Famous for her bestselling book Rosemary Conley's Complete Hip and Thigh Diet and many other exercise and diet tapes, Rosemary Conley is such an established name in the fitness business that you know that any video from her won't be faddy, but based on solid research that definitely works. There are no fancy clothes and visual tricks here, and the only "prop" you'll need is a solid dining chair for the abdominal section. We are taken straight into the exercise studio where Conley acts as our instructor, describing the moves in a calm, clear voice. The exercises that promise to burn up our surplus flab are divided into five 10-minute sessions, followed by body conditioning and a cool-down. She recommends doing one session each day, with a day off every four days, so as not to overdo things. The idea is to step up our level of fitness gradually, until we can fit the sessions together into one mammoth workout. The people accompanying Conley on the video have all successfully lost weight with her programme. Conley reminds us of this at carefully spaced intervals-"Hayley lost five and a half stone"-to give us a goal and keep us at it. We are instructed to keep our eyes on the individual whose exercise level best suits our own. So we can leap along with Annette, or march with Debbie. [+]
Conley packs many different movements into each session, so you really do feel as if you're working the whole of your body. But be warned, some moves are more difficult than they look, so make sure you clear a big enough space in the living room, and put breakables and the dog out of harm's way! The menu planner at the end is introduced with sensible information and deliciously piled plates, reminding us that, though we may be on a diet, we certainly don't need to starve. -Lorna Read.

Everything about Yoga for Energy is minimal, yet like the concept of minimalism in interiors and fashion, less is more. With no introduction this video assumes some existing knowledge of and interest in yoga. A beautiful, lean man practises silently on a secluded, peaceful beach. A softly spoken male narrator provides the clear and concise instructions. While the title suggests this might feature the more energetic astanga yoga, this is a meditative, deep hatha yoga session with no intrusions. The man and the voice belong to Rodney Yee, a student of philosophy and physical therapy and a professional dancer. Yee flows through every posture in a mesmerising, poetic way. As the sequences progress one or two graceful women join Yee in an almost balletic vision of yoga. Though not immediately obvious the five sequences, filmed on the exotic island of Maui, are intended to connect with different times of the day and states of the body. Gentle warming stretches warm up the body for an initial awakening, standing poses ground and connect, the sun salutation sequence boosts vitality and energy, a series of forward bends initiates tranquillity and finally there is total surrender to relaxation. It's an approach that encourages a thoughtful, solitary and more regular practice and one which is as calming as it is energising and as grounding as it is soul searching. -Lorna V.

It's certainly refreshing to see that lifestyle specialists Gaiam have recognised that the stark division between those who do yoga and those who choose the gym or other sports need not be rigid, and that practising one does not preclude the other. Yoga Conditioning for Sport is not only a satisfying yoga session in itself, it will certainly improve any other fitness pursuit. The tanned and athletic-looking Rodney Yee is one of the leading yoga authorities in the world. He has designed an opening warm-up which works on the spine, hip-joints and shoulders, a conditioning body work-out which improves all-round flexibility and strength, and a final "mindful" cool-down. Yee's instructions are minimal yet precise. While hyper-active gym fanatics might find the pace slow initially, Yee's hypnotic voice, along with his regular focus on the body and sport-opening up tight spots, finding the centre, focusing concentration- provide the necessary motivation. Sufficient close-up shots of the other two sporty-looking teachers enable following the session at different levels. In addition to a simple all round sequence, Patricia Walden's additional workout consists of a wonderful introduction about her own discovery of yoga, training with BKS Iyengar himself and the impact yoga can make on oneself. The New York City Ballet Workout routine was developed by Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet along with the New York Sports Club. If you envy the ballet dancer's long, lean body and graceful, elegant movements, then this beautifully produced video is for you. First watch the rippling muscles of four gorgeous ballet dancers (two bare-midriffed women and two bare-chested men) performing the warm-up moves to classical ballet music, while Martins narrates: no ballet technique is taught, so it's look-and-follow if you have no previous ballet training. Then get down on a mat for slow lower-body stretches. A difficult abdominal series is next, followed by "floor barre" exercises to tone the thighs and buttocks while still using the abdominals, then moves to strengthen the back and upper body. Next is a series of standing exercise segments using various ballet movements to strengthen the legs and postural/balance muscles. The workout is divided into 17 short sections, which may give it a disjointed feeling if you're used to more continuity. At the end is a bonus sequence with profiles of the four performers, all dancers with the New York City Ballet. We get to watch them performing, practicing, and eating. One dancer makes the point that ballet is very athletic, but because it's supposed to look ethereal, the hard work stays hidden from the audience. [+]

Not only does Yoga Basics deliver what its title promises-the basic elements of yoga-it also goes back to basics before yoga became another tool for attaining a perfect body. From an exotic palm tree and beach location, teacher Patricia Walden sets the tone by talking about the spirituality of yoga. Her first instruction is to contemplate one's daily life. Yoga, Walden explains, is a vehicle inwards. Yoga Basics comprises a meditative opening to centre the mind, a core session which goes through basic standing and seated poses, and finally a deep relaxation. Its slow, gentle pace throughout makes this an ideal tool to relieve an anxious, agitated mind, simultaneously providing sound instruction in yoga postures. It's also perfect for those who fear that a total lack of flexibility makes it impossible to practise yoga. The use of props such as cushions throughout illustrates the point that you don't need a bendy body to benefit from this. Initially Walden's American voice comes across as monotonous, and Brits might find her evangelical tone off-putting. However, once absorbed in the yoga, the voice becomes a calming backdrop, rather than an intrusion. [+]
