Review Poltergeist [1982] / MGM Entertainment:What a combo! Tobe Hooper, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, teamed up with family-orientated producer Steven Spielberg to make Poltergeist. The film is about a haunted suburban tract home in a development very much like the one in Arizona in which Spielberg was raised. (Because it came out the same summer as Spielberg's E. T. , it was tempting to see both movies as representing Spielberg's ambivalent feelings about childhood in suburbia. One was a fantasy, the other a nightmare. ) Spielberg also co-wrote the screenplay, which taps into primal, childlike fears of monsters under the bed, monsters in the closet, sinister clown faces, and all manner of things that go bump in the night. At first, some of the odd happenings in the house are kind of funny and amusing, but they grow gradually creepier until the film climaxes in a terrifying special-effects extravaganza when five-year-old Carole Anne (Heather O'Rourke) is kidnapped by the spooks and held hostage in another dimension. Though not nearly as frightening as Hooper's earlier magnum opus, or A Nightmare on Elm Street, which came along two years later, Poltergeist is one of the smartest and most entertaining horror pictures of its time. -Jim Emerson.

Review Bats [1999] / 4 Front Video:Bats is for everyone who misses those old Roger Corman monster movies, only it has animatronics and computer effects instead of papier-mâché. The title pretty much sums up the plot: crazed bats are running amok, disembowelling people and cattle. Only beautiful wildlife zoologist Dina Meyer and stalwart sheriff Lou Diamond Phillips can save the day. Let's be frank: the scenario is ludicrous, the dialogue awful, the special effects unconvincing-try as they might, the bats just aren't that scary-but what does it matter? The movie rips along effectively. There's always a bat attack just around the corner and the director makes liberal use of all kinds of editing and camera effects, including adistorted bat-cam point of view that makes no sense at all but is pretty entertaining. Various scenes imitate Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, but lack even a hint of that film's eerie precision. The actors play it straight without trying to be particularly serious. All in all, Bats knows what it is-trash-horror-and accomplishes its ends with good humour. Review The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari:A milestone of the silent film era and one of the first "art films" to gain international acclaim, this eerie German classic from 1919 remains the most prominent example of German expressionism in the emerging art of the cinema. Stylistically, the look of the film's painted sets-distorted perspectives, sharp angles, twisted architecture-was designed to reflect (or express) the splintered psychology of its title character, a sinister figure who uses a lanky somnambulist (Conrad Veidt) as a circus attraction. But when Caligari and his sleepwalker are suspected of murder, their novelty act is surrounded by more supernatural implications. With its mad-doctor scenario, striking visuals, and a haunting, zombie-like character at its centre, Caligari was one of the first horror films to reach an international audience, sending shock waves through artistic circles and serving as a strong influence on the classic horror films of the 1920s, 30s, and beyond.
