Review The Hotpants Workout / Vision Video Ltd.:For the first few minutes of The Hotpants Workout you might think you've tuned into Top of the Pops, as female dancers in skimpy, shimmery-yep you guessed it-hotpants dance around. Choreographer to the stars Dan Karaty maintains that Kylie and Britney have fantastic bodies thanks to dance. But the opening case study of a real dancer who had to get her figure back after a period of inactivity due to illness is unnecessary. It's only once the charming Karaty goes into the workout that there is no doubt he knows how to put across his point: dance is indeed a fun way to get a good body. The session is divided into six sections which target legs, thighs, burning fat, waist, abs and glutes. "Bounce" features a sexy bounce move, "Slide" is based on a sexy slide from leg to leg, "Rush" is a fast fun section, and by the time you reach the slower "Groove" section you might kid yourself that you're just steps away from looking like Karaty's confident back-up dancers. "Two Step" is the hardest of the six sections in terms of coordination, but it's not impossible. The only disappointing section is the final cooldown. It's not as fun as the rest, and the addition of abs and glutes might complete the fitness aspect but doesn't gel with the rest of the up-beat funky workout. Not for serious fitness fanatics but undeniably fun-and it'll do wonders for your dance-floor cred. [+]

Review Joanna Hall - 5 Steps To Fat Loss / 2 Entertain Video:It would be easy to dismiss 5 Steps to Fat Loss as yet another shape-up and shift fat promise. However, fitness expert Joanna Hall has succeeded in developing an exercise regime targeted at busy working mums. This fitness video is in fact five small chunks of time to get your body fit and toned-a solution to a demanding lifestyle. The sessions are designed to work together or separately and are certainly manageable enough to incorporate into a daily routine. The energising 10-minute postural warm-up is ideal for mornings, and can be followed by the 20-minute aerobic cardio calorie burn. Hall's original 10-minute chair workout using water bottles as props targets thighs and abdominals, while the 20-minute total body tone-up is an all round body toner. Finally the 10-minute flex and lengthen is good for realigning the body and for relaxation. The classic fitness format incorporates details from the Alexander Technique (good for posture), Pilates (good for toning), and yoga (good for flexibility). Hall's own style is down to earth, with tips such as fixing a taut ribbon to the tummy so you know when you're slacking. It's the emphasis on technique that makes these sessions effective. [+]

Review Jane Fonda - Total Body Sculpting / Warner Home Video:As one of the highest-profile American exercise mavens, Jane Fonda knows how to work it, and in Total Body Sculpting, she's working all of it with weights. Setting muscle tone and strength as goals, Fonda has designed the segments of Total Body Sculpting as a pair of complementary 25-minute sequences. Together the two sections achieve maximum efficiency and full-body weight training. As a supplement to an aerobic exercise program, Fonda's Total Body Sculpting is a reliable way to tone muscle without massive dumbbells, steely contraptions, or groaning beefcakes. As Fonda explains early on, the two halves of the video focus in turn on different muscle groups and exercises. Each section features optional hand and ankle weights and combines standing, seated, and floor work. After a two-minute warm-up, Fonda heads for the weights and her series of gently paced exercises. Following upper body, lower body, and abdominal strength work, Fonda finishes with a three-minute stretch to keep your developing muscles limber and resilient. She talks you calmly through each exercise, underscoring what to do and what not to do, listing target muscle groups and explaining future benefits for your posture, your tennis game, and your resistance to injury. Fitting it into your regimen requires only moderate space, minimal equipment, and a commitment of fewer than 30 minutes a couple of times a week. [+]

Review Rosemary Conley's Ultimate Whole Body Workout / Cinema Club:When dieting guru Rosemary Conley declares that the Ultimate Whole Body Workout is her last fitness video, cynics might either be relieved that the population is finally to be spared her evangelical diet-speak, or conclude that she's "past it". However, this programme is not so easily dismissed. There might be nothing new here, but there is no doubt that a great deal of Conley's success comes from her ability to motivate. Conley first runs through the key moves featured in the work-outs, cleverly eliminating the problem of figuring it out during the sessions-and the risk of giving up. The 35-minute aerobic workout and the 20-minute body conditioning session are designed to be done on alternative days, while the final chair programme is for those with limited mobility (including pregnant women) who still want to burn calories. With no expense spared on the original soundtrack, a series of pop hits make this all the more easy to go along with. Conley punctuates her instruction with references to members of her backing team and their weight-loss successes. This is a work-out for the woman committed to being slim against all odds, and for whom dieting is likely to be a lifestyle. -Lorna V.

Review Billy Blanks' Tae-Bo 1: The Future of Fitness / Ilc Prime:"Ah, we're rockin' now, baby!" World Martial Arts champion and occasional action movie star Billy Blanks has become (almost) a household name with his own brand of fitness video, Tae-Bo. It's a simple yet inspired idea: take martial arts and boxing moves (punching, kicking) and turn them into an aerobic dance-style workout that viewers can do in their own living room (providing you move furniture and any fragile ornaments out of range first). No equipment, no dieting, no frills required: just enough space for some shadow-boxing and kicking. The testimony of Tae-Bo converts confirm that it's a high-energy, calorie-burning routine guaranteed to work those muscles and sweat away the flab. On this video our genial, energetic host leads an intensive 30-minute live workout in which you, the viewer, will definitely need all the encouragement he so generously hands out to stay the course-at least for the first time. He launches very quickly into the full workout, so it's a good idea to warm yourself up before starting the tape. Or you can forward to the second half, an instructional session in which Billy introduces all the basic moves of Tae-Bo. This is vitally important as you won't be able to follow the workout routine without some initial practice. Here he is assisted by four women who, disconcertingly for the average couch potato, look like they need no additional toning whatsoever and seem to be made of rubber, so flexible are they when undertaking the stretching and bending exercises. Once you've completed the introduction, rewind to the workout. [+]
Tae-Bo really is fun: as Billy's enthusiasm catches hold and you feel those muscles start to burn you'll understand why it's become the most successful fitness series on video. "Good job, good workout". -Mark Walker.
