Review 200 Cigarettes / Paramount VHB 4910:In downtown Manhattan, on New Year's Eve 1981, there's a party going on-somewhere. The only problem is that amid the unfeasibly pretentious art galleries, smoky bars and bad Chinese restaurants of the East Village, nobody's quite sure where it is, how to get there or who to take along as their date. Which is a shame, because from the random gaggle of twentysomething archetypes-including broken-hearted Kevin (Paul Rudd), his loud-mouthed platonic buddy Lucy (Courtney Love), squawking Jersey girl Val (Christina Ricci), and a multitude of others-there's surely enough material for one or two sustainable couplings. As you might have guessed, 200 Cigarettes doesn't boast the most tautly woven plot (or even much of a loosely woven one). What it does have, however, is a wry charm and an engaging sense of deadpan authenticity (using enough period detail, incidentally, to put the likes of The Wedding Singer to shame). These kids not only dig Blondie and Elvis Costello, they've got the fluorescent mittens and monkey boots to prove it. But it's not just by-the-numbers early-80s nostalgia which holds the film together in the face of its vaguely shambolic structure: if the transparently not platonic shenanigans of Love and Rudd wear thin, then Kate Hudson's neurotic party girl and Ben Affleck's secretly oafish bartender ("How do you like your eggs done in the morning? Scrambled or fertilised?") are more than adequate compensation. And, amid a slew of great ensemble performances, the two minutes of cross-wired interplay between the magisterially sour Janeane Garafolo and professionally laid-back cab driver Dave Chapelle is pretty much worth your time in and of itself. -Danny Leigh.

Review The Seven Year Itch [1955] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:A married man, left alone during a hot summer, fantasises madly about the impossibly gorgeous woman living in the upstairs apartment. When the woman is Marilyn Monroe, such fantasies are the stuff of epics, and The Seven Year Itch is a memorable laugh machine. Tom Ewell, repeating his role from George Axelrod's Broadway hit, plays the itchy protagonist, whose vivid imagination gets the better of him. When Monroe finally comes downstairs and becomes friends (confiding, among other things, that she keeps her undies in the icebox in this hot weather), imagination meets reality in a merciless attack on the male libido. Ewell's crack timing is matched by Monroe's zesty comic flair, and the scene in which her white dress is blown skyward by a passing subway train has entered the encyclopaedia of great movie images. Director Billy Wilder adapted the play with Axelrod; if the film is not one of Wilder's signature works (Some Like It Hot and The Apartment would soon follow), it is nevertheless a smoothly crafted comedy. -Robert Horton, Amazon. com.

Review Educating Rita [1984] / ITV DVD:Michael Caine and the knockout Julie Walters deliver a pair of wonderful performances in this endearingly bittersweet tale of a boozily burnt-out professor's tutoring of (and subsequent tutoring by) a free-spirited cockney hairdresser determined to improve her lot in life. The basic plot won't exactly surprise anyone who's ever seen a movie before, but the ace cast (particularly Caine, who's rarely this subtle) continually finds new directions to spin off from the rather rote path. Although the end result is perhaps just a little too convinced of its own adorability to attain classic status, this remains a rarity in the genre-a feel-good film that earns its emotions honestly. A nice change of pace for director Lewis Gilbert, who is perhaps better known for his contributions to the James Bond series. -Andrew Wright.

Review Working Girl [1989] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:Melanie Griffith had a fling with stardom in this Mike Nichols comedy about an executive secretary (Griffith) who can't get her deserved shot at upward mobility in the brokerage industry. Hardly taken seriously by male bosses, things aren't really any better for her once she starts working for a female exec (Sigourney Weaver, never more delightful), a narcissist with a boy-toy banker (Harrison Ford) and a tendency to steal the best ideas from her underlings. When Weaver's character is laid up with a broken leg, Griffith poses as a replacement wheeler-dealer, flirting with Ford and working on a new client who doesn't suspect the deception. Nichols brings a lot of snap and sass to Kevin Wade's smart script about chafing against class restrictions and perceptions. Sundry scenes are played quite charmingly, especially those of Griffith and Ford's mutual pick-up in a bar and Joan Cusack's championing of Griffith's crusade. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.
