Review Lawnmower Man [1992] / First Independent Video:

In 1992, The Lawnmower Man was hailed as a CGI (Computer Generated Image) breakthrough. It's fascinating to consider the effects in a historical context, knowing it came just a year after T2: Judgment Day and was followed by Jurassic Park a year later. Written and directed by Bill Leonard, this was intended to showcase how realistic digital likenesses and landscapes had become. Little did they know that Toy Story was already in pre-production! The story hangs on the concept that a scientist gain (Pierce Brosnan) is drafted in to utilise the technology for governmental. As with all top-secret government projects in the movies, it all goes horribly wrong. Forced to progress from a chimp to a human subject, Brosnan secretly recruits local backwards boy and lawnmower pusher Jobe (Jeff Fahey). The increases in intelligence are alarming. He learns Latin in two hours, becomes an object of sexual desire (all it takes is cowboy boots apparently), and then develops telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Some very overt religious analogy is in evidence. Jobe's beatings by a priest give way to an eventual crucifixion on the spinning wheel that allows him to enter Virtual Reality. [+]
Will he be resurrected for a sequel? Such questions were what Stephen King took extreme exception to when his name was placed before the title. A lawsuit took care of that. What the film ought to be remembered and appreciated for though are the visuals, which undoubtedly advanced the arcade and home computer game industry. -Paul Tonks.

Review Death Wish [1974] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

This controversial, 1974 drama exploits urban paranoia and presents vigilantism as cathartic release. But it is also a captivating, Everyman-ish story of a New Yorker who goes through a sea change after crime depletes his family and who runs foul of the law while taking it into his own hands. Charles Bronson stars as the vengeance-seeking urban warrior who goes on a punk-killing spree after his wife and daughter are attacked by intruders. Director Michael Winner (TheWicked Lady) shamelessly builds upon audience identification with Bronson's rage but he also makes an interesting story out of the latter's tug-of-war with disapproving police. It's an unpleasant film all around but not nearly as bad as its horrifying, numerous sequels. Watch for a very young Jeff Goldblum-in this, his second movie-as one of the assailants of Bronson's loved ones. -Tom Keogh.

Review Addams Family Values [1993] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

This slightly more cohesive follow-up to The Addams Family has the same director, Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), but a better story line. Joan Cusack plays a busty gold digger who ingratiates herself into the Addams home and convinces Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) that she wants to marry him. Besides Lloyd, the cast includes Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia, ideal as those Brontëan lovers, Morticia and Gomez. But Christina Ricci again walks away with the best moments as the chilly Wednesday Addams, making life miserable for two camp counsellors (Peter MacNicol and Christine Baranski) who want her to fit in with other kids. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review Transformers - Original Series - Vol. 1 / Maverick Entertainment:

Back in the 1980s, there were few phenomena bigger than the Transformers. A hugely popular toy line, it also spawned a long-running comic book, a hit feature film and successful animated television series. Transformers-Original Series, Volume One collects five episodes of the hit television series: the epic, three-part "The Ultimate Doom", plus two episodes that have never before been available in the UK ("Fire on the Mountain" and "War of the Dinobots"). Epic in scope, the story of the Transformers was a timeless, if unsophisticated, tale of good versus evil: the heroic Autobots battled to prevent the evil Decepticons from realising their goal of universal conquest. The resulting civil war raged for millions of years, draining the energy resources from their home planet Cybertron and leading the two robotic races to earth. Here, they continue their war, using their unique ability to alter their bodies to take on the form of earthly vehicles, weapons and creatures. In the morass of bad 80s' cartoons, the Transformers shone like a beacon on Saturday mornings-excellent animation (for many in the US and UK, it was their first introduction to Japanese manga, albeit basic) and characters with real personalities and depth (for most children of the 80s, Autobot leader Optimus Prime was a very real hero). For the ever-growing legions of Transformers fans out there, as well as any 80s' nostalgia buffs, Transformers-Original Series, Volume One is required viewing. -Robert Burrow.

Review / The Trigger Effect [VHS Video]

Review The Trigger Effect [VHS Video]:

How tenuous is man's hold on civilization when survival becomes an issue? When the lights go out and stay out for several days, suburbanites Matthew and Annie learn the hard way that man is "by nature" a predatory creature. Matthew's long-time friend, Joe, happens by on the second day and a rivalry between the two friends simmers as Annie cares for her sick baby. When rumors of looting spread through the neighborhood, the two men buy a rifle for protection but Annie throws it in the pool. Later, that same night, Joe hears a prowler downstairs and awakens Matthew. They chase the stranger from the house and out into the street where a neighbor shoots him to death. No longer safe in their own home, they decide to drive to Annie's parents some 500 miles away. Before they reach their destination, more trouble comes their way when they stop to siphon gas from an abandoned car and discover the driver in the back seat. Is this what is meant by "man's inhumanity to man?".

Review Crimson Tide [1995] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:

In the typical Don Simpson-Jerry Bruckheimer mould(the partnership yielded Top Gun and Days of Thunder, among many other films), this 1995 drama is a combination of one-dimensional but enjoyable performances, lots of high-tech nonsense taking place onscreen, and mechanistic movie-making at its loudest and most seizure-inducing. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington play nuclear submarine officers squaring off over the former's apparent intention to do some unauthorized damage to an enemy. Tony Scott (Top Gun) directed, bringing his lustre and pop commercial sense to go with all that Simpson-Bruckheimer eye candy. -Tom Keogh.
