Review Every Which Way But Loose [VHS] [1978] / Warner Home Video:Clint Eastwood's 1978 comedy Every Which Way But Loose introduces Filo Beddoe, a truck driver and mechanic whose daily life is an absurd grind. He's constantly coming up short on money, love and anything else to help him get through the day, while also saddled with a loony mother (deliciously played by Ruth Gordon), a best friend (Geoffrey Lewis) who's not too swift on the uptake and an orangutan named Clyde who fights almost as well as Clint. While moonlighting as a bare-knuckle fighter, Clint finally meets the girl of his dreams (Sondra Locke), a snooty country singer who rebuffs him even as he pursues her, trailed by bikers and brawlers. It's Eastwood's magnetism and charm that make this more than a mere string of comic sketches, and things move along quickly enough to be entertaining, if a little thin. Clyde is a natural scene-stealer, but it's Ruth Gordon's crazy, cranky old coot who steals the film. -Robert Lane.

Review Teletubbies Nursery Rhymes [VHS] / 2 Entertain Video:Join Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po as they provide 65 minutes of educational entertainment for toddlers as young as one in Teletubbies Nursery Rhymes. This, the third Teletubby video, has all the hallmarks of the BBC television show including the cheerful and affectionate hosts that speak in a curious baby babble (Eh-Oh!), the real rabbits, the laughing baby-faced sun, the magical windmill that signals that it is time for a video clip (with real children) to be transmitted on the chosen tubby tummy, the expert computerised animations, the futuristic dome-home and Noo-noo, the pet vacuum cleaner. Against this unique and creative background, the universal appeal of eight nursery rhymes is added. Children will be mesmerised as the Teletubbies imitate, perform, dance and sing to rhymes including "Humpty Dumpty", "Hey Diddle Diddle", "Pat-A-Cake" and "Twinkle Twinkle". Great care is taken not to frighten little ones. Modern adapted versions of stories ("The Gingerbread Man") and rhymes ("Jack and Jill") omit scary words or actions and the spider in "Little Miss Muffet" is fluffy, bright pink and smiling. King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys feature in two of the three video clips, singing cool jazzed up versions of "The Grand Old Duke of York" and "Hickory Dickory Dock" to an enthusiastic young crowd. It is not difficult to see why pre-schoolers in over 20 countries have found a place in their hearts for this inimitable foursome. The Teletubbies are loving, enthusiastic, curious and most importantly always laughing and having fun! -Tracey Hogan.

Review Teletubbies - Hide And Seek Video [VHS] [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:Join Tinky Winky, Dipsy, La La and Po as they provide 59 minutes of educational fun for one to three year olds in Teletubbies: Hide and Seek. Set against the unique, now-familiar backdrop of Teletubbyland with its futuristic dome-home, rolling hills, pretend flowers, real rabbits and giggling baby-faced sun, the loveable Teletubbies have much to discover: the joys of hiding and looking for each other; laughter when some tubby toast goes missing; and the magic of the wall that appears and disappears. Three video clips (transmitted, of course, on tubby tummies) include real children playing hide-and-seek outside, hunting for eggs on a farm and discovering a chameleon under a leaf. The BBC Teletubby episodes have had phenomenal success since 1997 and one of the reasons for this is that through repetition the Teletubbies give babies and toddlers the power to anticipate what happens next. By gaining confidence in their predictions, youngsters actively participate and this was demonstrated by a normally quiet two-year-old reviewer who was soon laughing, clapping and even running up to the television and shouting "there, there" to Dipsy as he searched for Po. Repetition also helps the very young to learn, and the wall sketch effectively teaches the difference between the words "behind", "in front" and "around". In contrast, surprise actions create humour and the toast incident leads to several minutes of infectious giggling. Children as young as three months love to play "peek-a-boo"-the universal appeal of "hide-and-seek" combined with the much-loved Teletubbies will guarantee frequent and happy viewing among the under-threes. -Tracey Hogan.

Review Ice Age [VHS] [2002] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:The funny and often enthralling Ice Age is a digital re-imagining of the Western Three Godfathers just as A Bug's Life was a computer-animated comedy inspired by Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai. The heroes of this unofficial remake (set 20,000 years ago, during the titular Paleolithic era) are a taciturn mastodon named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano), an annoying sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo) and a duplicitous, sabre tooth tiger, Diego (Denis Leary). The unlikely team encounters a dying human mother who relinquishes her chirpy toddler to the care of these critters. Hoping, against all odds, to return the little guy to his migrating tribe, Manfred and his associates require trust between themselves, not an easy thing in a harsh world of predators, prey and pushy glaciers. If audiences have become accustomed to the rounded, polished, storybook look of Pixar's house brand of computer animation (Monsters, Inc. ), the blunt edges and chilly brilliance of Ice Age-evoking the harsh, dangerous environment of a frozen world-are a wholly different, and equally pleasing, trip. -Tom Keogh.

Review Any Which Way You Can [VHS] [1980] / Warner Home Video:Philo Beddoe (Clint Eastwood) is back in this sequel to Every Which Way but Loose, once again brawling to make ends meet and just trying to manage his life with a crazy mother (Ruth Gordon), a dim-witted best friend (Geoffrey Lewis) and, of course, Clyde the Orangutan. He's had enough of this life but when a mobster (Harry Guardino) comes along to make him an offer he can't refuse, Philo must use his wits as well as his fists to get himself out of yet another jam. The humour is thin and sporadic (though Gordon is on fine form), and Eastwood has since gone on to better things; but a film that features a brawl with a monkey and a motorcycle gang can't be all bad. -Robert Lane.

Review The Thief Of Bagdad [VHS] [1940] / Carlton Visual Entertainment Ltd:Alexander Korda's 1940 version of The Thief of Bagdad offers stirring proof that a strong story and vivid visual sense can still dazzle modern movie-goers without the aid of computer graphics or intricate special effects. Korda wrangled a virtual committee of directors (including a young Michael Powell and visionary designer and art director William Cameron Menzies) and orchestrated a still effective series of optical effects to give this Technicolor fable a striking look that mates cinematic energy with a painterly, storybook aesthetic. Even from a 21st century vantage point, this decidedly pre-digital production remains charming, distilling a familiar tale of genies, evil wizards and exotic adventures into an archetypal heroic quest. In remaking Douglas Fairbanks' hugely popular, technically ambitious 1926 silent production, Korda repositions the title character as a much younger figure with the casting of a teenaged Sabu as the youthful thief, Abu. That shift makes his enemy, the evil Jaffar (Conrad Veidt), much more threatening while giving the fable an innocence the swashbuckling Fairbanks could not supply. In Rex Ingram, the film supplies a genie with a winning contrast in his thundering voice and mischievous smile, while June Duprez provides the requisite beauty to the princess whose fate becomes Abu's test of courage. Fellow Hungarian émigré Miklós Rózsa adorns the movie with one of his earliest and most evocative music scores. It's one measure of this Thief's appeal that at least two more remakes followed, but none have trumped this adaptation. -Sam Sutherland.
