Review Mind, Body And Spirit - Eating Well For Optimum Health / Body and Spirit Collection Mind:Eating Well for Optimum Health takes the form of a cleverly structured lecture, set in the lush conservatory of the New York Botanical Gardens. Those unfamiliar with lecturer Dr Andrew Weil take note: if there is one expert who makes sense on the subject of health and nutrition it's this jovial American. Fans of the bestselling author, currently clinical professor of internal medicine at the University of Arizona, as well as director of its Program in Integrative Medicine, will lap this up. Weil covers plenty of ground, delivering constant information, yet without ever overloading the viewer. What's most appealing is his emphasis on eating being fun and sociable, as well as being a tool for managing health and disease. Beyond that he explains complicated issues in simple words. Myths regarding fat, confusion surrounding carbohydrates and proteins, how to read labels, supplements, crazy nutritional philosophies to avoid, and how to plan an optimum diet-Weil runs through it all in such a compelling manner that you can watch this over and over. Somehow, every sentence is a gem. Obviously his medical background, the fact that he trains doctors in nutrition and his up-to-date research, contribute to his knowledge and style: even junk-food addicts will warm to him. Here is an expert who wants us to enjoy food. [+]

Review Patsy Palmer - The Club Workout [2000] / Vision Video Ltd.:Patsy Palmer's Club Workout is upbeat, it's got a strong beat, and beats most exercise videos for sheer fun. It's filmed in a nightclub where Patsy and her trainer, Niki Wibrow, strut their stuff on the stage to the sounds of get-up-and-dance chart music. "Remember, do what you can and have a laugh", is Patsy's motto. She explains that gyms and diets are not for her, and that dancing is the only exercise she enjoys, especially after she decided to lose a stone in weight and tone up after the birth of her new baby. Enter Niki Wibrow, a pretty dynamic personal fitness trainer, who combines dance moves with exercise. By following the workout routines, Patsy has shed the excess weight, including two inches off her hips, all without dieting. After the warm-up section, the routines-entitled "Crazy Legs", "Slap Happy" and "Jump 'N' Scream"-grow more lively. The combination of Niki's encouragement to "Come on guys", and the irresistible music propels you along. The routines are fairly easy to follow, and none of the exercises is either impossible or dangerous. Another plus is that the workout transfers well to a small space, so it easily can be done in your bedroom or living room. [+]
Patsy Palmer is not a super fitness freak. She's more like the regular girl next door who might be dancing around her handbag. There's a feel-good factor to the video. You get the impression Patsy's genuinely enjoying it, and really having a good laugh. The last time many of us saw Patsy Palmer on the small screen, she was sobbing in EastEnders. It's nice to see that actually she's one of the world's great gigglers. -Joan Byrne.

Review Cindy Crawford - A New Dimension [1999] / ITV DVD:When model Cindy Crawford wanted to trim down and firm up after the birth of her baby, she chose trainer Kathy Kaehler, who had gotten herself back in shape after gaining 80 pounds with her twins. This programme includes two short, easy workouts and one long one. Workout A (12 minutes) is a light-intensity routine, mostly stretching with some strength moves such as lunges and abdominal curls (nothing strenuous), with bland background music. Workout B (16 minutes) includes cardio moves that are very simple and low-impact, such as knee lifts and marching, no choreography. You can use light hand weights if you want to add intensity, although your shoulders might tire before your large muscles. Workout B also includes strength moves such as squats, lunges (while picking up playing cards for a balance challenge), crunches, and pushups. Workout C is a full-body workout consisting mostly of muscle endurance with some segments of cardio. The cardio is more complex and intense than in Workout B, but not "dancey"-combinations of marches, squats, and kicks, for example, with or without hand weights. The production is full of visual stimulation: constantly changing views-colour or black-and-white, clear or grainy, insets, beach scene or workout room-and changing camera angles. The workout doesn't stand out as exciting, but it is solid, and if you saw Crawford's awful first workout video many years ago, you'll be thankful that she traded in Radu's unsafe, poorly designed routine for Kathy Kaehler's safe and sane one. Review Rosemary Conley's Ultimate Whole Body Workout / Cinema Club:When dieting guru Rosemary Conley declares that the Ultimate Whole Body Workout is her last fitness video, cynics might either be relieved that the population is finally to be spared her evangelical diet-speak, or conclude that she's "past it". However, this programme is not so easily dismissed. There might be nothing new here, but there is no doubt that a great deal of Conley's success comes from her ability to motivate. Conley first runs through the key moves featured in the work-outs, cleverly eliminating the problem of figuring it out during the sessions-and the risk of giving up. The 35-minute aerobic workout and the 20-minute body conditioning session are designed to be done on alternative days, while the final chair programme is for those with limited mobility (including pregnant women) who still want to burn calories. With no expense spared on the original soundtrack, a series of pop hits make this all the more easy to go along with. Conley punctuates her instruction with references to members of her backing team and their weight-loss successes. This is a work-out for the woman committed to being slim against all odds, and for whom dieting is likely to be a lifestyle. -Lorna V.

Review Mind, Body And Spirit - Kripalu Yoga - Gentle / Body & Spirit Collection Mind:Don't be deceived by the subtitle "gentle". Kripalu Yoga might not be the dynamic form of yoga that is currently fashionable, yet it is of equal value to beginners and intermediate students of yoga. Thankfully the makers chose to feature a short film about the Kripalu Centre at the end of the video, by which time it doesn't matter if you get the impression that it's an American cult. This is meditative yoga based on intense stretching, which leaves you with a calm sense of well-being. Teacher Carolyn Lundeen delivers the introduction like a sensible academic lecture. Those unfamiliar with language such as "give yourself permission" might find this verging on American psychobabble. However, once Lundeen begins to teach, this is almost as good as being in a class. With the darkened room, and spotlit students, one is immediately transferred to serene surroundings with no distractions. The two 30-minute sessions can be done separately or together. The energising first session focuses more on floor work, while the second more relaxing session features more standing poses. [+]
Nothing is rushed, no time is wasted with elaborate descriptions, and even the sun salutation (a sequence of postures) appears logical and attainable. This is deal for deep relaxation and systematic stretching of every part of the body. -Lorna V.

Review Barbara Currie's Power of Yoga / 2 Entertain Video:Barbara Currie's Power of Yoga makes some powerful claims. Promising you "the best body shape ever" Barbara assures the viewer the video will teach you how to "re-charge and re-energise your entire body in just 10 easy minutes a day". The video itself consists of four self-contained sections based on Hatha yoga techniques that can be done individually if you're short on time or all at once for a longer workout. First up is the 10-minute "tone-up" which you should aim to do daily. Once you get used to this try and do the second 10-minute "power workout" for a more advanced stretch. Section 3 is "power toning" which places particular emphasis on arms, bums, tums and thighs. And finally, section 4 brings you "power stretching" aimed at relieving tension. At the start of each exercise Barbara outlines the muscles that each exercise is working and the benefits you will receive-and her glowing good health should be evidence enough for even the most sceptical viewer. All four sections show versions of each exercise for both the beginner and those with previous experience. But although aimed at all levels, Power of Yoga will be of particular interest to beginners. [+]
No previous knowledge is assumed and with the easy-to-follow sequences and strong emphasis on working at your own pace, Barbara's soothing voice will encourage even the most hesitant beginner. -Anna Freeman.

Review Callanetics - AM/PM [1981] / Universal Pictures UK:Callan Pinckney's Callanetics-a programme of non-impact, deep-muscle exercises-has been popular for decades. In this workout, Callanetics AM/PM, Pinckney presents two 20-minute workouts designed for busy people: an AM Class and a PM Class. "You'll get energised in the morning, completely relaxed in the evening, and of course a great body 24 hours a day," Pinckney promises. She is assisted by a small group of people of varying ages and flexibility levels. The AM Class presents some fairly traditional stretches and other exercises that use a ballet bar (you may substitute a piece of furniture). Some of these are very difficult toning exercises because they work the small muscles (of the hip and outer thigh, for example), and most of the movements are either isometric or little pulses. Most exercise professionals would say that working large muscles through a fuller range of motion is a better use of your time, but Callanetics has always had its followers who claim dramatic results. The PM Class, which she calls "meditation in motion", is quite similar to the morning workout, with more emphasis on stretching. If you're a Callanetics fan, here's a way to divide your workout into two short, manageable parts. -Joan Price, Amazon. [+]
