Review The Manchurian Candidate [VHS] [1962] / MGM Entertainment:You will never find a more chillingly suspenseful, perversely funny, or viciously satirical political thriller than The Manchurian Candidate, based on the novel by Richard Condon (author of Winter Kills). The film, withheld from distribution by star Frank Sinatra for almost a quarter-century after President Kennedy's assassination, has lost none of its potency over time. Former infantryman Bennet Marco (Sinatra) is haunted by nightmares about his platoon having been captured and brainwashed in Korea. The indecipherable dreams seem to centre on Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey), a decorated war hero but a cold fish of a man whose own mother (Angela Lansbury, in one of the all-time great dragon-lady roles) describes him as looking like his head is "always about to come to a point". Mrs Bates has nothing on Lansbury's character, the manipulative queen behind her second husband, Senator John Iselin (James Gregory), a notoriously McCarthyesque demagogue. -Jim Emerson.

Review Miami Vice - Vol. 2 - Give A Little Take A little / No Exit [VHS] [1985] / Playback:In the 1980s, in those heady days before the '87 stock-market crash brought the whole thing down, the television series Miami Vice was a symbol of the times. The brainchild of former Starsky and Hutch scriptwriter-turned-director Michael Mann, riding high on the back of the critical success of Manhunter, his adaptation of the first Hannibal Lecter novel Red Dragon, Miami Vice provided smart, slick and stylish (many would say too stylish) entertainment as it followed the career of two cops against an opulent Miami, Florida backdrop. Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) was the local cop-on-the-edge. Tough, honourable, charming and cool (he did, after all, live on boat with a pet alligator named Elvis), he became one of the 80s ultimate style icons. After only a few episodes of the series, men all over the world began to sport white suits (with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows), pastel shirts, 5 o'clock shadows and deck shoes sans socks. Crockett's less charismatic partner Ricardo Tubbs (sorry, Philip Michael Thomas, but it's true) was a transplanted New York beat cop who came to Miami with a score to settle, but ended up staying, charmed by the city's glitz and glamour (the show's general attitude was "Hey, wouldn't you?"). Although the Miami Vice pilot episode remains an essential 80s archive piece (one suspects it had a much bigger budget), the two episodes that make up Volume Two offer little to anyone other than die-hard fans. Even the addition of the always interesting Edward James Olmos as the police captain and Michael Madsen guest-star turn as a criminal gunning for one of Crockett's informants can do little to salvage the clumsy direction and cringeworthy acting of the first episode, "Give A Little, Take A Little". The terrible subplot involving a prostitution bust going wrong is especially embarrassing. The second episode, "No Exit", is exponentially better. [+]
Directed by David Soul, the blond half of Starsky & Hutch-and, therefore, a man who knows a thing or two about cop shows-"No Exit" features a much hairier Bruce Willis as an international arms dealer who's brought down with the help of his abused wife. -Robert Burrow.

Review Miami Vice - Vol. 1 - The Original Pilot - [VHS] [1985] / Playback:In the 1980s, in those heady days before the '87 stock market crash brought the whole thing down, the television series Miami Vice was a symbol of the times. Crockett's less charismatic partner Ricardo Tubbs (sorry, Philip Michael Thomas, but it's true) was a transplanted New York beat cop who came to Miami with a score to settle, but ended up staying, charmed by the city's glitz and glamour. What's most impressive about Miami Vice's feature-length pilot episode is how well it still holds up today. Sure, the script is full of clichés (the opening credits have barely ended before Crockett is getting chewed out by his captain), but the show looks impressively glossy and well produced. It's so well put together, in fact, that even the Phil-Collins-packed soundtrack blends seamlessly into the whole package. Well directed and well acted (especially by Don Johnson, who was born to the part of raffish rogue), it's only let down by the weakness of a storyline designed primarily to introduce us to the characters. Nonetheless, the Miami Vice pilot remains an essential 80s archive piece, demonstrating the triumph of style over substance. -Robert Burrow.

Review Urban Gothic - Vol. 1 [VHS] / Ilc Prime:Urban Gothic is an interesting original horror short story anthology format, uniting standard horror material with contemporary urban London settings. Tom De Ville has a good ear for streetwise chatter, and a reasonably acute sense of class and ethnic difference-those of his pieces which are essentially character-driven tend to be more successful than those which depend rather more on sensation and plot device. The London locations and young cast combine to make something surprisingly creepy. There are thee episodes on this first volume. In "Deadmeat" a group of sensation-seeking young people, on the run from drug dealers and sexually rapacious employers, find a corpse with a look of horror on its face and decide to experiment with necromancy. Then they discover that there are some people you just don't want back from the dead. "Vampirology" is a tour de force parody of fly-on-the wall documentaries, as a film crew follows a vampire on his nightly round of drinks with yuppie friends and the devouring of a lost tourist. Keith-Lee Castle's portrait of a lost soul is remarkable, and the guest appearance of Ingrid Pitt, every vampire's favourite starlet, is hilarious. Finally in "Old Nick" small children in a block of flats made sinister by bad thoughts and bad dreams know, just know, that the Devil himself lives three floors up. -Roz Kaveney.

Review Cliffhanger [VHS] [1993]:Cliffhanger was a 1994 comeback of sorts for action hero Sylvester Stallone, this time thanks to director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) and some spectacularly rugged and vertigo-inducing, high-mountain terrain. The opening sequence alone delivers what the title promises, and there's an extraordinary airplane stunt that was later reprised, with modifications, in Air Force One. Stallone, looking as tough and craggy as the mountains themselves, is a rescue climber who finds himself going after a gang of crooks (headed by John Lithgow in his bad-guy mode) who've hijacked a US Treasury plane and crash landed in the Rockies with millions of bucks. Outrageous action-packed, snow-packed and scenery-packed chase sequences (featuring whirring helicopters, whooshing skis, popping gunfire and clanging pitons that earned the movie Oscar nominations for sound and sound editing) abound. -Jim Emerson, Amazon. com.
