Review Cindy Crawford - The Next Challenge Workout [1993] / ITV DVD:

This 1993 video is a one-hour workout combining stop-and-start cardio movements that are athletic (no dance) with muscle endurance moves with and without light weights. The cardio section uses moves like jogging, jumping, leg swings and power moves such as fast lunge combinations, squats with jumps, and karate kicks. The lower body strengthening moves include variations of lunges and squats using body weight. The upper-body weight exercises are varied but done too quickly-it's easy to rely on momentum. Some of these exercises are oddly chosen: a number of the exercises that are supposed to work the chest fatigue the shoulders and back long before the chest muscles feel anything, for example. You will certainly feel the many sets of ab exercises, however! After the fitness experts panned Cindy Crawford's 1992 Shape Your Body because of its risky moves, this one was planned under the supervision of C. Thomas Vangsness Jr. , M. D. , Chief of Sports Medicine at the University of Southern California. [+]
Crawford doesn't fling her body as she did in the first one (why didn't her trainer teach her not to do this in the first place?), and she explains how to do the exercises properly. A glossary of exercises at the end emphasises correct form. This is certainly better than Shape Your Body, but unless you're wild about Cindy Crawford, you can find workouts conducted by real fitness instructors that are better designed and demonstrated. -Joan Price.

Famous for her bestselling book Rosemary Conley's Complete Hip and Thigh Diet and many other exercise and diet tapes, Rosemary Conley is such an established name in the fitness business that you know that any video from her won't be faddy, but based on solid research that definitely works. There are no fancy clothes and visual tricks here, and the only "prop" you'll need is a solid dining chair for the abdominal section. We are taken straight into the exercise studio where Conley acts as our instructor, describing the moves in a calm, clear voice. The exercises that promise to burn up our surplus flab are divided into five 10-minute sessions, followed by body conditioning and a cool-down. She recommends doing one session each day, with a day off every four days, so as not to overdo things. The idea is to step up our level of fitness gradually, until we can fit the sessions together into one mammoth workout. The people accompanying Conley on the video have all successfully lost weight with her programme. Conley reminds us of this at carefully spaced intervals-"Hayley lost five and a half stone"-to give us a goal and keep us at it. We are instructed to keep our eyes on the individual whose exercise level best suits our own. So we can leap along with Annette, or march with Debbie. [+]
Conley packs many different movements into each session, so you really do feel as if you're working the whole of your body. But be warned, some moves are more difficult than they look, so make sure you clear a big enough space in the living room, and put breakables and the dog out of harm's way! The menu planner at the end is introduced with sensible information and deliciously piled plates, reminding us that, though we may be on a diet, we certainly don't need to starve. -Lorna Read.

Patsy Palmer's Club Workout is upbeat, it's got a strong beat, and beats most exercise videos for sheer fun. It's filmed in a nightclub where Patsy and her trainer, Niki Wibrow, strut their stuff on the stage to the sounds of get-up-and-dance chart music. "Remember, do what you can and have a laugh", is Patsy's motto. She explains that gyms and diets are not for her, and that dancing is the only exercise she enjoys, especially after she decided to lose a stone in weight and tone up after the birth of her new baby. Enter Niki Wibrow, a pretty dynamic personal fitness trainer, who combines dance moves with exercise. By following the workout routines, Patsy has shed the excess weight, including two inches off her hips, all without dieting. After the warm-up section, the routines-entitled "Crazy Legs", "Slap Happy" and "Jump 'N' Scream"-grow more lively. The combination of Niki's encouragement to "Come on guys", and the irresistible music propels you along. The routines are fairly easy to follow, and none of the exercises is either impossible or dangerous. Another plus is that the workout transfers well to a small space, so it easily can be done in your bedroom or living room. [+]
Patsy Palmer is not a super fitness freak. She's more like the regular girl next door who might be dancing around her handbag. There's a feel-good factor to the video. You get the impression Patsy's genuinely enjoying it, and really having a good laugh. The last time many of us saw Patsy Palmer on the small screen, she was sobbing in EastEnders. It's nice to see that actually she's one of the world's great gigglers. -Joan Byrne.

"Pilates tackles the deep structural foundations of the body", explains instructor Lynne Robinson. "Every movement is performed slowly and with control, which means you can't cheat, and the end result is a body which is long and lean, supple and strong. " This workout presents three 25-minute Pilates-based exercise sessions that aim to change the way you use your muscles. You can choose one to do each day, or put them together when you have the time and inclination for a long workout. Each movement emphasises the core muscles of the abdomen and back. You don't need any previous experience because the introduction shows you how to use these muscles through alignment, stabilising and breathing, and Robinson carefully instructs the nuances of every movement. The mood is quiet and controlled, similar to the concentration of yoga. Workout 1 emphasises creating a "girdle of strength", spinal flexibility, and arm and shoulder toning. Workout 2 keeps working on the stabilisation muscles, and adds buttocks, legs and feet. Workout 3 combines exercises and adds complexity for co-ordination, balance and sensory awareness. [+]
At the end is a relaxation sequence. Robinson is an excellent instructor: knowledgeable, mature, patient and clear. You will need a mat, ankle weights, light dumbbells, pole, towel, tennis ball and cushion. -Joan Price.
