Review Baby Beethoven - Symphony of Fun / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Classical music has been scientifically proven to encourage cognitive development in young children. Baby Beethoven, a 29-minute Baby Einstein production, presents excerpts from five of the composer's most famous symphonies-as well as incidental music-in a child-friendly, sensory-rich format. Familiar Beethoven themes like the "Ode to Joy" from his Ninth Symphony are playfully rendered on electric piano and accompanied by colorful images of toys in action, puppetry, and babies at play. The musical excerpts are relatively short and the imagery is quick-paced and varied enough to grab the limited attention span of viewers age 1 to 36 months. Unlike previous Baby Einstein presentations, each symphonic excerpt (though not the incidental music) is labelled-a feature that encourages further exploration of favorite pieces. Baby Beethoven is an aural and visual feast that promotes creativity, mental awareness and an appreciation for classical music in infants, toddlers, and their parents. -Tami Horiuchi.

Review Baby Einstein - Neighbourhood Animals / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:When Baby Einstein started its "video board books" in 1997, the company was virtually alone in the field of baby development. By its sixth video, the field has become crowded with similar-sounding titles. Now scientists might be able to analyze what a baby will get out of a DVD like Baby Einstein - Neighbourhood Animals compared to Baby Van Gogh, but is it worth getting more baby videos? Absolutely-babies love variety as much as their adult counterparts. On that level, Neighbourhood Animals scores. Using a stimulating mix of brightly colored toys, whimsical puppets (including your host, Pavlov the Dog) and lots of pictures, Neighbourhood Animals takes the viewer on a 30-minute tour of commonly found animals. Help your little pal spot a pig on the farm or a dog in the house. Baby Einstein - Neighbourhood Animals uses animals' sounds, kids' drawings, and photography for each animal in four habitats. The natural settings and original, bright recordings of Beethoven, Rimsky-Korsakov, Vivaldi, and others should make this a favorite every time you want to visit Old MacDonald's Farm. Followed by a companion production, Baby Einstein: World Animals. -Doug Thomas.

Review Baby Shakespeare (Baby Einstein Learning Laboratory) / Walt Disney Home Video:The fourth "video board book" from the Baby Einstein people is their most engaging product yet. Aimed at slightly older audiences (ages 1 to 4), Baby Shakespeare combines poetry with the usual mix of festive classical music, bright objects and happy thoughts designed to stimulate young minds. This video is aimed at exposing little tykes to the language context. Twelve words (grass, tree, etc. ) are explored in pictures and poem form with plenty of playful stops for children singing their ABCs and close-ups of brightly coloured toys in action. We even meet Baby Einstein's first host: a dragon puppet named Bard, who (along with his friends) playfully participates in the action. He deserves a repeat performance. -Doug Thomas.

Review Baby Van Gogh - World of Colours / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Baby Van Gogh is from the award-winning infant-developmental media company Baby Einstein, whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child's curiosity through sight and sound. In the main Theatre section of this disc you'll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Unlike the simpler earlier releases, this is focused on the works of Vincent Van Gogh, who is here represented by a blue sock puppet! To begin with the video seems like something of a nature documentary with flowers in bloom and animals on the move, before we're taken through the colours of the rainbow with sections devoted to the individual colours. For example in Yellow, there are toy chicks, sunflowers, lemons and children playing in yellow paper shavings. All the while, The Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra play us music from Van Gogh's era such as The Blue Danube Waltz, The William Tell Overture, Swan Lake and Flight of the Bumble Bee. This is a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works. On the DVD: Baby Van Gogh is the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show. There's also an Art Exhibit of each of the featured Van Gogh paintings, a Resources section with the aforementioned Video Tutorial and a Toy Chest crediting all the toys used, just in case a certain someone wants one of their own. -Paul Tonks.

Review Baby Einstein - Language Nursery / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Baby Einstein: Language Nursery is from the award-winning infant-developmental media company of the same name, whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child's curiosity through sight and sound. In the main "Theatre" section of this disc you'll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Everything is accompanied by soothing and tinkling nursery-rhyme tunes. Every so often, a narrating female voice will move from English into another language-all of which is designed to expose your child to the wider world of languages. A video tutorial explains things just in case the parent is scratching their head as to what they're meant to do. It really is as simple as plonking junior down for half an hour to be colourfully distracted in a manner designed to educate as well as entertain. This is the simplest of the company's releases, making for an ideal introduction to what they're about. Others in the series focus on musical or artistic themes to expand upon all the ideas contained here. -Paul Tonks.

This release was named Video of the Year by Child and Parent magazine and is a wonderful expansion of the company's original ideas. It's a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works. On the DVD: Baby Mozart is the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show.
