Review Red Dwarf - Complete Series 1-3 [Remastered] [1988] / 2 Entertain Video:The slipcase enclosing this box set of the first three Red Dwarf series proclaims: "New model sequences, new footage, new effects. Digitally remastered sound, digitally enhanced pictures and brand new wooshy [sic] noises!!". It's all a far cry from when the Beeb simply re-used their old Doctor Who tapes, to the fans' subsequent consternation. As it happens, the tarting-up of these earliest episodes from the only successful sci-fi comedy show ever is seamlessly unobtrusive. The premise of the show-a vast spaceship blundering through the cosmos, inhabited by the last human being in the universe, a hologram of his dead bunkmate and a Little Richard lookalike evolved from a cat-was, from the earliest stages, redeemed by its detailed and careful deployment of classic sci-fi plot devices-time travel, virtual worlds, genetic engineering, you name it-with all the care and attention of "serious" sci-fi. However, in Red Dwarf, these concepts are shot through with obfuscation, trivia and the unerring sense that everything is about to go terribly, terribly wrong. So it is, then, that in a parallel universe the crew have feminine counterparts, a new form of spaceship drive looks suspiciously like a large box with stop and start buttons and jigsaws are completed by mysterious forces, to cite but three of the endless highlights contained herein. -Roger Thomas.

Review Red Dwarf - Series 7 - Byte 3 [1988] / 2 Entertain Video:What if you could communicate with a virus that was infecting you, and argue the ethics of killing a living being to sustain one's own existence? If you were Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise, you'd probably reach an understanding that led to widespread vegetarianism and the elimination of disease. But if you're Dave Lister, you lose the argument, then have to lie there and listen to the smarty-pants virus mocking you. But you don't give up, because your gallant shipmates are sure to have another trick up their sleeves. This tape contains the final two episodes of Red Dwarf Series VII, plus short interviews with the show's cast, creators and fans (including scientist Stephen Hawking and actor Patrick Stewart, who played Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation) and a collection of "smeg-ups", or outtakes, from Series VII. The episodes feature at least two of the finest sight gags in the entire Red Dwarf canon, both quite nasty and thoroughly hilarious at the same time. The smeg-ups are worth watching just for the snippets of Danny John-Jules' true accent, a far cry from the Cat's James Brown-inspired speech. -Anna Peekstok.

Review Red Dwarf - Series 2 - Episodes 1-3 [Remastered] [1988] / 2 Entertain Video:With its scenario established, but refusing to ever accord to genre or TV formatting, the second series of Red Dwarf went right ahead and broke as many rules of taste and convention it could get away with! We're introduced to "Kryten" (although not Robert Llewelyn who was to take over the part late) as the gone-peculiar servant droid attending the literal skeleton crew of a crashed ship. When the lads expect to meet three attractive female officers, watch for the hilarious scene following the line: "We're not on the pull". Then in the game Better Than Life we learn all manner of awful historical Rimmer stories as his skewered psyche spoils an opportunity for everyone's dreams to come true. Last on the tape is an excellent piece of science fiction (oddly enough!) that has everyone trying to solve the mystery of four days missing in their memory. "Thanks For The Memory" is always to be remembered for its masterful recipe for a fried egg chilli chutney sandwich too! -Paul Tonks.

Review Red Dwarf - Series 7 - Byte 1 [1988] / 2 Entertain Video:The last man in the universe and his three pals (a servile robot, a humanoid descended from a cat and a pompous hologram) continue their adventures in deep space, skating along the razor edge between high concepts and humour that's lower than a space weevil's belly after it munches its way through a 10-year supply of chicken vindaloo. The first three episodes of Red Dwarf Series VII explore time paradoxes, parallel universes and the meaning of good and evil, between bouts of outrageous physical comedy involving Lee Harvey Oswald, the knights of Camelot and dental floss. Kryten the robot loses his inhibitions, Dave Lister takes his love of virtual-reality gaming way too far, and just when you start to think that all possible jokes involving four guys trapped on a space ship and getting on each other's nerves have been exhausted, one character leaves and a new one joins the crew. These changes may distress some fans, until they recall that the greatest charm of this unique sci-fi comedy has always been its refusal to take anything seriously-including itself. -Anna Peekstok.

Review Red Dwarf - Series 7 - Byte 2 [1988] / 2 Entertain Video:Dave Lister's prayers have been answered. The ultra-annoying hologram, Rimmer, has left to become a universe-hopping hero, and a rift in space-time has brought his ex-girlfriend, Kristine Kochanski, back to life. But there's trouble in paradise as Kryten the mechanoid freaks out at the prospect of losing Lister's affections to a woman, Kochanski freaks out about being trapped in space with three losers who have the collective social IQ of celery, and Lister is shocked to find himself actually missing Rimmer. Anyone who shares this last sentiment will get a fix in episode 5, "Blue", which features a carnival ride through a virtual-reality version of Rimmer's perversely skewed diary. But the real treat of this collection is in episode 6, "Beyond a Joke", when the berserk Kryten rampages through "Pride and Prejudice land", foiling Kochanski's efforts to inject some culture into life aboard ship. Chloë Annett does a commendable job of fitting Kochanski in among the misfits of Red Dwarf, and shoulders the job of straight man with admirable aplomb. -Anna Peekstok.
