Review The Texas Chainsaw Massacre [1999] / 4 Front Video:This sensational, extremely influential, 1974 low-budget horror movie directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, Lifeforce, Salem's Lot), may be notorious for its title, but it's also a damn fine piece of moviemaking. And it's blood-curdling scary, too. Loosely based on the true crimes of Ed Gein (also a partial inspiration for Psycho), the original Jeffrey Dahmer, Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows a group of teenagers who pick up a hitchhiker and wind up in a backwoods horror chamber where they're held captive, tortured, chopped up, and impaled on meat hooks by a demented cannibalistic family, including a character known as Leatherface who maniacally wields one helluva chainsaw. The movie's powerful sense of dread is heightened by its grainy, semi-documentary style-but it also has a wicked sense of humour (and not that camp, self-referential variety that became so tiresome in subsequent horror films of the 70s, 80s and 90s). OK, in case you couldn't tell, it's "not for everyone", but as a landmark in the development of the horror/slasher genre, it ranks with Psycho, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. -Jim Emerson.

Review The Seventh Curse - Special Edition - Plus Cinema Trailer / Mia Video Entertainment Ltd:A standout "midnight movie" thrill-fest from Hong Kong circa 1986. Everything under the sun comes rushing at us at 90 miles an hour. It begins as a cop action film but quickly becomes a globetrotting supernatural adventure set in jungle Thailand. A travelling scientist witnesses a savage native ritual and receives an icky curse for his pains: he is forced to swallow a bolus of bloody goo that causes periodic cork-popping spurts of fluid from his limbs: the Zits from Hell. Splatterific production numbers include flying killer alien-baby monsters, a spinal-cord-eating walking skeleton (a. k. a. "The Old Ancestor"), a huge stone-block Baby Press (don't ask), and a troupe of Ninja monks who fight on ropes dangling from a giant Buddha. Chow Yun-fat has a virtual cameo as the pipe-puffing occultist Wisely (the smarty-pants Peter Cushing figure), who offs the scariest monster with a handy rocket launcher. The original Chinese title, Dr. [+]
Yuen and Wisely, names the heroes of two long-running series of pulp novels by Ai Hong (aka Ni Kuang), who also wrote every other major kung fu movie of the 1970s, from One-Armed Swordsman to Fist of Fury. (The writer appears as himself in a framing cocktail party sequence, introducing his two heroes to each other. ) There are several other Wisely films, including the glorious Legend of Wisely (with Sam Huim in the title role) and the lamentable Bury Me High. Director Lan Wei-tsang also helmed the much less satisfying Phoenix King and Saga of the Phoenix, with Yuen Biao. -David Chute.

Review Halloween 5 - The Revenge Of Michael Myers [1989] / Digital Entertainment Ltd:Starting around Halloween 4, that masked nut Michael Myers stopped chasing his sister (played by Jamie Lee Curtis in the first and second films, as well as Halloween H20) and went after his niece. Now he's chasing her around again in part 5, but it's a lot of other people who die in the process. Donald Pleasence continues his mad-doctor bit from the earlier movies, Danielle Harris is the unfortunate relation, and Donald L. Shanks plays the monster. The film is an improvement on parts 2 and 4 (part 3 having nothing to do with Michael Myers), but it still amounts to routine slaughter with none of John Carpenter's stylistic brilliance from the original movie. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review Lexx - Vol. 1.3 - Series 1, Episode 3 - Eating Pattern [1997] / Contender Entertainment Group:A "Light Universe" and a "Dark Zone" keep good and bad apart for the characters of Lexx, even though it's often hard to tell the difference between the two in this offbeat and unique sci-fi show that delights in its own nastiness. The show's Canadian creators, "Supreme Beans" Paul Donovan, Lex Gigeroff, and Jeffrey Hirschfield intended every episode to be, in their words, "a nasty adventure". With flashes of nudity and surgical gore, and a collection of extreme hairstyles and accents, the overall look is often akin to a sci-fi Eurotrash. Event Horizon and The Fifth Element seem to have taken something from the show, and despite a whole team of designers it in turn owes something to David Lynch's Dune. Aboard the stolen 10-kilometre-long spaceship Lexx (designed to look like a dragonfly) are the "Dirty Three-and-a-Half": insufferable coward Stanley H Tweedle (Brian Downey), the Edward Scissorhands clone and 2000 years-dead Kai (Michael McManus), decapitated and lovestruck robot head 790 (voiced by writer Hirschfield) and the skimpily dressed Zev (19-year-old Eva Habermann). It's with the last of these characters that the show generated its main audience and proved itself totally indifferent to regular boundaries of TV formatting. After four 90-minute-long movies (really just an extended pilot), it took time for a financial commitment to secure a second season. Then Habermann took on other work, leaving the show without its central babe allure. The creators' answer was to kill off Zev and then immediately resurrect her as Xev (Xenia Seeberg) in a manner far more inventive than Dr Who or even Dallas! A disregard both for genre conventions and good taste makes the show a constant series of surprises: by the time of the third season, the expression "anything goes" had long passed being understatement. On this tape: In "Eating Pattern" the show takes its obsession with gory dismemberment to the edge. [+]
There's a little of Soylent Green to the tale of what makes "Pattern" a desirable food-drug on the garbage planet chanced and fed upon by The Lexx. Rutger Hauer plays his leading role of Bog with gleeful camp while the limbs fly. His people are both taunted and haunted by the alluring Wist (Doreen Jacobi) who turns out to be both disease and cure. The episode is not for viewers with delicate stomachs, but there is the "Pattern Song" to enjoy as well as the immortal line: "Your worm is your friend. " Another documentary finishes off the tape, but is a little more general than its predecessors. -Paul Tonks.

Review Godzilla - The Return Of Godzilla [1984] [1998] / ITV DVD:As "gigantic monster reptile attacks New York" movies go, you've got to admit that Godzilla delivers the goods, although its critical drubbing and box-office disappointment were arguably deserved. It's a shameless, uninspired crowd-pleaser that's content to serve up familiar action with the advantage of really fantastic special effects, and if you expect nothing more you'll be one among millions of satisfied customers. There's really no other way to approach it-you just have to accept the fact that Independence Day creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin are unapologetic plagiarists, incapable of anything more than mindless spectacle that can play in any cinema in the world without dubbing or subtitles. The whole movie plays out like a series of highlights stolen from previous blockbusters of the 1990s; it's little more than a rehash of the Jurassic Park movies. The derivative script is so trivial that it's unworthy of comment, apart from a few choice laughs and the casting of Michael Lerner as New York's mayor, whose name is Ebert and who closely resembles a certain well-known movie critic. Perhaps that's a clever hint that this movie's essentially critic-proof. It's stupid but it's fun, and for most audiences that's a fitting definition of mainstream Hollywood entertainment. -Jeff Shannon Zorro, a pop-fiction creation invented by Johnston McCulley in 1918, is given new blood in this fast-moving and engaging version. Director Martin Campbell wisely instils a measure of frivolity into the deftly choreographed action sequences, while letting a serious tone creep in when appropriate. This covers much ground under the banner of romantic-action-adventure and it does so most excellently. [+]

Review Alien Resurrection [1997] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:Perhaps these films are like the Star Trek movies: the even-numbered episodes are the best ones. Certainly Alien Resurrection film (directed by French stylist Jean-Pierre Jeunet) is an improvement on Alien 3, with a script that breathes exciting new life into the franchise. This chapter is set even further in the future, where scientists on a space colony have cloned both the alien and Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), who died in Alien 3; in doing so, however, they've mixed alien DNA with Ripley's human chromosomes, which gives Ripley surprising power (and a bad attitude). A band of smugglers comes aboard only to discover the new race of aliens-and when the multi-mouthed melonheads get loose, no place is safe. But, on the plus side, they have Ripley as a guide to help them get out. Winona Ryder is on hand as the smugglers' most unlikely crew-member (with a secret of her own), but this one is Sigourney's all the way. -Marshall Fine Alien: Resurrection, the fourth entry in the franchise, is directed by French stylist Jean-Pierre Jeunet in a much more straightforward action-adventure manner than its predecessor, the dark and confusing Alien 3.
