Review Prancer Returns / Universal Pictures UK:Sleigh bells may not ring briskly for this often-somber sequel to the 1989 hit Prancer, but there is plenty to like about its sympathetic characters and wistful storyline. Ten years after the little heroine of Prancer saved a wounded reindeer that might have been a magical member of Santa's flying herd, a friendless boy named Charlie Hooper (Gavin Fink) clandestinely adopts an orphaned buck in the same Michigan town. Convinced that he also has St. Nick's (apparently ever-wandering) Prancer on his hands, Charlie grows determined to lead the deer back to the North Pole. A finely balanced supporting cast (Jack Palance, John Corbett, Michael O'Keefe) brings some interesting textures to this simple tale of redemption and, hey, kids are bound to love the sight of a baby reindeer making himself comfortable in Charlie's bed. Prancer Returns may prove to be a minor holiday classic, worth revisiting every year when the trees grow bare and Christmas is around the corner. -Tom Keogh.

Review Star Wars [1977] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:What's interesting about this video is also what makes it seem amateurish at first: it is neither endorsed nor authorised by 20th Century Fox or Lucasfilm. The result: a montage of interviews with everybody of importance to the Star Wars world-from George Lucas and Liam Neeson to Samuel L. Jackson and Harrison Ford, with intelligently written voice-over narration, and a unique exploration of Star Wars and Star Trek together. This is at once an homage to the Star Wars trilogies and a documentary of its sci-fi precursors, from silent film to Star Trek. Since this collection of interviews isn't authorised by Lucasfilm, you won't find footage of the Star Wars movies here, although you will find terrific snippets from sci-fi milestones such as Fritz Lang's Metropolis. A youthful Carrie Fisher talk about the interplanetary appeal of the original Star Wars, while a 20-years-older Fischer talks about the films' fairytale-like grasp across generations. Young and older Harrison Fords and Mark Hamill give interesting perspectives as well; the video also sports one of the longer interviews recorded with the man inside C-3PO. Besides the actual cast and crew of the Star Wars movies, including The Phantom Menace, there are interviews here with stars as fans, famous people who love the movies as much as anyone: Sharon Stone, Gary Busey, Hugh Hefner, Magic Johnson, Christina Ricci and William Shatner. A fun and provocative look through uncensored interviews across the spectrum at all that is Star Wars, worthy of any fan's archive, this is a must for any serious collection. -Erik Macki.

Review The Hoobs - Funny Faces / Uca Catalogue:The Hoobs continue their quest for knowledge in these two Hoobygalooby episodes from the Channel 4 series for pre-schoolers. Travelling the universe, Iver, Tula and Groove encourage young children to explore the world with them. Each episode begins with a question that the Hoobs seek to answer, generally enlisting the help of the Tiddlypeeps along the way, and follows them as they report their findings to Hubba Hubba Hoob back home. The activities of the Hoobs in the Hoobmobile are interspersed with animated film footage and clips of real children, giving plenty of scope to explore each subject in more depth and supplying additional interest. Each programme provides a springboard for further discussion and offers fun ideas for activities at home or in the nursery, from making masks to drawing mermaids. At the end of each episode the Hoob News provides a recap of the journey-reinforcing the ideas and issues that have been raised along the way. Accompanied by cheerful music and song, mainly provided by the Motorettes-colourful, musical creatures that work inside the engine in the Hoobmobile-the Hoobs stimulate and engage young imaginations with a lively, fun, mix of education and entertainment.
