Review Friends - Series 7 - Episodes 21-23 / Warner Home Video:Lots happened behind the scenes between seasons and early on in the seventh year of the hit comedy, leaving audiences speculating that this might be the last. Perry became seriously ill again, and returned looking more emaciated than eve r. Cox regained weight, but despite finishing Scream 3 happily, things were already rocky with David Arquette. Much was made in the press about Aniston marrying Brad Pitt, of course, but the real news (allaying fans' fears) was NBC's expensive renewal of the cast for two years at $750,000 per episode each (more than six times their previous increase). On-screen, at least there was Chandler and Monica's engagement lasting the whole year, despite predictable ups and downs (eg: "T. O. W. The Truth About London" revealing that Monica fancied Joey). By the time we finally get to "T. O. [+]W. Chandler's Dad" (Kathleen Turner), it seems inevitable that the two-part finale will be an insane mess-but with a happy-ish ending. Sure enough, "T. O. W. Chandler and Monica's Wedding" features Gary Oldman joining in the chaos as Chandler repeatedly goes missing. Other star-turns in the year were Seinfeld's Jason Alexander as a suicidal Office Manager, Susan Sarandon as soap queen bitch Jessica Lockhart, Denise Richards as one of Ross and Monica's endless number of cousins and Winona Ryder as a surprise old friend, prompting "T. O. W. Rachel's Big Kiss". But perhaps the most telling instalment of this weirdly atmospheric year was "T. O. W. They All Turn Thirty". It suggested that maybe the Friends are all getting too old to carry on living their frivolous lives the same way after all. Paul Tonks.

Review Red Dwarf - Complete Series 1-3 [Remastered] [1988] / 2 Entertain Video:The slipcase enclosing this box set of the first three Red Dwarf series proclaims: "New model sequences, new footage, new effects. Digitally remastered sound, digitally enhanced pictures and brand new wooshy [sic] noises!!". It's all a far cry from when the Beeb simply re-used their old Doctor Who tapes, to the fans' subsequent consternation. As it happens, the tarting-up of these earliest episodes from the only successful sci-fi comedy show ever is seamlessly unobtrusive. The premise of the show-a vast spaceship blundering through the cosmos, inhabited by the last human being in the universe, a hologram of his dead bunkmate and a Little Richard lookalike evolved from a cat-was, from the earliest stages, redeemed by its detailed and careful deployment of classic sci-fi plot devices-time travel, virtual worlds, genetic engineering, you name it-with all the care and attention of "serious" sci-fi. However, in Red Dwarf, these concepts are shot through with obfuscation, trivia and the unerring sense that everything is about to go terribly, terribly wrong. So it is, then, that in a parallel universe the crew have feminine counterparts, a new form of spaceship drive looks suspiciously like a large box with stop and start buttons and jigsaws are completed by mysterious forces, to cite but three of the endless highlights contained herein. -Roger Thomas.

Review Open All Hours [1976] / 2 Entertain Video:Written by Roy Clarke, who was also responsible for Last Of The Summer Wine, Open All Hours exhibited a similarly relaxed attitude towards plot. Ronnie Barker plays Arkwright, the miserly grocer who longs to marry busty Nurse Gladys (Lynda Baron) ("Let's strike while the iron's lukewarm". ) David Jason, meanwhile, plays Arkwright's nephew Granville, a romantic who chafes at the confines of shop life and lusts after one "Gloria" (of whom we only ever catch a rear-end view). A series of customers offer little side vignettes, gossipy tittle tattle and tales of their own sexual frustrations. This is a special 90-minute long edition, featuring the pilot. Although it was made in 1983, Open All Hours seems to belong to an earlier era still, in its cosily nostalgic, saucy postcard worldview of everyday Northern folk, a world in which Granville still does his rounds in a cloth cap on a delivery bike. The script creaks with double entendres and how amusing you'll find Arkwright depends on how amusing you find a man with a stammer. Don't expect Steptoe-style pathos or wit, here. Open All Hours is notable, however, in that it constituted Jason's comedy apprenticeship under Barker, standing him in good stead for Only Fools And Horses. -David Stubbs.

Review The Italian Job [1969] / 4 Front Video:The greatest Brit-flick crime caper comedy of all time, 1969's The Italian Job towers mightily above its latter-day mockney imitators. After Alfie but before Get Carter Michael Caine is the hippest ex-con around, bedding the birds (several at a time) and spouting immortal one-liners ("You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"). The inheritor of a devious plan to steal gold bullion in the traffic-choked streets of Turin, Caine recruits a misfit team of genial underworld types-including a lecherous Benny Hill and three plummy public-schoolboy rally drivers-and uses the occasion of an England-Italy football match as cover for the heist. In his final screen appearance, Noel Coward joyfully sends up his own patriotic persona, and there are small though priceless cameos from the likes of Irene Handl and John Le Mesurier. But The Italian Job's real stars are the three Mini Coopers-patriotically decorated red, white and blue-that run rings round every other vehicle in an immortal car-chase sequence, which preserves forever the British public's love affair with the little car. Quincy Jones provided the irreverent music, naturally, while the cliffhanger ending thumbs its nose at anything so un-hip as a resolution. It's all unashamedly jingoistic-ridiculously, gleefully, absurdly so-but the whole sums up the joie de vivre of the 1960s so perfectly that future historians need only look here to learn why the decade was swinging. On the DVD: The Italian Job disc contains three all-new documentaries-"The Great Idea" (conception), "The Self-Preservation Society" (casting), and "Get a Bloomin' Move On" (stunts)-which dovetail into a good 68-minute "making of" featurette. Contributors include scriptwriter Troy Kennedy Martin and Producer Michael Deeley, who also crops up on the sporadically interesting commentary track with author of The Making of The Italian Job, Matthew Field. The deleted "Blue Danube" waltz scene is also included, with optional commentary. [+]The print is a decent anamorphic transfer of the original 2. 35:1 ratio, and the soundtrack has been remastered to Dolby 5. 1. The animated Mini Cooper menus set the tone perfectly. -Mark Walker.
