Review Just My Luck [1957] / Cinema Club:

For his 1957 movie Just My Luck Norman Wisdom took a gamble on a racing track caper and romped home with another box-office winner. As in his first starring role, Norman is back working in a shop. But where in Trouble in Store (1953) he aspired to become a window-dresser, this time he works in a jewellers and has romantic intentions towards a window dresser, played by Jill Dixon (who had also starred in Wisdom's previous hit, Up in the World (1956)). Deciding it would be easier to win the money to buy her a diamond pendant than work for it all, Norman invests his "hard earned" on the horses at the Goodwood races. The farce that ensues is typically Wisdom, here playing both his usual loveable, accident-prone underdog and his own father. He is given sterling support by distinguished comic actors Margaret Rutherford, Leslie Phillips and a young Joan Sims, just a year short of joining the Carry On team in Carry on Nurse (1958). Odd film fact: Sims was also in 1957's Carry on Admiral, a British comedy with nothing to do with the Carry On series. Norman himself returned playing another duel role in The Square Peg (1958). -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Carry On Sergeant [1958] / Warner Home Video:

The first of the Carry On movies, 1958's Sergeant is rather different from its successors, much more a film of its time (the latter days of National Service) and rather less a bawdy picture postcard. Sergeant Grimshaw (William Hartnell long before Doctor Who) is about to retire and hopes that he can get his last platoon into shape as Champion Platoon of its intake. Unfortunately, the new recruits include the clumsy Golightly (Charles Hawtrey), the barrack-room lawyer Bailey (Kenneth Williams) and the hypochondriac Horace Strong (Kenneth Connor). Love interest is provided by Bob Monkhouse and Shirley Eaton-newlyweds separated by the call-up and reunited by her taking a job in the canteen-and by the pursuit of Horace by Dora Bryan's Nora. The film relies heavily on a mixture of slapstick and paradoxical revelations of character complexity-the obnoxious Bailey nonetheless takes the trouble to coach the incorrigibly dense Herbert (Norman Rossington); the series' later obsession with low comedy only really emerges in the scenes between Horace and the medic Captain Clark (Hattie Jacques). The platoon's eventual coming together as other than total incompetents is predictable, but likable. On the DVD: The DVD has no frills whatever except for a widescreen picture and chapter selections; it has been cleaned up however so that we get a remarkably crisp mono picture and mono sound, which brings out the quality of the military-band score by Bruce Montgomery, who was also the writer Edmund Crispin. -Roz Kaveney.

Review Carry On Teacher [1959] / Warner Home Video:

When Carry On Teacher was released in 1959, the series was still in its infancy but all the familiar constituent parts were already in place. Innuendo, naturally, reigns supreme and on the brink of the permissive 1960s it's surprising what Peter Rodgers and the gang were able to get away with. "Are you satisfied with your equipment, Miss Allcock?", child psychologist Leslie Phillips asks gym mistress Joan Sims. Naturally, it isn't five minutes before Miss Allcock's shorts have split, leading to a series of pants gags. And we're off. For Carry On fans, Teacher contains many of the funniest lines and certainly some of the best performances from the whole series. Kenneth Williams is still acting rather than giving his mannerisms a good work out. Hattie Jacques is establishing her gorgon-with-a-soft-centre-for-the-right-man persona and Charles Hawtrey's birdlike twitching makes him ideal as the precious music teacher. A youthful Carol White and Richard O'Sullivan are among the scheming pupils. But you don't have to be a diehard Carry On fan to appreciate the boisterous, sub-St Trinians comedy. [+]
And thanks to Ted Ray's poignant acting as the headmaster, there's a real moment of Mr Chips-style bathos at the very end. On the DVD: Carry On Teacher doesn't gain much from being presented in widescreen. Much of its appeal lies in its familiarity. All we ask for is a clear print-and in black and white this is diamond sharp-and decent sound quality. The whole thing fits like a comfortable old shoe. But apart from the scene index there are no extras on the disc. Given the cult status of the Carry On films, and the wealth of documentary material which has been made about them and their stars, you'd think something extra could have been offered with the DVD releases to make them a more worthwhile alternative to the video. -Piers Ford.

Review The Naked Truth [1957] / ITV DVD:

In 1957's The Naked Truth Terry Thomas plays a dodgy peer of the realm being blackmailed in the company of Peter Sellers, Peggy Mount and Shirley Eaton by a gutter press journalist, Dennis Price ("Don't try to appeal to my better nature, because I haven't one"). One fascinating element in this picture is the portrayal of those relationships that could be only suggested in a period of tighter censorship, such as Peter Sellers' TV personality and Kenneth Griffith as his dresser, whose gay relationship is only faintly etched in here. More overt is the characterisation of a masculine looking authoress, known only by her initials, but sporting Agatha Christie's hairdo. The moments of slapstick are brought off to a tee, as when the larger-than-life Peggy Mount attempts a suicide drop from her window to be saved by an awning on a shop front. On the DVD: The Naked Truth comes to DVD in 4:3 ratio and with a mono soundtrack. The only extra feature is a trailer. More TT tomfoolery can be found in the three-disc Terry Thomas Collection. -Adrian Edwards.

Review Audrey Hepburn Collection - Special Edition Box Set [1953] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

Roman Holiday: Maybe it doesn't quite live up to its sterling reputation, and maybe the leading man and director were slightly miscast. But who cares? Roman Holiday is the film that brought Audrey Hepburn to prominence, and the world movie audience went weak at the knees. The endlessly charming Hepburn had her first starring role in this sweet romance, playing a European princess on an official tour through Rome. Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she slips away from her protective handlers and goes on a spree, aided by a tough-guy news reporter (Gregory Peck). Roman Holiday is great fun, the location shooting is irresistible and Hepburn embodies an image of chic style that would rule for the rest of the fifties. No coincidence that she won an Oscar, and so did veteran costume designer Edith Head. -Robert HortonBreakfast at Tiffany's: No film better utilises Audrey Hepburn's flighty charm and svelte beauty than this romantic adaptation of Truman Capote's novella. Hepburn's urban sophisticate Holly Golightly, an enchanting neurotic living off the gifts of gentlemen, is a bewitching figure in designer dresses and costume jewellery. George Peppard is her upstairs neighbour, a struggling writer and "kept" man financed by a steely older woman (Patricia Neal). His growing friendship with the lonely Holly soon turns to love and threatens the delicate balance of both of their compromised lives. [+]
Composer Henry Mancini earned Oscars for the hit song "Moon River" and his tastefully romantic score. Director Blake Edwards's elegant yet light touch, George Axelrod's generous screenplay and Hepburn's mix of knowing experience and naiveté combine to create one of the great screen romances and a refined slice of high-society bohemian chic. -Sean AxmakerSabrina Fair: Audrey Hepburn is the delightful, young, eponymous Sabrina, the daughter of a chauffeur who is hopelessly in love with David Larrabee (William Holden), the playboy younger son in the rich Long Island household her father works for. In order to help her forget her woes, Sabrina is shipped off to cooking school in Paris. While there, she befriends a baron who provides a bit of culture-and the encouragement to snip off her childlike ponytail. Upon her return to New York, Sabrina is transformed into a sophisticated woman, and David is entranced by her. However, his older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) has arranged David's marriage to Elizabeth Tyson in order to seal a business merger and thus must steer David away from Sabrina. To do this, Linus takes on the task of wooing her for himself. Full of great dialogue ("A woman happy in love, she burns the soufflé; a woman unhappy in love, she forgets to turn on the oven") and wonderful performances, this film is a romantic masterpiece. -Jenny BrownFunny Face: Fred Astaire plays a fashion photographer based on real-life cameraman Richard Avedon, in this entertaining musical directed by Stanley Donen (Singin' in the Rain). The story finds Astaire's character turning Audrey Hepburn into a chic Paris model-not a tough premise to buy, especially within this film's air of enchantment and surrounded by a great Gershwin score. Based on an unproduced play, this is one of the best films from the latter part of Astaire's career. -Tom KeoghParis When It Sizzles: Filmed on location in Paris, this belaboured comedy stars Holden as a screenwriter who enlists his secretary's help in gathering ideas for an unfinished script. Marlene Dietrich makes a cameo appearance.

Review The Man In The White Suit / Kind Hearts And Coronets (1951) (1949) / WARNER HOME VIDEO S038368:

EALING COMEDY CLASSICS Double Bill. Two of the greatest comedies from the Ealing studiosboth starring the great Alec Guiness,(Lawrence Of Arabia, The Ladykillers, Passage To India & Star Wars) In the 'The Man In The White Suit' Alec Guiness plays a young would-be research chemist who invents a fabric which will never soil or wear out. a perfect invention , or at least so he believes. co-starring Joan Greenwood & Cecil Parker, it's a superb satirical comedy. yhhe second film is one Britain's most famous black comedies, 'Kind Hearts And Coronets' is the story of a mass-murderer (Dennis Price)and the 8 members of a rich family who stand in the way of his family fortune. In a remakable tour-de-force, Alec Guiness plays all 8 members of the family. Co-starring, Joan Greenwood & Valerie Hobson, it's a perfect film. One of the true "greats".
