Review Set It Off / Entertainment in Video:

Even when it misses a dramatic opportunity in favour of generic action, Set It Off benefits from a sharp understanding of its well-drawn central characters. They are a quartet of young African American women in Los Angeles (Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, Kimberly Elise), all struggling against a system that seems designed to prevent them from realising their dreams. The movie establishes their plight with credible attention to emotional detail, making their decision to rob banks believable enough to give the ensuing plot its inevitably tragic momentum. Co-written by the screenwriter of What's Love Got to Do With It?, the film conveys genuine compassion for its characters, and the ensemble cast is uniformly strong-especially Queen Latifah as a brash lesbian whose fate is as certain as her forceful attitude. Set It Off expresses a real sense that these women have been close friends for years, and that gives the film additional impact, even when their transition to crime and violence feels somewhat forced and superficial. A romantic subplot involving Pinkett and a social-climbing banker (Blair Underwood) is too contrived to be convincing, and director F. Gary Gray (Friday) tries too hard to combine hard-hitting action with social relevance (a weakness shared by Gray's following film, The Negotiator). Still, Set It Off effectively avoids passing judgement; its emotional complexity transcends simple notions of right and wrong, injecting vitality-and a kind of renegade integrity-into the traditions of a familiar plot. -Jeff Shannon.

Review The Man With The Golden Gun [1974] / MGM Entertainment:

The British spy with a licence to kill takes on his dark underworld double, a classy assassin who kills with golden bullets at £1 million a hit. Roger Moore, in his second outing as James Bond, meets Christopher Lee's Scaramanga, one of the most magnetic villains in the entire series, in this entertaining but rather wan entry in the 007 sweepstakes. Bond's globetrotting search takes him to Hong Kong, Bangkok, and finally China, where Scaramanga turns his island retreat into a twisted theme park for a deadly game of wits between the gunmen, moderated by Scaramanga's diminutive man Friday Nick Nack (Fantasy Island's Hervé Villechaize). Britt Ekland does her best as an embarrassingly inept Bond girl, a clumsy, dim agent named Mary Goodnight who looks fetching in a bikini, while Maud Adams is Scaramanga's tough but haunted lover and assistant. Clifton James, the redneck sheriff from Live and Let Die, makes an ill-advised appearance as a racist tourist. He briefly teams up with 007 in what is otherwise the film's highlight, a high-energy chase through the crowded streets of Bangkok that climaxes with a breathtaking mid-air corkscrew jump. Bond and company are let down by a lazy script, but Moore balances the overplayed humour with a steely performance and Lee's charm and enthusiasm makes Scaramanga a cool, deadly, and thoroughly enchanting adversary. -Sean Axmaker, Amazon. com.

Review Big Hit [1999] / Cinema Club:

Film fans might someday recognise 1997 and 1998 as the years Hong Kong came to Hollywood. Stars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Chow Yun-Fat, Jet Li and Michelle Yeogh all appeared in major Hollywood projects and directors John Woo, Ronny Yu and Tsui Hark directed Face/Off, Bride of Chucky and Knock Off, respectively. Another entry into this new era of entertainment is The Big Hit, directed by Che-Kirk Wong (who also directed Jackie Chan in Crime Story), executive produced by John Woo, and produced by Wesley Snipes. Mark Wahlberg leads this all-American cast in a played-for-laughs macho blowout. Rounding out the testosterone brigade are Lou Diamond Phillips (sprouting a gold-capped tooth and a dirty mouth), Bokeem Woodbine (who, according to this DVD's director audio track, wore extra socks where it counts), Antonio Sabàto Jr. and Avery Brooks. Wahlberg plays Melvin Smiley, a nice-guy hit man with an ulcer and a severe insecurity problem. He's short on cash due to the spending habits of his unsuspecting fiancée Pam (Christina Applegate) and his girlfriend-on-the-sly Chantel (Lela Rochon). He and his crew decide to do a little freelancing and cook up their own heist to make a little mo' money-specifically by kidnapping Keiko (China Chow), the daughter of a Japanese businessman whom they target for ransom. Little do they know her dad is broke and she's the goddaughter of their boss. [+]
The Big Hit has action scenes aplenty (one of the stunt co-ordinators worked on Woo's The Killer and Bullet in the Head) and the same cornball sense of humour as other films in the Hong Kong action genre. Slick pacing and over-the-top humour made this movie a miss with the critics but a fun ride for fans of Hong Kong-styled action. -Shannon Gee.

Review 28 Days Later ... [2002] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

Anti-vivisection activists make a very bad judgment call and release an experimental monkey infected with "rage". 28 Days Later. , as the title has it, bicycle messenger Cillian Murphy wakes up from a post-traffic accident coma in a deserted London hospital, ventures out to find the city depopulated and the few remaining normal people doing everything to avoid the jittery, savage, zombie-like "infecteds" who attack on sight. Our bewildered hero has to adjust to the loss of his family and the entire world, but hooks up with several others-including a tough black woman (Naomie Harris) and a likable London cabbie (Brendan Gleeson)-on a perilous trip northwards, to seek refuge at army officer Christopher Eccleston's fortified retreat. However, even if they survive the plague, the future of humanity is still in doubt. Directed by Danny Boyle and scripted by novelist Alex Garland, this is a terrific SF/horror hybrid, evoking American and Italian zombie movies but also the very British end-of-the-world tradition of John Wyndham (Day of the Triffids) and Survivors. Shot on digital video, which gives the devastated cityscapes a closed-circuit-camera realism, this grips from the first, with its understandably extreme performances, its terrifyingly swift monster attacks and its underlying melancholy. Deliberately crude, 28 Days Later is also sometimes exceptionally subtle. [+]

Review Satanic Rites Of Dracula [1974] / Warner Home Video:

The Satanic Rites of Dracula-the final film in which Christopher Lee played Dracula-is a bleak, even poignant affair. The vampire and his adversary Lorimer Van Helsing reach the end of the line amidst the desolate, rain-streaked concrete city scapes of the early 1970s. Dracula has, it seems, allowed his contempt for humanity to reach its logical conclusion: no longer content with drinking blood, he has gathered together a group of scientists and created a plague which will eradicate all life on earth. This quasi-medical plot admits a certain element of Avengers-style techno-kitsch-all the more uncanny, then, that Joanna Lumley here takes over Stephanie Beacham's role as Van Helsing's grand-daughter Jessica-yet it's all off-white enamel and Formica rather than lights and dials. There is an extraordinary scene in which Dracula, masquerading as a property tycoon, is confronted by Van Helsing in his office. He is no longer the brooding, elemental figure of yore, but instead lurks in the shadows behind his desk, having become little more than a shifty businessman, while Van Helsing seems to realise that the two of them are nothing more than tired old men fighting a battle which has become meaningless. Fascinatingly odd. The video comes with some nice behind-the-scenes fact cards. -Roger Thomas.

Review Star Trek: Enterprise, Vol. 1.10 / Paramount Home Entertainment:

Star Trek: Enterprise-Vol. 1. 10 , the fifth live-action series to hail from the Star Trek universe, is without doubt the bravest concept since The Next Generation. Here we boldly go back to the future, 100 years before Captain Kirk, to the very first voyage of a starship called Enterprise. In fact, the concept-once announced at long last-caused an enormous furore among fans and critics. Would the costumes and sets be primary coloured like the 1960s original? Would the ship look like something made on Blue Peter? Would the Klingons look like Fu Manchu in boot polish? No, no and no came the official word at the same time as announcing that Scott (Quantum Leap) Bakula would be sitting in Captain Archer's squeaky new chair. He's accompanied on the new/old ship by his cute dog Porthos, antagonistic Vulcan T'Pol (Jolene Blalock filling the obligatory pin-up babe role) and an alien Doctor with indeterminate head make-up and mysterious origins. It took some time for the show to lift off. An over-familiar format (too much like Voyager) and too much involvement from previous cast and crewmembers were sources of dissatisfaction. But lurking behind the adventures was an insidiously intriguing subplot. [+]
Why are the Vulcans so darned manipulative? Who are the shadowy time-travelling baddies? How will matters build toward the Romulan War? The show also attracted guest B-star power from the likes of Dean Stockwell, Clancy Brown and Clint Howard (Blalock in the classic original series episode "The Corbomite Manoeuvre". It boasts consistently cutting-edge CGI effects and survived the marketing-driven placement of a dull MOR pop song over the opening credits. Either despite or because of these warped factors, Enterprise has been a literal flagship for the franchise in a period when many thought Trek's star was dwindling. -Paul Tonks.
