Review State Of The Planet [2000] / 2 Entertain Video:State of the Planet is long overdue. The BBC's Natural History Unit has finally delivered a hard-hitting documentary series on the extinction crisis many scientists believe is beginning to threaten the integrity of the entire biosphere. The combination of stunning camerawork, glossy production, David Attenborough's inspirational whispering narration and subject matter of the greatest and most urgent import makes State of the Planet riveting and required viewing. The three programmes cover the scientific understanding of the crisis, the extent to which humans are implicated in the wave of extinctions currently sweeping across our planet, and the ways in which we might slow or halt the current precipitous decline in Earth's biodiversity. In brief, the conclusions are that we know astonishingly little about the diversity of life on Earth, that our species is implicated at every level in precipitating this, the "sixth great mass extinction", and that we are only just beginning to see possible ways out of the environmental mess that we have created. Viewing the second programme (our malfeasance) directly before the third (our attempts at remediation) makes it abundantly clear that we have a very long way to go. The participation in the series of some of the world's leading authorities on biodiversity and extinction-Ed Wilson, Terry Erwin, Sylvia Earle, Sir Robert May-adds considerable gravity to Attenborough's already weighty presentation. However, the programmes would have been much improved had the experts been allotted more than the odd sound-bite. And why only three programmes on such an important and urgent issue? Review The Trials Of Life - A Natural History Of Behaviour [1990] / 2 Entertain Video:It started as David Attenborough's most ambitious wildlife project, and ended as something really big. First came Life on Earth (1978), then The Living Planet (1984), but when The Trials of Life (1990) arrived the already epic individual series became "The Life Trilogy", collectively the most impressive documentary achievement in the history of television. The intervening years had seen rapid developments in wildlife film-making, including smaller cameras and faster film. The result is that the images often surpass those from previous programmes - just one highlight being the unforgettable scene of a whale pursuing its prey right onto the beach. Rather than focus on evolution or geography, the emphasis is on animal behaviour, from courting and mating, to giving birth and raising the young, hunting, flight and fighting, finding shelter, and migration. This immediacy makes The Trials of Life the most accessible of "The Life Trilogy" for younger children, and with Attenborough's enthusiastic commitment to natural history, every type of creature, from ants and giraffes to hamsters, moose and peacocks, are informatively and entertainingly presented. Nothing less than a television masterpiece, David Attenborough would go on to make The Private Life of Plants and The Life of Birds. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Land of the Tiger [1985] / Carlton Visual Entertainment Ltd:Not just tigers, but a wide range of indigenous creatures are the subjects of Land of the Tigers, a two-tape set. In a fascinating contrast with the curatorial reverence with which most narrators of wildlife programmes treat their subjects, the hyperanimated Valmik Thapar not only presents some superb footage of the wildlife of the Indian sub-continent but describes how these animals are regarded within Indian culture-sometimes deified and revered, or the subject of dance or art or part of daily life. Of course, one disadvantage of transferring nearly five hours of factual TV programming to video is that the continuity and the revisiting of key ideas and impressions can become grindingly monotonous if, as here, no attempt is made to edit the material into a single-package format. However, treat it exactly as it was first broadcast, by rationing yourself to one programme-sized chunk at a time and letting Thapar's recapitulations and lingering, revelatory moments happen as they were originally intended and, if you've any interest at all in the wild life and cultural heritage of the region, you won't be disappointed. -Roger Thomas.
