Don't be deceived by the subtitle "gentle". Kripalu Yoga might not be the dynamic form of yoga that is currently fashionable, yet it is of equal value to beginners and intermediate students of yoga. Thankfully the makers chose to feature a short film about the Kripalu Centre at the end of the video, by which time it doesn't matter if you get the impression that it's an American cult. This is meditative yoga based on intense stretching, which leaves you with a calm sense of well-being. Teacher Carolyn Lundeen delivers the introduction like a sensible academic lecture. Those unfamiliar with language such as "give yourself permission" might find this verging on American psychobabble. However, once Lundeen begins to teach, this is almost as good as being in a class. With the darkened room, and spotlit students, one is immediately transferred to serene surroundings with no distractions. The two 30-minute sessions can be done separately or together. The energising first session focuses more on floor work, while the second more relaxing session features more standing poses. [+]
Nothing is rushed, no time is wasted with elaborate descriptions, and even the sun salutation (a sequence of postures) appears logical and attainable. This is deal for deep relaxation and systematic stretching of every part of the body. -Lorna V.

Tracy Shaws Salsacise Vhs Looking more like a trendy belly dancer in sequinned bra, shorts, and red trainers, ex-Coronation Street star Tracy Shaw is back with another dose of Salsacise. With choreographer and salsa maestro Michael Betts devising the session, this time the duo focus on hips and thighs. That's not to say there are no Latin moves to take away: both the warm up and salsa split session are great fun. Note these aren't real salsa moves, and you'd look pretty odd doing them in a salsa club, but anywhere else the steps would wow. As the session goes into a hip and thigh-stretching Latin lunge, the dance moves give way to more conventional exercise, with the booty burner (for bums), side slimmer (for waist) and tum tightener (for abs) all being floor-based. The effects are certainly felt on the targeted bits, but avoid any of the floor routines in isolation as without adequately preparing the body, back problems are a risk. With each five to seven-minute routine clearly delineated, by far the biggest temptation is to skip the floor work entirely and stick to the fun bits. Whether this ends up shifting the fat off those hips and thighs is really irrelevant: they'll be moving in a sexy way. Australian Louise Solomon has combined the ancient system of yoga with the modern system Pilates, resulting in her own Yogalates. Her intention is to unite yoga's breathing, its internal workout, and its benefits for stress and anxiety together with the Pilates focus on strengthening deeper muscles. But her promise that this can help you lose weight in 28 days cheapens her premise. The implication that neither system is adequate is also misleading. Nevertheless Yogalates will appeal to older, professional women looking for a toning regime. Solomon is not at ease as a presenter: as a teacher her style features constant talking and instruction, which is good if you want your mind occupied, but stressful if you want to clear your mind and relax. Her strengths lie in encouraging knowledge of the body, notably the spine and the natural curves. Those familiar with yoga will gain most from this, otherwise following it can be confusing. The other key problem is that many of the stretches involve a particular resistance band. You can try and make do with a pair of lycra leggings, but eventually you'll give up. [+]
This looks deceptively easy-it's not. If you can stick it through, the chances are you will tone up in 28 days. But don't expect it to be fun. -Lorna V.
