Review Super Troopers [2002] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:Super Troopers is a dumb-and-dumber cop comedy starring the members of comedy quintet Broken Lizard, which will no doubt be unfamiliar to the majority of audiences this side of the Atlantic. Although don't let that put you off what is a no-brainer, but often very funny cop caper. The bungling patrolmen are of course hopelessly inept at solving real police work and instead spend more time battling with their nasty rivals in another police force. But when budget cuts loom, the boys have to become real cops for once to prove their worth, not just to their frustrated and long suffering boss but to each other. The gags come thick and fast and the sheer enthusiasm and timing of the cast ensure that, although very old fashioned in its comedic sensibilities, it remains a consistently entertaining and stupid in equal measure. Watch out also for a small cameo by formers 70's super heroine Lynda Wonder Woman Carter as the mayor. On the DVD: Super Troopers is packed with extras that belie its limited run and modest success at the box office. There are two commentaries by cast and director, 17 outtakes with optional commentary that are as good as anything that made the final cut and a trailer. The Dolby 5. 1 mix is sharp and often loud, and the picture quality on the whole very good. [+]

Review Nine Months [1995] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:This film represents Hugh Grant's first big bid at Hollywood stardom, on the heels of the success of Four Weddings and a Funeral. But he stumbled twice: first with this mundane comedy and then by being arrested after soliciting a prostitute near downtown Hollywood, the week before the film opened. Directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire), Nine Months was a weak reworking of a French film about an ageing bachelor (Grant) who can't decide whether to commit to the woman he loves (Julianne Moore). When she becomes pregnant, he still can't make up his mind and winds up blowing hot and cold on the subject of fatherhood, which causes tension in the relationship. There's a lot of low comedy involving Grant's best friend; Tom Arnold plays this ultra-married and child-ridden suburbanite, who makes fatherhood look like a living hell. Robin Williams has a funny cameo as a foreign doctor but in the end, the sentiment is ladled on and Grant doesn't have nearly enough funny material to work with. -Marshall Fine.

Review Absolutely Fabulous Series 1-4 Box Set [1992] / 2 Entertain Video:Absolutely Fabulous was first broadcast in 1992 and became an instant hit. Originally a sketch on the French and Saunders Show, Jennifer Saunders saw its potential and created one of the most ground-breaking and debauched comedies on British TV. Centred around the hip London fashion scene the series follows Edina (Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two women who refuse to grow up and are constantly on a mission to lose weight, gorging themselves with cocaine and/or champagne, endlessly throwing parties (or throwing up at parties), and sporting outrageous outfits, which were the height of fashion at the time-honestly sweetie! The superb comic performances reinvented the careers of Joanna Lumley and June Whitfield. Saunders meanwhile secured her status as one of Britain's top female comedians. Although its consciously chic clothing looks a little dated now, its mad characterisations endure and the jokes remain as hilariously slick and apt as ever. On the DVD: Absolutely Fabulous DVD box set comes beautifully packaged in mock velvet, with each series individually packaged inside. The original sketch from the French and Saunders Show and the pilot episode, "Mirrorball", offers all you need to understand the show's origins The commentary with Jennifer Saunders and John Ploughman on Series 4 is refreshing, owning up to the mistakes they made and the jokes that didn't work. The outtakes are funnier than the usual Hollywood blips. The 4:3 transfer is standard for a television comedy. -Nikki Disney.

Review Driving Miss Daisy [1989] / 4 Front Video:Winner of the Academy Award for best picture of 1989, this gracefully moving drama, adapted from the hit play by Alfred Uhry, chronicles the 25-year friendship between a stubborn, ageing Southern widow (Jessica Tandy) and her loyal chauffeur (Morgan Freeman). At first, the self-sufficient Miss Daisy is reluctant to accept the services of a chauffeur, but Hoke is quiet, wise and tolerant, and as the years pass the unlikely friends develop a deep mutual respect and admiration. Tandy deservedly won the Oscar for her sassy and sensitive performance, and Freeman earned an Oscar nomination for bringing quiet depth and integrity to his memorable role. Ironically, director Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies) was not nominated, but the film won Oscars for make-up and for Uhry's screenplay, in addition to a supporting actor nomination for Dan Aykroyd as Daisy's supportive son. Delicate, funny, and bittersweet, Driving Miss Daisy was a surprise hit when released, and marked the crowning achievement of Tandy's great career. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.

Review New York Stories [1989] / Cinema Club:New York Stories comprises three views of life in the city of all cities, with segments directed by Woody Allen, Francis Coppola, and Martin Scorsese. The best of the three is Scorsese's "Life Lessons", about an artist (played by Nick Nolte) who uses his hyper-success to lure beautiful, young, aspiring artists to serve as his assistant/lovers. It's an astute portrait of the nature of the New York art world. In "Life Without Zoe", Coppola portrays the life of the privileged daughter of a world-renowned flautist, whose adventures on the Upper East Side (in the upper echelons of society) play like something approaching a cartoon. Woody Allen finishes up the film with his "Oedipus Wrecks", a typical Allen number about a successful New York lawyer who's still hounded by his mother-the title tells you all you need to know. Though stronger segments to complement Scorsese's would have made the movie as a whole much more interesting and enjoyable, it does at least provide an accurate glimpse of life in the Big Apple. -James McGrath, Amazon. com.

Review Baby's Day Out [1994] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:Only a mother could love John Hughes' comedy Baby's Day Out. For anyone else, the nappy soon starts to stink. Baby Bink is kidnapped by three inept crooks, but the child escapes from their hideaway, leading to a chase through the city. Bink's journey follows the story line of his favourite bedtime book, Baby's Day Out: he goes to a zoo, a construction site, and a retirement home. Hughes, though, is following his accountant's favourite bedtime tale, "Let's rewrite Home Alone again", but with very little of the humour or impact of that smash. A number of scenes revolve around the crushing or incineration of Joe Mantegna's groin, not exactly average family fare. By way of small compensation there are some moments of levity with the crooks and a gorilla. -Keith Simanton, Amazon. com.

Review The Young Ones - The Complete Young Ones - Series 1 [1982] / 2 Entertain Video:"Have we got a video?" "No, not till series two". "What would be on it if we did, not another sickeningly nice sitcom like The Good Life?" "No, six episodes of a horrible, vile, disgusting sitcom about four students who live in the most revolting house in Britain. " "Utterly, utterly brilliant!" Like Fawlty Towers (1975/79), The Young Ones ran for just two series and 12 episodes. Every episode was packed with insane situations, wildly inventive surrealism, deranged dialogue (occasionally involving SPG, the talking hamster) side-splitting OTT cartoon violence and more bellylaughs than a 100 normal comedies. The Young Ones made stars of Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall (Bottom, was a sort-of-sequel), Nigel Planer and Alexei Sayle, while the guests were a roll-call of the finest young comedy talent. The Young Ones was, alongside Black Adder (1983-9), the best laugh of the 80s. With an atom bomb in front of the fridge, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and a proletariat revolutionary poet obsessed with Cliff Richard, it's still exhaustingly funny. Father Ted (1995-8) and Men Behaving Badly (1991-8) might be considered mutant offspring. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Like Water For Chocolate [1992] / Electric Pictures:Expect to be very hungry (and perhaps amorous) after watching this contemporary classic in the small genre of food movies that includes Babette's Feast and Big Night. Director Alfonso Arau (A Walk in the Clouds), adapting a novel by his former wife, Laura Esquivel, tells the story of a young woman (Lumi Cavazos) who learns to suppress her passions under the eye of a stern mother, but channels them into her cooking. The result is a steady stream of cuisine so delicious as to be an almost erotic experience for those lucky enough to have a bite. The film's quotient of magic realism feels a little stock, but the story line is good and Arau's affinity for the sensuality of food (and of nature) is sublime. You might want to rush off to a good Mexican restaurant afterward, but that's a good thing. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review Carry on Loving [1970] / Cinema Club:Setting a Carry On film in a marriage bureau has a certain self-serving obviousness, so it's hardly surprising that Carry On Loving milks the idea for all it's worth. The Wedded Bliss Agency is of course a pretty dubious outfit, being run by Sid (James) and Sophie Bliss (Hattie Jacques), who together are the worst possible argument both for marriage and for their own profession: they constantly snipe at each other, they aren't actually married and their sophisticated computer matching system is in fact a complete fake. The remainder of the team are mostly cast as hapless clients, with predictable but often very funny situations arising from the various mismatches engineered by the agency, such as the inevitable misunderstanding over one client's interest in modelling. Yes, the humour is about as subtle as a flatulent elephant, but you can't help entering into the spirit of the thing. If there's an outstanding performance it has to be that of Imogen Hassall, who handles her transformation from round-shouldered frump to well-bred love goddess with considerable expertise and a genuine sense of fun. On the DVD: The picture ratio is 4:3, and as is usual for this series the disc has no added features, which always seems like a terribly missed opportunity. -Roger Thomas.

Review Lover Come Back [1961] / 4 Front Video:Rock Hudson and Doris Day had one of the sweetest chemistries in the movies-as demonstrated in several light comedies, including Lover Come Back and its predecessor, 1959's Pillow Talk. The two similar films feature a handsome, duplicitous Hudson duping-then falling for-an earnest Day. In Lover Come Back, the two play Jerry Webster and Carol Templeton, rival advertising agents, vying for the same clients-until Jerry makes up a product, Vip, to get out of a scrape. As Madison Avenue catches Vip fever, Jerry falls deeper into the facade-and into love with Carol, who schemes to steal the nonexistent account away from him. Tony Randall plays Peter Ramsay, Webster's hapless boss, who's an effective foil both comically and physically as he stands next to the much taller Hudson. The trio's differing brands of humour blend charmingly: Hudson's sardonic coyness, Day's innocent sweetness and Randall's nervous edginess. Look for a pre-Brady Bunch Ann B Davis as Mille, Carol's loyal assistant, and a pre-Beverly Hillbillies Donna Douglas as Ramsay's secretary. -NF Mendoza.
