The Simpsons: Backstage Pass is a veritable rock & roll extravaganza: you'll hear a classical version of "Insane in the Membrane" and watch The Who destroying rubbish with pure guitar power. It also features guest performances by The Who, Cypress Hill, The Smashing Pumpkins, Peter Frampton and Spinal Tap. In "Homerpalooza", Homer has a mini mid-life crisis caused by his inability to recognise new bands in the local record store (not even Sonic Youth). The result is a trip for him and the kids to the "Hullabalooza" festival where Homer fulfils his rock star dreams by touring as part of the freak show. "A Tale of Two Springfields" sees the town divided by a change in area code, which only The Who can solve with their infinite wisdom: "Why don't you get phones with auto-dial?". In "The Otto Show" Milhouse and Bart enjoy their first outing to a rock gig to see top super-group, Spinal Tap. Finally, "Homer's Barbershop Quartet" offers the rare opportunity to see Homer sing as part of Springfield's B Sharps, who allegedly rocked America back in 1985! On the DVD: The Simpsons: Backstage Pass offers a collection of Otto's finest moments, proving what a cooool guy the local bus driver is. Otherwise the disc is barren of extras. Review The Good Life - Series 2 - Episodes 1 To 3 / Acorn Media:

Time has, in general, not been kind to 1970s sitcom-land, but The Good Life (1975-78), while inhabiting a cosy world few would recognise today, has managed to hold its place in the British public's affection. Basically a comedy of clashing cultures, the simple premise-one set of neighbours drop out of their comfortable middle class existence to lead a self-sufficient lifestyle-nevertheless yielded some rich humour. Focusing on a mere four characters, the show succeeded (and still succeeds) through the strength of its writing (by John Esmonde and Bob Larbey) and the quality of the performances. Felicity Kendal may have found herself elevated to the status of sex symbol (she was voted "Rear of the Year" during the show's initial run), but her Barbara is easily the weakest of the quartet, too often overshadowed by her well-meaning yet dominant husband. Richard Briers is excellent as Tom, a control freak hovering on the brink of obsession. But the most memorable pairing is that of neighbours Jerry and Margo (Paul Eddington and Penelope Keith): Eddington's bemused husband would later be echoed in his Yes Minister role, while Keith's character has rightly become one of the most memorable in British television. It might look slightly creaky and archaic next to some more modern examples of the genre, but The Good Life isn't looking too bad for its age. -Phil Udell.

Review The Sure Thing [1985] / 4 Front Video:

Two mismatched college students (John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga) find themselves trapped together during a cross-country road trip, trying to make it home for the holidays. She can't stand him, and he just wants to get to LA, where a sexy "sure thing" is waiting to greet him with open arms. It's not hard to predict where this sweetly old-fashioned romantic comedy is going to end up, but along the way there are many pleasures to be had. Director Rob Reiner, in his second feature (after This Is Spinal Tap), has a nice eye for the kitschy flotsam found along the American highway, and his identification with the college kids doesn't condescend to them one bit. The movie helped make a star of John Cusack, who gives a delightfully spritzy performance-kind of a precursor to his similarly energetic, likeable turn in Say Anything. Given the usual crass tenor of Hollywood college movies, The Sure Thing is something to treasure. -Robert Horton.

Review Liar, Liar [1997] / Universal Pictures UK:

Jim Carrey is back in top form after his disastrous outing in The Cable Guy. As a lawyer who becomes physically unable to tell a lie for 24 hours after his son makes a magical birthday wish, Carrey learns a few brutal truths about the real meaning of life. There is very little plot, but Carrey's rubbery contortions and slapstick trickery provide just enough humour to keep you interested in this breezy bit of escapism. Not aided in Liar Liar by pets or animation, Carrey manages to do amazing and unique things with very simple props. He is also more in control of his acting than before. He is still over the top, but remains believable in some of the lower-energy scenes. An added plus is that the comedy is not as coarse as we've come to expect from him. -Rochelle O'Gorman.
