Callan Pinckney's Callanetics-a programme of non-impact, deep-muscle exercises-has been popular for decades. In this workout, Callanetics AM/PM, Pinckney presents two 20-minute workouts designed for busy people: an AM Class and a PM Class. "You'll get energised in the morning, completely relaxed in the evening, and of course a great body 24 hours a day," Pinckney promises. She is assisted by a small group of people of varying ages and flexibility levels. The AM Class presents some fairly traditional stretches and other exercises that use a ballet bar (you may substitute a piece of furniture). Some of these are very difficult toning exercises because they work the small muscles (of the hip and outer thigh, for example), and most of the movements are either isometric or little pulses. Most exercise professionals would say that working large muscles through a fuller range of motion is a better use of your time, but Callanetics has always had its followers who claim dramatic results. The PM Class, which she calls "meditation in motion", is quite similar to the morning workout, with more emphasis on stretching. New York City Ballet 2, like its bestselling predecessor, is still designed to sculpt and tone your body; but this second edition has also learned the lessons of the original routine, which was difficult to use for those without formal ballet training. This second workout attempts to be accessible to all, providing a glossary explaining ballet terminology and introducing such steps as Plies and Tendus. Be warned though, this will still take practise if you are new to ballet. The routine itself is also less demanding than the first, but includes one of the best abs workouts to be found on an exercise programme. While the steps do not offer a cardio workout, they are enjoyable once mastered and will make you feel more graceful. Combining ballet and yoga is all the rage at gyms, so a good tip is to tie this in with your favourite yoga programme for that ideal posture and definition. All in all this is a great improvement on the first edition and certainly more enjoyable than watching a Big Brother celebrity's dance routine. On the DVD: New York City Ballet 2 offers pristine images and a 5. 1 Dolby sound. This works wonderfully on the choice of classical and contemporary tracks. [+]

If, inside every large woman, there's a thin one longing to get out, TV presenter Vanessa Feltz has proved you can liberate her. Vanessa's workout video starts with a black-and-white retrospective of the fat celebrity we all once knew. In a voiceover, she tells us of the insults she had to endure, such as being called "Mrs Blobby". She was so unfit she couldn't climb stairs and was scared of getting stuck in turnstiles. The video goes colour to reveal the new Vanessa. Her misery ended, she tells us, when her now ex-husband ("ex" is said with relish) issued an ultimatum: "Lose weight, or lose me. " She lost both, and feels all the better for it. She has shrunk from size 24 to size 12. How did Vanessa do it? The answer is Dennis Duhaney, a charming taskmaster with dreadlocks and a London accent. Before launching into Dennis's aerobic exercises, Vanessa explains his eating plan. [+]
Drink lots of water, have five portions of fruit and veg daily, eat little and often, and make your last meal early in the evening. Then, with a warning to anyone with doubts to see their doctor first, the warm-up begins. The exercise routines become progressively harder and faster, moving through Gear One to Gear Four. Essentially, they are variations of marching, boxing and kicking done to the beat of a background soundtrack. Handheld weights come into it towards the end of the video, but Vanessa says tins of baked beans will do just as well. It finishes with a cool down which is vaguely based on yoga. To follow the routines, you'd need plenty of space, and preferably a sprung floor. So, could this video help you lose over four stone in 12 weeks, as Vanessa claims on the video cover? Maybe. You get two 25-minute workouts here: both are low-impact, aerobic routines alternating with intervals of lower-body muscle work using the body's resistance, no weights. The aerobic segments are taught by Fonda and two other instructors. The choreography is simple-nothing more complicated than step-touch, grapevine, heel digs, marches, and hamstring curls-and each move is repeated many times. If you like choreography challenges, this video won't hold your interest, but if you like to keep your choreography simple, or if you are a beginner to aerobic dance, you will be at ease here. The intervals of lower-body training, taught by Fonda, include moves such as stationary lunges, squats (without weights) and standing leg lifts. Both workouts end with abdominals and a stretch. Famous for her bestselling book Rosemary Conley's Complete Hip and Thigh Diet and many other exercise and diet tapes, Rosemary Conley is such an established name in the fitness business that you know that any video from her won't be faddy, but based on solid research that definitely works. There are no fancy clothes and visual tricks here, and the only "prop" you'll need is a solid dining chair for the abdominal section. We are taken straight into the exercise studio where Conley acts as our instructor, describing the moves in a calm, clear voice. The exercises that promise to burn up our surplus flab are divided into five 10-minute sessions, followed by body conditioning and a cool-down. She recommends doing one session each day, with a day off every four days, so as not to overdo things. The idea is to step up our level of fitness gradually, until we can fit the sessions together into one mammoth workout. The people accompanying Conley on the video have all successfully lost weight with her programme. Conley reminds us of this at carefully spaced intervals-"Hayley lost five and a half stone"-to give us a goal and keep us at it. We are instructed to keep our eyes on the individual whose exercise level best suits our own. So we can leap along with Annette, or march with Debbie. [+]
Conley packs many different movements into each session, so you really do feel as if you're working the whole of your body. But be warned, some moves are more difficult than they look, so make sure you clear a big enough space in the living room, and put breakables and the dog out of harm's way! The menu planner at the end is introduced with sensible information and deliciously piled plates, reminding us that, though we may be on a diet, we certainly don't need to starve. -Lorna Read.
