Review Jade's Dance Workout [2002] / Contender Entertainment Group:As well as dropping two dress sizes since leaving the Big Brother house, Jade Goodey's also dropped the incessant banter that made her so watchable. In Jade's Dance Workout, the Jade who doesn't take herself seriously is seriously presented as a dance-fitness coach. According to the work-out's sell, the Big Brother contestant loathes the gym and managed to lose weight and tone up thanks to dancing. Yet in the interview (featured on the DVD) Jade mentions a personal trainer. and a gym. Not surprisingly she neither looks nor acts the dance part. With four funky guys strutting their fab professional dance bodies, unfortunately Jade is shown up for what she is: inept. Jade aside, an ace soundtrack, great moves and an accessible work-out (featuring a fun 10-minute warm-up, a 30-minute work-out that isn't too demanding and a five-minute toning cool-down) make this a fun way to get moving and master some flash stuff for the dance-floor. In fact, had this been presented by the choreographer himself, Fame Academy's Kevin Adams, this would have had huge appeal. On the DVD: a so-called interview simply features a few sentences on a list of subjects, without capturing Jade's humour. Most revealing, and certainly the only interesting section of the entire DVD, is the behind-the-scenes feature, which confirms this dance charade is nothing but an ego-boosting job. -Lorna V.

Review Dance Workout With Helen [2001] / Contender Entertainment Group:Dance Workout with Helen might not be the fitness equivalent of rocket science, but both the makers and Helen as presenter/instructor have created a bit of chemistry. Cynics will be keen to dismiss Big Brother contestant Helen Adams as a third-rate star jumping onto a celebrity-fitness bandwagon. But the dizzy Welsh hairdresser proves that she knows a thing or two about teaching absolute beginners. If you want something really easy and un-intimidating to get you moving and smiling in your living room-without experts droning on about fat loss and dieting and without a celebrity and expert competing for attention-this is it. The work-out begins with a 10-minute warm-up, a 25-minute aerobic session, and a 10-minute cool-down and tone-up. Helen's four-year career as a dance teacher is evident in her approach. Instead of shouting out instructions she speaks them in time to the music, as well as helpfully indicating directions. Her silliness and the fact that she sometimes gets the moves slightly wrong won't go down well with fitness fanatics, but she makes no pretence about appealing to them anyway. And only those with a sense of humour will appreciate the glittery set featuring giant letters spelling Helen. -Lorna V.

Review Billy Blanks' Tae-Bo - Vol. 2 [2000] / Ilc Prime:Tae-Bo 2 is the follow-up workout to Billy Blanks' massively successful Tae-Bo: The Future of Fitness. As with the original, it's a two-part tape consisting of a live half-hour workout and an instructional section which introduces the basic moves of Tae-Bo (this is the same segment as the first video). The secret of Tae-Bo is simple: it's a high-energy workout that is easy and fun to do and involves no extra equipment or special preparation. Just makes sure you've got space in your living-room for some shadow-boxing, switch on the tape and off you go. For anyone looking for a more advanced course than the original, this is not it. Tae-Bo 2 is a new workout routine, providing an alternative to the first tape, but goes no further. Thus it's best viewed as an additional session, allowing Tae-Bo enthusiasts a choice of workouts if they get tired of the first tape. Repeating the instructional session from the first tape does seem a bit mean, however, especially as a more advanced workout might have been more useful at this stage. But the infectious enthusiasm of host Billy Blanks goes a long way towards keeping both your interest and energy levels up during the workout. If the elderly lady bouncing and punching with such gusto behind Billy can do it, so can you: go on, as Billy says, "get fit, lose weight, have fun, be strong". [+]

Review Pilates Weekly Workout With Lynne Robinson [1998] / Pilates:"Pilates tackles the deep structural foundations of the body", explains instructor Lynne Robinson. "Every movement is performed slowly and with control, which means you can't cheat, and the end result is a body which is long and lean, supple and strong. " This workout presents three 25-minute Pilates-based exercise sessions that aim to change the way you use your muscles. You can choose one to do each day, or put them together when you have the time and inclination for a long workout. Each movement emphasises the core muscles of the abdomen and back. You don't need any previous experience because the introduction shows you how to use these muscles through alignment, stabilising and breathing, and Robinson carefully instructs the nuances of every movement. The mood is quiet and controlled, similar to the concentration of yoga. Workout 1 emphasises creating a "girdle of strength", spinal flexibility, and arm and shoulder toning. Workout 2 keeps working on the stabilisation muscles, and adds buttocks, legs and feet. Workout 3 combines exercises and adds complexity for co-ordination, balance and sensory awareness. [+]
At the end is a relaxation sequence. Robinson is an excellent instructor: knowledgeable, mature, patient and clear. You will need a mat, ankle weights, light dumbbells, pole, towel, tennis ball and cushion. -Joan Price.

Review Rosemary Conley - The Essential [2002] / 2 Entertain Video:Rosemary Conley's Seven-Day Slim Down is more than a best-of compilation, it's a fitness regime in its own right. The slimming guru might have declared that The Ultimate Body Workout was to be her last, but fans will be delighted that she's gone back on her word to produce a combination of her favourite sequences from her four videos. The seven sessions designed for each day of the week last from 14-25 minutes and address different aspects of fitness: aerobic, toning, targeting certain body areas, incorporating weights and being chair (office) based. With a set that looks like Changing Rooms gone over-enthusiastic, leotards reminiscent of the 1980s, plenty of good old-fashioned aerobic moves, and stomping disco music, this is hardly modern stuff. But Conley knows her market-based on her dieting clubs-and knows that this market laps up her formula. The smiles and glows of her participants featured in the seven sessions are an indication of the adoration accorded to their dieting icon. Cynics might sneer, but you can't fault Conley for once again coming up trumps with a format that works on every level: easy to follow, effective but not exhausting, upbeat, unpretentious and all in all accessible. On the DVD: The Seven-Day Slim Down on disc comes with itemised scenes which makes daily selection painless, plus there is an extra on circuit training. The informative section on menu planning offers comprehensive advice on exactly what to eat and fat-saving tips. Conley's low-fat premise might be out of date in relation to the current high protein-low carbohydrates fashion, but it obviously works for some. [+]
The success stories feature dramatic extremes of super-fat and miserable women turned slim and super-happy. Best of the extras is Conley interviewing her choreographer Mary Morris, a fascinating fitness expert with 30 years experience. -Lorna V.
