Review Operation Petticoat [1959] / 4 Front Video:

Blake Edwards's delightful 1959 comedy, Operation Petticoat, stars Cary Grant as a World War II submarine captain whose preference for by-the-book command reluctantly yields to certain realities. Chief among those is that Grant's first officer (Tony Curtis, who impersonated Grant that same year in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot), a shameless hustler, is better than the Navy at delivering whatever supplies the ship and crew need to keep going. But when Curtis sneaks a handful of Philippine refugees and several gorgeous nurses onto the all-male sub, the skipper not only has to cool down his crew but deal with an unexpected feminine influence on ship protocol. The film is a great deal of fun, sprinkled with the director's trademark sight gags (including one of Edwards' best, involving a torpedo and a jeep), and graced with his unmistakable lilt. Grant is in great form, his comic brilliance almost impossibly effortless. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review It Happened One Night [1934] / 4 Front Video:

Director Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) took home every Oscar in the book (well, okay, all the major ones) for this seminal 1934 comedy starring Clark Gable as a hard-bitten reporter who stays close to a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) so not to lose a good story. Funny and sexy, the film is full of memorable scenes often referred to in other films, such as the "Wall of Jericho" (a mere bedcover hung on a clothesline down the middle of the room), and Colbert's famous flash of thigh to stop a speeding car in its tracks. Capra's brisk, urbane brand of wit was a perfect complement to his populist faith in the common man (in this case, Gable's character), and this inspiration makes this film a spirited entertainment and an uplifting experience. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review The Early Bird [1965] / Cinema Club:

The Early Bird reteams Norman Wisdom as "Pitkin" with Edward Chapman's "Mr Grimsdale" for a third and final catalogue of chaos. It also proved the last of seven films Jack Davies wrote for Wisdom, with Wisdom officially sharing the screenplay credit for the first time. However, apart from the introduction of colour, it is business as usual as Norman is the milkman of mayhem attempting to prevent the take-over of Grimsdale's Dairy by a larger, more modern rival. It is the same basic plot that has served from Wisdom's own One Good Turn (1954) to You've Got Mail (1998), and it works well, even allowing Norman to dress-up as a fireman and have fun with his hose. "Mr Grimsdale, did you know that I'm a national hero in Albania?" "Norman, what are you on about?" Odd as it seems, all through the hardest of the hard-line communist years in Albania Norman Wisdom's films were virtually the only movies from the decadent West allowed into the country. Perhaps it's the appeal of the resilient underdog ever battling against the establishment, but even today Sir Norman Wisdom really is one of the national heroes of Albania. A strange-but-true fact perhaps even more unbelievable than any of Norman's classic movies. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review The Producers [1967] / 4 Front Video:

Mel Brooks' directorial debut remains both a career high point and a classic show-business farce. Hinging on a crafty plot premise, which in turn unleashes a joyously insane onstage spoof, The Producers is powered by a clutch of over-the-top performances, capped by the odd couple pairing of the late Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, making his screen debut. Mostel is Max Bialystock, a gone-to-seed Broadway producer who spends his days wheedling cheques from his "investors", elderly women for whom Bialystock is only too willing to provide company. When wide-eyed auditor Leo Bloom (Wilder) comes to check the books, he unwittingly inspires the wild-eyed Max to hatch a sure-fire plan: sell 25,000 per cent of his next show, produce a deliberate flop, then abscond with the proceeds. Unfortunately for the producers (but fortunately for us), their candidate for failure is Springtime for Hitler, a Brooksian conceit that envisions what Goebbels might have accomplished with a little help from Busby Berkeley. Truly startling during its original 1968 release, The Producers does show signs of age in some peripheral scenes that make merry at the expense of gays and women. But the show's nifty cast (notably including the late Dick Shawn as LSD, the space cadet that snags the musical's title role, and Kenneth Mars as the helmeted playwright) clicks throughout, and the sight of Mostel fleecing his marks is irresistibly funny. Add Wilder's literally hysterical Bloom, and it's easy to understand the film's exalted status among late-60s comedies. -Sam Sutherland, Amazon. com.

Review Private's Progress / School For Scoundrels [1956] / Warner Home Video:

England's comic filmmaking duo the Boulting Brothers had several international hits in the 1950s, including such satires of British institutions as I'm All Right Jack (which skewered business and labour),Lucky Jim (higher education) and the 1956 Private's Progress, which took on the military. Boulting favourite Ian Carmichael is wonderful as Stanley Windrush, a university student who interrupts his education for the purely patriotic reason of serving his country as an army officer-and quickly flunks out of training school. Demoted to private, the refined Stanley soon discovers that a soldier's life means keeping company with some rough trade, including a particularly unpolished bloke played by Richard Attenborough. Terry-Thomas is delightful as Major Hitchcock and Dennis Price is very good as Stanley's ever-confounded commanding officer, Tracepurcel. The script eventually veers into a plot about a secret mission to reclaim art treasures confiscated by the Nazis but the film never loses its parodying edge. -Tom Keogh.
