that what they will get is a pretty good package after all. On the down side, without the kind of slick studio production accorded to his albums it's clear that Martin's voice is, well, rather ordinary. But on the up side, he's beautiful, he's great fun, he's not short on stage presence and his enthusiasm for the Latin music of his native Puerto Rico is entirely genuine (one of the brief reportage snippets scattered throughout this release shows him playing with a samba band-and getting it right, too). There's a spooky moment in the opening number of this huge gig (which took place in Liberty State Park in New York) as the backdrop artfully falls to reveal the twin towers of the World Trade Center framing Martin like Samson's pillars. Once this frisson passes it's good times all the way, with the inevitable "Vida Loca" and "La Copa De La Vida" as highlights. There are guest spots from Carlos Santana and Jose Feliciano. On the DVD: One Night Only comes with a 4:3 ratio picture and includes an excellent video of the already excellent "Shake Your Bon-Bon", plus a gallery of still photos. -Roger Thomas.

Diehard supporters of everyone's favourite anti-Pope will want Demistifying the Devil, if only because Marilyn Manson is all things to all of them-cutting-edge nu-nasty rock theatre act or slacker anti-hero-you take your choice. However, this very unauthorised biography (there's no footage of young Brian himself or his immediate musical circle other than a few seconds of blurry concert material) is also informative viewing for the merely curious. Mostly consisting of anecdotes from people who were either associated with him before he became famous or who were ejected from his entourage, it soon becomes clear that MM was and remains a genuinely talented visionary. It also becomes clear that the best thing he ever did to further his career was to abandon the huddle of derivative no-marks who constituted the "scene" in his home town of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and whose parochial ramblings dominate this unintentionally hilarious documentary. If you're a fan, you'll have your faith confirmed. If you're not, you'll still end up feeling strangely pleased that both Manson and those he left behind are getting the respective levels of attention they deserve. -Roger Thomas.
