Review Gentlemen Prefer Blondes [1951] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Anita Loos' old story from the 1920s about a pair of single women in search of husbands, gets a makeover in Howard Hawks' 1953 musical. The remake stars Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe as two friends who go to Paris looking for mates. The film is charged by Hawks's stylish snap, a famous set piece or two (Monroe descending that staircase while singing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend"), Russell's wit and songs by Leo Robin and Jule Styne. The film may largely be a fluff project best remembered as a showcase for its leading actresses, but then Monroe and Russell rarely got such extended opportunities to prove that they were more than cinematic icons. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review Road Trip - Unseen And Explicit [2000] / 4 Front Video:Road Trip is a mostly agreeable, by-the-numbers teen flick with a handful of inspired sequences, most of them involving MTV's resident disturbed soul, Tom Green. It concerns a sleepy University of Ithaca student named Josh (Breckin Meyer) who accidentally mails a video of his sexual encounter with an infatuation (Amy Smart) to his long time girlfriend (Rachel Blanchard), who's seemingly avoiding him while at school in Austin, Texas. Naturally, he recruits some pals-Seann William Scott as the lech, DJ Qualls as the hopeless nerd and Paulo Costanzo as the doper genius-to hit the open highway and intercept the package. Even more naturally, mayhem ensues: a car explodes, a bus is stolen, a nerd is deflowered, French toast is horribly violated and an elderly man bogarts both pot and Viagra. The film's humour is more democratic than politically correct, as everyone-women and minority characters, not just the hipster white guys-have a hand in the high jinks. Green plays Barry Manilow (no, not that one), a professional student (eight years and counting)-he relates the film's story to sceptical prospective students while leading them on a tour of the college. In particular, in an already justly famous sequence of scenes, he sadistically anticipates and endeavours to accelerate a mouse's demise at the jaws of a python. It's very much in the vein of American Pie, perhaps a smidgen tamer, but at least its characters don't really learn any dopey lessons in the end. Director and co-screenwriter Todd Phillips, who earlier made the much-questioned documentary Frat House, again proves he's more adept at staging fictional comic sequences than real ones. -David Kronke, Amazon. Review Daria - Sibling Rivalry / Paramount Home Entertainment:The eponymous heroine of Daria began life as a character in the cult MTV cartoon Beavis & Butthead. Daria, of the enormous spectacles, held a resolutely unsmiling demeanour and an immensely amusing name (with the judicious addition of one syllable, it becomes a common gastric complaint). With these qualities she became an obvious candidate for a series of her own, offering the perfect study of a certain kind of adolescent familiar to anyone who is, or has been a 15-year-old who is utterly unimpressed with everything-regarding all human activity as no more than the sum of its absurd fundamentals. With a sister who sounds like she has just stepped out of a Barbie catalogue and a gaggle of class mates, some with less than one brain cell between them, the basis for "disaster and woe" to befall poor Daria is instantly set up. The joy of each episode of Daria is watching her start out the day determined to see the worst in any given situation as the world in general once again lives down to her expectations. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Anger Management [2003] / Uca Catalogue:The irresistible pairing of Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler is the best reason to see Anger Management, a comedy that might have been subtitled "The Funny and the Furious". Nicholson and especially Sandler have screen personas that partially rely on pent-up anxieties, so there's definite potential in teaming them as a mild-mannered designer of pet clothing for chubby cats (Sandler) who's been ordered to undergo anger management therapy with a zany counsellor (Nicholson) prone to occasional tantrums and devious manipulation. Surely this meandering comedy looked better on the page; director Peter Segal scores a few lucky scenes (particularly Sandler's encounter with a Buddhist monk, played by John C Reilly), but a flood of cameos (Heather Graham, Woody Harrelson, Rudolph Giuliani, and others) can't match the number of laughs that fall flat. As Sandler's understanding girlfriend, Marisa Tomei plays a pivotal role in a happy ending that leaves everyone smiling, with the possible exception of the audience. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Idle Hands [1999] / 4 Front Video:Despite all the pot-smoking in Idle Hands, the message here seems to be that too many bong hits will take you on a one-way trip to the devil's playground. That's what happens to Anton (Devon Sawa), a wasted teen who's so perpetually zonked on weed that he doesn't notice his parents have been slaughtered by an evil force that then possesses Anton's right hand, taking on a wildly homicidal life of its own after Anton chops it off with a butcher knife. The first victims are Anton's pals Mick (teen-movie stalwart Seth Green), who gets a beer bottle embedded in his skull, and Pnub (Elden Henson), whose head is lopped off by a rotary saw blade, and later reattached with a barbecue fork and duct tape. (Did we mention that Mick and Pnub turn into undead jokesters? It's that kind of movie. ) This unoriginal idea is little more than an excuse for gross-out effects and easy one-liners, and then Vivica A. Fox appears as the demon-buster who knows how to kill the hand once and for all. It's fun to a point, and certain to be a popular Halloween hit with its intended teenage audience, but you can't help wishing this movie had tried harder to be something more than a collection of crude and gory gags. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.

Review Friends - Series 7 - Episodes 9-12 [2001] / Warner Home Video:Lots happened behind the scenes between seasons and early on in the seventh year of the hit comedy, leaving audiences speculating that this might be the last. Perry became seriously ill again, and returned looking more emaciated than eve r. Cox regained weight, but despite finishing Scream 3 happily, things were already rocky with David Arquette. Much was made in the press about Aniston marrying Brad Pitt, of course, but the real news (allaying fans' fears) was NBC's expensive renewal of the cast for two years at $750,000 per episode each (more than six times their previous increase). On-screen, at least there was Chandler and Monica's engagement lasting the whole year, despite predictable ups and downs (eg: "T. O. W. The Truth About London" revealing that Monica fancied Joey). By the time we finally get to "T. O. [+]
W. Chandler's Dad" (Kathleen Turner), it seems inevitable that the two-part finale will be an insane mess-but with a happy-ish ending. Sure enough, "T. O. W. Chandler and Monica's Wedding" features Gary Oldman joining in the chaos as Chandler repeatedly goes missing. Other star-turns in the year were Seinfeld's Jason Alexander as a suicidal Office Manager, Susan Sarandon as soap queen bitch Jessica Lockhart, Denise Richards as one of Ross and Monica's endless number of cousins and Winona Ryder as a surprise old friend, prompting "T. O. W. Rachel's Big Kiss". But perhaps the most telling instalment of this weirdly atmospheric year was "T. O. W. They All Turn Thirty". It suggested that maybe the Friends are all getting too old to carry on living their frivolous lives the same way after all. Paul Tonks.

Review Bulletproof Monk [2003] / Pathe Distribution:The tremendous charisma of Chow Yun-Fat anchors this entertaining comic-book romp. Bulletproof Monk centres around a monk with no name (Chow) dedicated to protecting a sacred scroll that can give world-manipulating power to anyone who reads it. A hidden Nazi has been pursuing the scroll for 60 years and has finally caught up with the monk in present-day New York City; meanwhile, the monk suspects he may have found a disciple in a petty thief (Seann William Scott) who's learned kung fu from watching double-feature chopsocky flicks. Don't let the presence of Chow Yun-Fat lead you to expect much substance-this doesn't have the emotional scope of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or the visual panache of Hard-Boiled. But Bulletproof Monk is a cheerful, tightly edited, unpretentious action flick with flashes of humour, good for a mindless evening's entertainment. -Bret Fetzer.
