Review The Parent Trap (1998) (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:

If you were a kid in the early 1960s, then you saw The Parent Trap with Hayley Mills-it's as simple as that. Now Disney has pulled the beloved comedy-about a pair of twins who meet for the first time at summer camp and vow to reunite their long-divorced parents-out of the mothballs and remade it with a decidedly 90s feel. This time, the twins act is performed by newcomer Lindsay Lohan, who plays both Hallie and Annie, who each live with one of their parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson). Adversaries when they first meet at camp, Hallie and Annie become, well, sisters when they figure out that they are siblings. The comedy springs from their efforts to sabotage Dad's impending marriage to the gold-digging Elaine Hendrix, while reintroducing Dad to Mom. Quaid has a nice, loosey-goosey way with slapstick, as does Richardson, who plays a very funny drunk scene. -Marshall Fine.

Review Teletubbies: Big Hug / 2 Entertain Video:

To adults, these colourful cushiony creatures are surreal, but to two-year-olds, they present an accurate depiction of life-or idealised life, anyway. And life should include a lot of hugs, which the Teletubbies deliver prodigiously throughout this 64-minute video. When not embracing, the quartet spends time opening and closing a door that mysteriously appears outdoors among the verdant hills that make up their playground. After they conquer the door, it's time for a little line-dancing and then back to the underground bunker for some Tubby Toast. Their vacuum cleaner, the Noo-noo, helps clean up the remnants, and it's outdoors again to frolic in a rain shower that produces a flower with each drop. The two segments involving real kids are played only once each in this sixth Teletubbies video-unlike the repetition of the television episodes-and involve kids investigating a rabbit warren and having tea with a queen and her runaway crown. Adults either love or loathe the foetal-looking Tubbies, but there is no denying their attraction to toddlers. They do all the things little kids love to do-run, jump and play with vacuums. They just do it in brighter colours. (Ages 1 and older) -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Review The Little Mermaid 2 - Return To The Sea [2000] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Ariel and her husband, Prince Eric, have a little problem with their daughter, Melody, in The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, the sequel to Disney's landmark The Little Mermaid. Melody is threatened by Morgana, the evil sister of the sea witch Ursula (both voiced by Pat Carroll). Before you can say "Briar Rose", Melody's parents decide to keep their daughter's roots a secret, forbidding her to learn about the ocean while Morgana is around. Now the budding teenager secretly frolics in the sea with Ariel's old friends, Sebastian and Scuttle. When she learns the truth from Morgana, Melody becomes an unknowing pawn in her scheme-and Mum has to take to the sea again to help. As with Disney's other made-for-video sequels, The Little Mermaid 2 looks and sounds wonderful (and reunites much of the same vocal talent). Four to nine-year-olds who grew up with the original will certainly enjoy seeing the friends again. A new set of artists has come up with four catchy tunes and some fun new characters, including Tip and Dash, a pensive penguin and his blubbery walrus friend. Yet where Beauty and the Beast had a deliberate Christmas-themed sequel and Pocahontas told the tale of her historical trip to England, the plot here is somewhat forced. It is pretty much a rehash of the first film with different characters. [+]
Tip and Dash are a reincarnation of Timon and Pumbaa and Morgana is exactly like her sister, except thinner. Besides the stellar music, this unneeded sequel also misses another important aspect of the original-heart. -Doug Thomas, Amazon. com.

Review Pokemon - The First Movie [2000] / Warner Home Video:

The world domination of Pokémon begets their first theatrical movie. This adventure is a little more complex and dark than the popular TV series, but kids who live for the show will gobble up this film and ask for seconds. Those baffled by the show's popularity, however, will see nothing better here. Mewtwo, a new type of Pokémon designed by scientists to be the ultimate fighter, decides he wants to rule the world and challenges all the great Pokémasters to battle. Of course, our intrepid heroes Ash, Misty and Brock are there to tangle with Mewtwo and spoil his devilish schemes. The film is a tad more emotional than the show (that is, there is some emotion), with Ash sacrificing himself to defend his beloved Pikachu (but don't you worry, Ash will be just fine). Would you really expect the makers of this worldwide phenomenon to radically change its winning formula? The feature is only 55 minutes long, but there's also a 20-minute short, "Pikachu's Vacation". For the Pokémon novice, this escapade will truly baffle: the narrated tale has virtually no dialogue except Pokémon speaking their names (Bulbasaur, for instance, will only express emotion by using variations of his name: "Bulba, Bulba-SAUR!"). It's a real curio. -Doug Thomas.

Review Pete's Dragon [1977] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Disney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. While the latter is entertainingly rendered, the rest of the film strains to be enchanting and the cast overreaches in a big way. Not for anybody over the age of ten. -Tom Keogh.

Review Oliver And Company (Disney) [1989] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Disney does Dickens in this animated version of Oliver Twist, in which a homeless New York City cat falls in with a bunch of mischievous dogs under the leadership of the appealing scoundrel Fagin. The roots of Disney's success with animation in the 1990s begins with this clever, energetic, atmospheric movie, which succeeds in capturing the grim world Dickens conjured. Lyricist Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid) worked on the songs, the best of which is sung by Billy Joel, who provides the voice of (the Artful) Dodger. -Tom Keogh.
