Review My Best Friend Is A Vampire [1988] / Kings Road Entertainment:

Let's face it - to many people, vampirism isn't all the horror it's made out to be, it's just an alternative lifestyle! You drink a bit of blood and get to live ten times longer than anyone else. Nothing to it. At least that's what Jeremy Capello thinks when he gets a little deeper than the average love-bite from a hot date. Before he knows it, his reflection in the bathroom mirror has vanished; he can't stand the smell of garlic; and he's developed an overwhelming passion for raw steak. Things don't seem to bad until a crazed vampire-hunter stars chasing him.

Review The Shining [1980] / Warner Home Video:

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is less an adaptation of Stephen King's best-selling horror novel than a complete re-imagining of it from the inside out. In King's book, the Overlook Hotel is a haunted place that takes possession of its off-season caretaker and provokes him to murderous rage against his wife and young son. Kubrick's film is an existential Road Runner cartoon (his steadicam scurrying through the hotel's labyrinthine hallways), in which the cavernously empty spaces inside the Overlook Hotel mirror the emptiness in the soul of the blocked writer settled in for a long winter's hibernation. As many have pointed out, King's protagonist goes mad, but Kubrick's Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is Looney Tunes from the moment we meet him-all arching eyebrows and mischievous grin. (Both Nicholson and Shelley Duvall reach new levels of hysteria in their performances, driven to extremes by the director's fanatical demand s for take after take after take. ) The Shining is terrifying-but not in the way fans of the novel might expect. When it was redone as a TV mini-series (reportedly because of King's dissatisfaction with the Kubrick film), the famous topiary-animal attack (which was deemed impossible to film in 1980) was there-but the deeper horror was lost. Kubrick's The Shining gets under your skin and chills your bones; it stays with you, inhabits you, haunts you. And there's no place to hide. [+]

Review Close Encounters Of The Third Kind [1978] / Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:

Released in 1977, Close Encounters of the Third Kind was that year's cerebral alternative to Star Wars. It's arguably the archetypal Spielberg film, featuring a fantasy-meets-reality storyline (to be developed further in E. T. ), a misunderstood Everyman character (Richard Dreyfuss), apparently hostile government agents (long before The X-Files), a sense of childlike awe in the face of the otherworldly, and a sweeping feel for epic film-making learned from the classic school of David Lean. Contributing to the film's overall success are the Oscar-winning cinematography from Vilmos Zsigmond, Douglas Trumbull's lavish effects and an extraordinary score from John Williams that develops from eerie atonality à la Ligeti to the gorgeous sentiment of "When You Wish Upon a Star" over the end credits. Not content with the final result, Spielberg tinkered with the editing and inserted some new scenes to make a "Special Edition" in 1980 which ran three minutes shorter than the original, then made further revisions to create a slightly longer "Collector's Edition" in 1998. This later version deletes the mothership interior scenes that were inserted in the "Special Edition" and restores the original ending. On the DVD: CE3K is packaged here with confusing documentation that fails to make clear any differences between earlier versions of the film and this "Collector's Edition"-worse, the back cover blurb misleadingly implies that this disc is the 1980 "Special Edition" edit. It is not. A gorgeous anamorphic widescreen print of Spielberg's 1998 "Collector's Edition" edit occupies the first disc: this is the version with the original theatrical ending restored but new scenes from the "Special Edition" retained. [+]
The second disc rounds up sundry deleted scenes that were either dropped from the original version or never made it into the film at all-fans of the "Special Edition" can find the mothership interior sequence here. The excellent "making-of" documentary dates from 1997 and has interviews with almost everyone involved, including the director speaking from the set of Saving Private Ryan. Thankfully the superb picture and sound of the feature make this set entirely compelling and more than compensate for the inadequate packaging. -Mark Walker.

Review The Curse Of Frankenstein [1957] / Warner Home Video:

Britain's Hammer Studios had been making films for decades before they suddenly redefined themselves with this lurid remake of the Universal Studios horror classic. Prohibited by Universal from copying their blocky make-up (and their script, for that matter), Hammer returned to Mary Shelley's novel for inspiration and then went in its own direction. Peter Cushing plays Dr. Frankenstein as the rational scientist turned cold-blooded criminal in his campaign to discover the secret of life, committing murder to further his ends or to remove an inconvenient mistress. Christopher Lee is the pitiable creature, a terrified behemoth more innocent new-born than malevolent monster. His pale, pallid, grotesquely scarred face was so thickly applied that he emotes almost exclusively with his eyes and his awkward, stumbling gestures. The not-so-good Dr. Frankenstein is the true monster, a ruthless scientist whose rejection of superstition extends to all moral considerations. Shot in blood-red colour by Hammer stalwart Terence Fisher, the stylish, often salacious film became Hammer's biggest success to date, made horror stars out of the classically trained Cushing and Lee, and transformed the B studio into the Hammer we know and love today: the house that dripped blood. The Horror of Dracula immediately followed, reuniting the winning team of Cushing and Lee, and Cushing returned in four of six Frankenstein sequels. [+]

Review Angel, Series 4 Part 2 [2000] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

The second half of Angel's fourth year is a wild ride with no brakes and few stand-alone episodes. To recap, Los Angeles has fallen into perpetual night; Angel has mislaid his soul again; and something odd is going on with Cordelia, who is uncharacteristically aware of the effect of every word she utters. Wesley and Gunn are fighting over Fred; Lorne's ability to read souls is getting clouded, even when they sing karaoke; and the wounded Lilah is the only survivor of their former nemesis, the law firm of Wolfram and Hart, after a visit from the horned rock-like Beast. Things can only get worse-and, inventively and surprisingly, they do. Angel started off as an anthology show but in this season became so arc-heavy as to be almost impenetrable to the new viewer-but for the initiated it is as tense and suspenseful as 24 and even more prepared to put all of its characters in jeopardy. Things are so bad with the Beast, its hidden master and Angelus, that Faith (Eliza Dushku) breaks out of jail and back into the show to help out and Willow makes a surprise visit from Buffy. Particular praise is due to Gina Torres for her air of whimsical menace as the goddess Jasmine and to David Boreanaz for his silver-tongued devilry as Angelus and his brooding charm as Angel. -Roz Kaveney.
