Review The Night Of The Hunter [1955] / Warner Home Video:

In the entire history of American movies, The Night of the Hunter stands out as the rarest and most exotic of specimens. It is, to say the least, a masterpiece-and not just because it was the only movie directed by flamboyant actor Charles Laughton or the only produced solo screenplay by the legendary critic James Agee (who also co-wrote The African Queen). The truth is, nobody has ever made anything approaching its phantasmagoric, overheated style in which German expressionism, religious hysteria, fairy-tale fantasy (of the Grimm-est variety), and stalker movie are brought together in a furious boil. Like a nightmarish premonition of stalker movies to come, Night of the Hunter tells the suspenseful tale of a demented preacher (Robert Mitchum, in a performance that prefigures his memorable villain in Cape Fear), who torments a boy and his little sister-even marries their mixed-up mother (Shelley Winters)-because he's certain the kids know where their late bank-robber father hid a stash of stolen money. So dramatic, primal, and unforgettable are its images-the preacher's shadow looming over the children in their bedroom, the magical boat ride down a river whose banks teem with fantastic wildlife, those tattoos of LOVE and HATE on the unholy man's knuckles, the golden locks of a drowned woman waving in the current along with the indigenous plant life in her watery grave-that they're still haunting audiences (and filmmakers) today. -Jim Emerson, Amazon. com.

Review City On Fire [1987] / Made in Hong Kong:

Widely acknowledged as the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, Ringo Lam's terse gangland melodrama City On Fire shows this idiosyncratic action movie director at his darkest. Chow Yun Fat plays Ku, an undercover cop buried so deeply inside the Hong Kong criminal fraternity that he no longer knows which side of the law he's supposed to be on. Infiltrating a dangerous gang of armed jewel thieves, he wins the friendship and respect of Fu, a hard-bitten gunman played with steely reserve by Danny Lee. As Ku is increasingly estranged from the police and as Fu watches his fellow gangsters cracking under the strain of pulling off their biggest heist yet, Lam paints a grim portrait of desperate men losing control of their lives. Chow Yun Fat brings a genuinely rattled quality to his performance as a lone individual living on the last of his nerves, and Lam keeps tight control over the sense of menace as Fu, who casually accepts death as an occupational hazard, warily lets Ku into his life. A mordant sense of loss and disillusionment hangs over both characters, starkly offset by the twinkling Christmas lights festooning the streets in preparation for the holiday season. sets the mood for the film's bitterest moment: a brutal metal-shredding car chase accompanied by a tinny disco version of "Joy to the World". Other highpoints include the taut three-way standoff between a dead-eyed Fu and surviving gang members as they argue at gunpoint over Ku's loyalty, a scene Tarantino later reworked in Reservoir Dogs, and the heavy ballistics of the final shootout as the police surround and close in on the thieves' warehouse hideout. Review The Negotiator [1998] / Warner Home Video:

Although it eventually runs out of smart ideas and resorts to a typically explosive finale, this above-average thriller rises above its formulaic limitations on the strength of powerful performances by Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Both play Chicago police negotiators with hotshot reputations, but when Jackson's character finds himself falsely accused of embezzling funds from a police pension fund, he's so thoroughly framed that he must take extreme measures to prove his innocence. He takes hostages in police headquarters to buy time and plan his strategy, demanding that Spacey be brought in to mediate with him as an army of cops threatens to attack, and a media circus ensues. Both negotiators know how to get into the other man's thoughts, and this intellectual showdown allows both Spacey and Jackson to ignite the screen with a burst of volatile intensity. Director F Gary Gray is disadvantaged by an otherwise predictable screenplay, but he has a knack for building suspense and is generous to a fine supporting cast, including Paul Giamatti as one of Jackson's high-strung hostages, and the late JT Walsh in what would sadly be his final big-screen role. The Negotiator should have trusted its compelling characters a little more, probing their psyches more intensely to give the suspense a deeper dramatic foundation, but it's good enough to give two great actors a chance to strut their stuff. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Evil Dead 2 [1987] / 4 Front Video:

Writer-director Sam Raimi's extremely stylized, blood-soaked follow-up to his creepy Evil Dead isn't really a sequel; rather, it's a remake on a better budget. It also isn't really a horror film (though there are plenty of decapitations, zombies, supernatural demons, and gore) as much as it is a hilarious, sophisticated slapstick send-up of the terror genre. Raimi takes every horror convention that exists and exaggerates it with mind-blowing special effects, crossed with mocking Three Stooges humour. The plot alone is a genre cliché right out of any number of horror films. Several teens (including our hero, Ash, played by Bruce Campbell in a manic tour-de-force of physical comedy) visit a broken-down cottage in the woods-miles from civilization-find a copy of the Book of the Dead, and unleash supernatural powers that gut every character in sight. All, that is, except Ash, who takes this very personally and spends much of the of the film getting his head smashed while battling the unseen forces. Raimi uses this bare-bones story as a stage to showcase dazzling special effects and eye-popping visuals, including some of the most spectacular point-of-view Steadicam work ever (done by Peter Deming). Although it went unnoticed in the cinemas, the film has since become an influential cult-video favourite, paving the way for over-the-top comic gross-out films like Peter Jackson's Dead Alive. -Dave McCoy.
