Review Operation Good Guys - Series 2 [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:

Armed with a keen satirical sense and some outstanding improvisational comedy Operation Good Guys, the BBC's underrated spoof docu-soap about a bumbling undercover police squad, returns for a second six-part series. The weathered docu-soap format is mercilessly, and deservedly, mocked to great effect as the Good Guys are forced to return to basic training while desperately trying to prove to the BBC bosses that their supposedly action-packed exploits are ratings winners. "Forensics" finds the team's investigation of a sweet shop robbery hindered by sugar overdoses of penny sweets, while "Stardust" sees the boys tutoring visiting stars Jonny Lee Miller and Jude Law in the nuances of police work-specifically a botched armed assault. The two-part finale finds DI Beach and co in Spain, where the BBC's demands for action results in "Operation Zorro"-a marvellously and ludicrously overblown action-movie pastiche. Without doubt, it's absurd, stupid and childish, but it's funny in equal measure, as directors/stars Dominic Anciano and Ray Burdislet the superb improvisation of the cast accentuate the documentary style. David Gillespie dominates with his brilliant performance as DI Beach, and while more slapstick-oriented than the last series, this follow-up is too good to be ignored-especially with the BBC in such a rare self-mocking mode. -Danny Graydon.

Review William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream [1999] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

By far the best thing about director Michael Hoffman's A Midsummer Night's Dream is the extraordinary all-star cast, which follows the precedent created by Kenneth Branagh's Italian-set romantic Shakespeare comedy, Much Ado About Nothing (1993), of mixing major Hollywood stars, here Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer, with top British talent, in this instance Christian Bale, Rupert Everett, Roger Rees, David Strathairn and Dominic West. Kline makes a fine Nick Bottom, with Pfeiffer equally good as the fairy queen Titania and Everett brooding effectively as Oberon. Unfortunately, while both look ravishing, it is hard to tell which actress between Anna Friel (Brookside) and Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) gives the most wretched performance. Both are completely out of their depth the moment they begin to speak, and utterly outclassed by the excellent Sophie Marceau. Shot in Tuscany and set in the 19th century, parts of the film are extraordinarily beautiful, while other sections could have benefited from some judicious special effects magic. This is not a bad movie, but it is rather uninspired, lacking any real imaginative grasp of the play. In contrast, the much less well known and lower budget Royal Shakespeare Company version of 1996 positively revels in the fantastically surreal possibilities this timeless text. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Bringing Up Baby [1938] / 4 Front Video:

"The love impulse in man", says a psychiatrist in Bringing Up Baby, "frequently reveals itself in terms of conflict. " That's for sure. For a primer on the rules and regulations of the classic screwball comedy, which throws love and conflict into close proximity, look no further. A straight-laced paleontologist (Cary Grant) loses a dinosaur bone to a dog belonging to free-spirited heiress Katharine Hepburn. In trying to retrieve said bone, Grant is drawn into the vortex surrounding the delicious Hepburn, which becomes a flirtatious pas de deux that will transform both of them. Director Howard Hawks plays the complications as a breathless escalation of their "love impulse" yet the movie is nonetheless romantic for all its speed. (Hawks's His Girl Friday, also with Grant, goes even faster. ) Grant and Hepburn are a match made in movie heaven, in sync with each other throughout. Not a great box-office success when first released, Bringing Up Baby has since taken its place as a high-water mark of the screwball form and it was used as a model for Peter Bogdanovich's What's Up, Doc? -Robert Horton.

Review Flintstones, The / The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas [2000] / 4 Front Video:

Kids will enjoy the dinosaurs, gaudy prehistoric decor, and cartoon humour of The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas; but adults will find fewer morsels of entertainment, although the sly performance of Alan Cumming (Eyes Wide Shut) as the Great Gazoo, an alien sent to Earth to observe human mating behaviour is a highlight. The movie begins before Fred (Mark Addy from The Full Monty) and Wilma (Kirsten Johnston from Third Rock from the Sun) Flintstone ever met, back when Wilma was an unhappy rich girl seeking happiness in a less snobby environment. Running away from her smothering mother (Joan Collins!) and an oily suitor, Chip Rockefeller (Thomas Gibson from Dharma and Greg), she winds up at a drive-in restaurant where she meets Betty (Jane Krakowski from Ally McBeal), a waitress who thinks Wilma is actually homeless and invites the runaway to live with her. Our blue-collar heroes, Fred and Barney Rubble (Stephen Baldwin from The Usual Suspects), ask the girls out on a double date, and before long Fred and Wilma bond over bowling. But it turns out that Chip is in debt to a ruthless loan shark and needs Wilma's money, so he invites the couples to his new casino in Rock Vegas, where he plots nefariously to ruin their blossoming love. The plot holds no surprises and the dialogue is clumsy, but there's a blithe dimwittedness to the whole affair that makes it curiously inoffensive. -Bret Fetzer, Amazon. com.

Review Career Girls [1997] / Cinema Club:

This simple comedy by British filmmaker Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies) concerns the reunion of two women friends from university days who try hard, although awkwardly, to rediscover their early closeness. They succeed beautifully and experience a series of chance encounters with old friends and lovers whom they once knew together. Katrin Cartlidge (Breaking the Waves) and Lynda Steadman are outstanding, playing their characters via flashback in their grungy, early 20s as well as their more polished, contemporary selves at age 30. Following the complex ambitions of Secrets and Lies, Career Girls almost looks like a holiday for Leigh, but it is no less the rich product of his now-famous process of symbiotic rehearsal and writing. The film is also graced by some of the most delicate passages of remembered love between two people seen in a long time. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review The Admirable Crichton aka Paradise Lagoon (1957) / Columbia Pictures:

Lord Loam has modern ideas about his household; he believes in treating his servants as his equals - at least sometimes. His butler, Crichton, still believes that members of the serving class should know their place and be happy there. But when the Loam family are shipwrecked on a desert island with the self-reliant Crichton and lady's maid Tweeny, the class system is put to the test.
