Review From The Earth To The Moon [VHS] [2005] / Warner Vision International:Originally broadcast in April and May of 1998, the epic mini-series From the Earth to the Moon was American cable station HBO's most expensive production to date, with a budget of $68 million. Hosted by executive producer Tom Hanks, the mini-series tackles the daunting challenge of chronicling the entire history of NASA's Apollo space programme from 1961 to 1972. For the most part, it's a rousing success. Some passages are flatly chronological, awkwardly wedging an abundance of factual detail into a routine dramatic structure, but each episode is devoted to a crucial aspect of the Apollo programme. The cumulative effect is a deep and thorough appreciation of NASA's monumental achievement. With the help of a superlative cast, consistent writing, and a stable of talented directors, Hanks has shared his infectious enthusiasm for space exploration and the inspiring power of conquering the final frontier. NASA's complete participation in the production lends to its total authenticity, right down to the use of NASA equipment, launch locations and even spacecraft. The re-creation of the lunar landscape is almost as impressive as the real thing and is further enhanced by the use of helium balloons to lighten the actors playing moon-walking astronauts. With a fictional, Walter Cronkite-like TV reporter (Lane Smith) serving as the dramatic link for all 12 episodes, this ambitious production may not be a great work of art. But as a generous and definitive example of non-fiction drama, it's full of the same kind of awe, inspiration and humanity that led to "one giant leap" in the all-too-short history of 20th-century space exploration. Review Ransom / Crimson Tide / Die Hard With A Vengeance [VHS] [1996] / Cinema Club:Die Hard with a Vengeance: the second sequel to the mould-making action film Die Hard brings Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) to New York City to face a better villain than in Die Hard 2. Played by Jeremy Irons, he's the brother of the Germanic terrorist-thief Alan Rickman played in the original film. But this bad guy has his sights set higher: on the Federal Reserve's cache of gold. As a distraction, he sets McClane running fool's errands all over New York-and eventually, McClane attracts an unintentional partner, a Harlem dry cleaner (Samuel L Jackson) with a chip on his shoulder. There are some truly great action sequences, though these don't completely obscure the rather large plot holes in the film's final 45 minutes. -Marshall Fine, Amazon. comRansom: when it comes to ramping up to vein-bursting levels of tormented anxiety, Mel Gibson has a kind of mainstream intensity that makes him perfect for his heroic-father role in director Ron Howard's child-kidnapping thriller. Trapped in the middle of any parent's nightmare, Gibson plays a self-made airline mogul whose son (played by Brawley Nolte, son of actor Nick Nolte) is abducted by a close-knit group of uptight kidnappers. But when a king's ransom is demanded for the child's safe return, Mel turns the tables and offers the ransom as reward money for anyone who provides information leading to the kidnappers' arrest. Thus begins a nerve-racking battle of wills and a test of the father's conviction to carry out a plan that could cost his son's life. [+]
Through it all, Howard maintains a level of nail-biting tension to match Gibson's desperate ploy, and the plot twists are just clever enough to cancel out the overwrought performances and manipulative screenplay. Remade from a 1956 film starring Glenn Ford, Ransom is diluted by a few too many subplots, but as a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, it's a slick and satisfying example of Hollywood entertainment. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com Crimson Tide: in the typical Don Simpson-Jerry Bruckheimer mould (the partnership yielded Top Gun and Days of Thunder, among many other films), this 1995 drama is a combination of one-dimensional but enjoyable performances, lots of high-tech nonsense taking place onscreen, and mechanistic movie-making at its loudest and most seizure-inducing. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington play nuclear submarine officers squaring off over the former's apparent intention to do some unauthorised damage to an enemy. Director Tony Scott (Top Gun) brings his lustre and pop commercial sense to go with all that Simpson-Bruckheimer eye candy. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review Enter The Dragon [VHS] [1973] / Warner Home Video:One of the most successful martial arts movies of all time, if not the best, Enter the Dragon (filmed in 1973) was Bruce Lee's last completed film and the first significant meeting of Hollywood and Hong Kong cinema. But it wasn't an entirely harmonious marriage, with on-set communication breakdowns and rows resulting in some poor scripting, editing and overdubbing. Lee plays a Shaolin fighter recruited by British intelligence to spy on renegade Shaolin master and crime overlord Han (Shih Kien) by entering the martial arts tournament held on Han's fortress island. If the plot sounds a touch contrived, it is. Han's fluffy white cat, clawed hand and ruthless megalomania suggest nothing so much as a classic Bond villain, and the plot has holes you could pilot a large Junk through (Lee's discovery that his sister committed suicide rather than submit herself to Han's men is particularly weak). Nonetheless, Lee is utterly compelling. At the height of his skills, he choreographed, directed and performed fight scenes which are among the most gripping ever filmed, including the classic underground scene which, in this uncut version, contains Lee's incredible (and previously deleted) nun-chuck display. John Saxon and karate champion Jim Kelly ably support him as fellow contestants, with the massive Yang Sze playing Bolo, Han's lieutenant. Despite being cheesy and overblown, Enter the Dragon is a highly entertaining and accessible Kung Fu film and a showcase for Bruce Lee's considerable skills. -Duncan Thomson.

Review Tokyo Raiders [VHS] [2000] / 4 Front Video:Tokyo Raiders stars Tony Leung (well known from such Hong Kong action movies as Hard-Boiled and Bullet in the Head) along with pop stars Ekin Cheng and Kelly Chen. When Macy (Chen) gets jilted at the altar in Las Vegas, she returns to Hong Kong to find her fiancé has disappeared-but in his apartment she finds Yung (Cheng), an interior decorator with surprising kung fu skills. Together they go to Japan, where they meet up with Lin (Leung), a private detective with an entourage of kung fu babes and stories that don't quite add up. From there, the plot gets more and more incomprehensible. It has something to do with counterfeit yen and a twisty series of double-crosses, but Tokyo Raiders is really about hip clothes and martial arts razzle-dazzle, all framed by the worst dubbed dialogue you've ever heard-sort of a Hong Kong version of The Mod Squad. Leung has demonstrated his acting chops in films like Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love, but he can't make this silliness sound sensible. Still, the actors are sexy, the fight scenes are splashy (if a little confusing), and the movie never wastes too much time getting from one action sequence to the next. A chase that starts out on a motorised skateboard and ends up on a trailer truck hauling new cars is particularly entertaining. -Bret Fetzer, Amazon. com.

Review Dude, Where's My Car? [VHS] [2001] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:An entry into an already rather overcrowded market, Dude, Where's My Car? is a very dumb but exuberant comedy aimed fairly and squarely at the teen market. An attempt to recreate the classic feel of certain movies from the late 80s and early 90s, it centres around two hopeless individuals (Jesse and Chester) and their efforts to piece together the night before and, more importantly, find Jesse's car. The plot-such as it is, takes in many a convoluted turn with the introduction of transsexual strippers and aliens but still finds itself stretched thin over the course of the meagre 79 minutes. The film's aspirations are clear. With it's central duo and infuriating use of catchphrases it is almost a direct steal from Wayne's World and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, both of which are leagues ahead in terms of writing, performance and general style. The humour here is base and far too obvious, concentrating on the old standbys of sex and toilets, plus a small dig at blind children along the way. For a better example of such humour head for the genuinely funny American Pie or, for a teen comedy with actual intelligence and panache, the peerless 10 Things I Hate About You. On The DVD: The extensive range of extra features are in keeping with the overall style of the project. The audio commentary from director Danny Leiner and his two main stars is simply a succession of in-jokes and childish hysterics, while the behind the scenes documentary is equally banal. There is a selection of extended scenes, trailers and TV spots plus a music video from Grand Theft Auto, the best thing about the whole package. [+]
