Review Pilates Weekly Workout With Lynne Robinson [1998] / Pilates:"Pilates tackles the deep structural foundations of the body", explains instructor Lynne Robinson. "Every movement is performed slowly and with control, which means you can't cheat, and the end result is a body which is long and lean, supple and strong. " This workout presents three 25-minute Pilates-based exercise sessions that aim to change the way you use your muscles. You can choose one to do each day, or put them together when you have the time and inclination for a long workout. Each movement emphasises the core muscles of the abdomen and back. You don't need any previous experience because the introduction shows you how to use these muscles through alignment, stabilising and breathing, and Robinson carefully instructs the nuances of every movement. The mood is quiet and controlled, similar to the concentration of yoga. Workout 1 emphasises creating a "girdle of strength", spinal flexibility, and arm and shoulder toning. Workout 2 keeps working on the stabilisation muscles, and adds buttocks, legs and feet. Workout 3 combines exercises and adds complexity for co-ordination, balance and sensory awareness. [+]
At the end is a relaxation sequence. Robinson is an excellent instructor: knowledgeable, mature, patient and clear. You will need a mat, ankle weights, light dumbbells, pole, towel, tennis ball and cushion. -Joan Price.

Review Carol Vorderman's 28 Day Detox Diet / Universal Pictures UK:TV presenter Carol Vorderman looks great for any age, never mind a fortysomething with two youngsters. Vorderman attributes her new slim shape and bundles of new-found energy to a detox diet. Her 28 Day Detox Diet is not a diet video as such. It is a 28-day plan to revamp the way you eat, plan and think about food. Assisted by "detox guru" Ko Chohan (who created the plan), Carol explains her own trials with diets that didn't work, illustrated by "before" photos from when she was two stone heavier and the "after" footage now. Carol makes it sound easy and is a charming host; her own physical beauty is compelling evidence for the plan's success. An illustrated card-the free 28 Day Detox Diet Guide-provides a thumbnail guide to the diet's principles. Basically, to flush out impurities and bloating, it suggests eating lots of fruit, veggies and such. No dairy, any meat- not even fish!-or sugar. No tea or coffee. [+]
Although the video lacks intense or scientific detail, Carol's approach is fresh, easy-to-understand and a joy to watch. Following three very different detox guinea pigs-a single mum, a single career girl and a married woman-via their video diaries, we are shown the real difficulties behind following the detox plan. This is the video for anyone who wants to lose weight and gain more energy, and is willing to make drastic, if eventually delicious and healthy changes to his or her lifestyle for 28 days. -Karen Krizanovich.

Review Geri Yoga [2001] / Cinema Club:Geri Halliwell's transformation from Spice Girl to hip babe owes as much to her taking up yoga-a step she shares with us in Geri Yoga-as it does to revamping her wardrobe. Where Madonna and Sting have led the craze in this field, Geri has decided to show us all the yoga way. The 90-minute Geri Yoga features yoga teacher Katy Appleton presenting two warm up sections, a core Hatha yoga class, relaxation, along with an interview with Geri on yoga as a lifestyle. The entire session appears unscripted, which means it captures the spontaneity of a lesson, yet it's presented in a slick manner from a modern airy studio. A former dancer with the English National Ballet, Katy Appleton's confident poise and ease diffuses Geri the star. Appleton manages to balance her instructions and attention between Tina (the beginner in the sessions) and the advanced Geri, enabling viewers to see how they can progress. Yoga aficionados will be impressed by the precision of Appleton's teaching and horrified by Geri's inane babbling. Unless you're a die-hard Geri fan who can forgive the inappropriate references to calories, you'll be waiting for Appleton to release Yoga without Geri. On the DVD: Geri fans will lap up the extended interview, while non Geri fans will be thankful for the isolated music score. There is also an additional session geared to re-energising and revitalising body and mind. [+]

Review Vanessa - If I Can You Can! [2001] / Universal Pictures UK:If, inside every large woman, there's a thin one longing to get out, TV presenter Vanessa Feltz has proved you can liberate her. Vanessa's workout video starts with a black-and-white retrospective of the fat celebrity we all once knew. In a voiceover, she tells us of the insults she had to endure, such as being called "Mrs Blobby". She was so unfit she couldn't climb stairs and was scared of getting stuck in turnstiles. The video goes colour to reveal the new Vanessa. Her misery ended, she tells us, when her now ex-husband ("ex" is said with relish) issued an ultimatum: "Lose weight, or lose me. " She lost both, and feels all the better for it. She has shrunk from size 24 to size 12. How did Vanessa do it? The answer is Dennis Duhaney, a charming taskmaster with dreadlocks and a London accent. Before launching into Dennis's aerobic exercises, Vanessa explains his eating plan. [+]
Drink lots of water, have five portions of fruit and veg daily, eat little and often, and make your last meal early in the evening. Then, with a warning to anyone with doubts to see their doctor first, the warm-up begins. The exercise routines become progressively harder and faster, moving through Gear One to Gear Four. Essentially, they are variations of marching, boxing and kicking done to the beat of a background soundtrack. Handheld weights come into it towards the end of the video, but Vanessa says tins of baked beans will do just as well. It finishes with a cool down which is vaguely based on yoga. To follow the routines, you'd need plenty of space, and preferably a sprung floor. So, could this video help you lose over four stone in 12 weeks, as Vanessa claims on the video cover? Maybe. But, probably, only if Dennis came with it. -Joan Byrne.

Review The Human Body / 2 Entertain Video:The Human Body documentary is the sort of televisual undertaking that continues to justify the BBC licence fee. Presented by Robert Winston, it takes us on a journey from birth to death using time-lapse photography, computer graphics and various state-of-the-art imaging techniques to explore every aspect, every nook and crevice of the human body in its various stages of growth, maturity and eventual decay. Conception, toddlerhood, the awkward growing pains of adolescence, the incredibly complex workings of the brain (which burns up more energy than any other part of the human body, viewers of daytime TV included, apparently) and finally death are vividly depicted and explained. Winston's lucid, avuncular tones make The Human Body accessible to an intelligent 10-year-old and ages upward, though the more squeamish viewer might baulk at scenes of food being digested, or childbirth in all its inevitable messiness. Statistics abound-the average human will eat for three-and-a-half years during his or her lifetime, eat 160kg of chocolate and spend six months on the toilet. Though heart-warming in that it shows the commonality of human experience, The Human Body is also a potentially depressing reminder of our frail physicality and mortality. However, the most moving programme here features Herbie, a cancer victim who, in agreeing to have his last moments filmed as he lies dying in a hospice, has perhaps achieved a deserved immortality through this programme. On the DVD: The DVD edition includes a 50-minute feature on the making of the series and the background to the special effects used. -David Stubbs.

Review Suzanne Cox - The Fix / Imc Vision:Popularly known as Vogue from Gladiators, Suzanne Cox delivers what she promises: a no excuse workout video. The Fix provides three accessible 20-minute workouts aimed clearly at the busy young woman who needs a fitness fix, but either shies away from the gym or can't get round to going. Cox, who wrote and choreographed the video herself, is approachable and straight to the point. Backed by a team of real women, she presents simple workouts which succeed because there are no attempts to surprise or impress. The Traditional Aerobics session is a reminder of why aerobics became so successful back in the 1980s: it's upbeat and fun. Dance Aerobics combines funky dance moves with aerobics, so you could kid yourself this was a dance lesson. And the Firm-up focuses on toning up abdominals, thighs, bums and arms. Even if you can't pick up the simplest of moves, there is enough repetition to get the hang of something on each viewing, and because Cox keeps you moving constantly you benefit at all times. Do all three sessions if you're feeling virtuous, or pick one of the three depending on your mood and time. -Lorna V.
