Review Marked For Death [1991] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:The glowering brutality that is aikido head-banger Steven Seagal's substitute for a star persona at least gives us a rancid taste of authenticity in Marked for Death, a cookie-cutter action picture. This glum lug seems really to enjoy hurting people; he snaps limbs and shatters noses with visible relish. Pitted against a gang of Jamaican gangsters who invade his (white ethnic) Chicago neighbourhood and threaten his family, retired DEA agent John Hatcher sets out to solve the case with robotic efficiency, kicking butt in just about every scene. Not quite as pudgy in this 1990 outing as he became a few films later, Seagal looks like the genuine, lethal article in the fight sequences but like a hopeless amateur when he tries to act his way out of the waterlogged-paper-bag of a script. So what else is new? The one bright spot here is Basil Wallace, a mostly unsung actor who throws himself into the showy role of the Rasta gang-boss Screwface, a garishly scarred psycho with piercing ice-blue eyes. -David Chute, Amazon. com.

Review Iceman Cometh / Made in Hong Kong:A French movie magazine described this 1989 action fantasy as "Un remake idiot de 'Highlander. '" If only. It's actually one of those rock-bottom Hong Kong films in which the only good sequences are the fights-so good, in fact, that they betray the contribution of a ghost director, most likely Sammo Hung. This surmise is supported by the fact that Yuen Biao and his giggling nemesis from Hung's Eastern Condors, Yuen Hwa, get to restage their final-reel showdown from that film, which is duplicated right down to the camera angles. The two Yuens play antagonists in Ming Dynasty China who are accidentally frozen in a glacier and get thawed out to continue their conflict in modern Kowloon. There are a couple of clever bits, like an interlude in which the bad guy zones out over a Walkman and a bank of TVs showing American programmes. But way too much of the action is frantic lame comedy, as Yuen is taken in hand by hooker Emily Chu and still has a tough time making the adjustment to urban life. At one point he happily slurps up a drink of water from a handy toilet bowl-an emblematic image. -David Chute.

Review Enter The Dragon [1973] / Warner Home Video:One of the most successful martial arts movies of all time, if not the best, Enter the Dragon (filmed in 1973) was Bruce Lee's last completed film and the first significant meeting of Hollywood and Hong Kong cinema. But it wasn't an entirely harmonious marriage, with on-set communication breakdowns and rows resulting in some poor scripting, editing and overdubbing. Lee plays a Shaolin fighter recruited by British intelligence to spy on renegade Shaolin master and crime overlord Han (Shih Kien) by entering the martial arts tournament held on Han's fortress island. If the plot sounds a touch contrived, it is. Han's fluffy white cat, clawed hand and ruthless megalomania suggest nothing so much as a classic Bond villain, and the plot has holes you could pilot a large Junk through (Lee's discovery that his sister committed suicide rather than submit herself to Han's men is particularly weak). Nonetheless, Lee is utterly compelling. At the height of his skills, he choreographed, directed and performed fight scenes which are among the most gripping ever filmed, including the classic underground scene which, in this uncut version, contains Lee's incredible (and previously deleted) nun-chuck display. John Saxon and karate champion Jim Kelly ably support him as fellow contestants, with the massive Yang Sze playing Bolo, Han's lieutenant. Despite being cheesy and overblown, Enter the Dragon is a highly entertaining and accessible Kung Fu film and a showcase for Bruce Lee's considerable skills. -Duncan Thomson.

Review Final Impact / 20 20 Vision NVT 16896:Nick, former world champion in kick boxing, discovers Danny, who just became light heavy-weight champion of Ohio. Danny is very ambitious to become world champion, so Nick offers to train him. After a tense training they set out to the the kick-boxing world championships in Las Vegas, where Danny will meet the brutal champion Joe, who once dethroned Nick.
