Review Angela Anaconda [1999] / Vci:Joanna Ferrone and Susan Rose's Angela Anaconda is one of the most inventive and acute animated shows on children's television. Its gawky heroine Angela has a bad attitude to authority and a vivid fantasy-life that makes up for the humiliations of the everyday-her rivalry with the endlessly pretentious Nanette Manoir and the more-or-less intense dislike of her form teacher Mrs Brinks. We have a profound sense that what we are getting is Angela's side of all this but the transformations and endless sufferings through which she puts the targets of her scorn are entertaining enough to make us entirely complicit. The animation technique, combining poster paint backgrounds with almost hyper-real monochrome faces, provides an almost seamless segue from the mundane to the imagined; these six episodes take us to the Moon, the Amazon and the French Revolution while plausibly reminding us at every turn that these are children, in a classroom. -Roz Kaveney.

Review Thumbelina [1994] / Warner Home Video:Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth's films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad "Let Me Be Your Wings" is as good as Disney's best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol' time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid. -Doug Thomas, Amazon. com.

Review Brum - Kitten Rescue And Other Stories / 2 Entertain Video:Quietly tucked away in a car-collection garage, Brum is only conspicuous by his size. When the owner turns his back at the start of the day however, Brum blazes into action; ready to fight crime and do good deeds in the "big town". TV has tried lots of ideas with cars that think for themselves, but never managed to convey the charm that this series offers. Whether it's thwarting the escape of some naughty bank robbers, or saving a newlywed bride who inadvertently steps on a runaway skateboard, the little car with the big heart is always the perfect gentleman. Each episode sets up a crime to solve or dilemma to resolve, and by way of handy ramps and elevators, Brum is cheerily applauded and waved at by the town's residents. Every so often there's an outburst of song that will unite good guys and bad guys alike, and then there's always the sing-along at the end to look forward to. Warning to parents: expect a look of abject disappointment on the face of the tot who discovers their toy cars won't do any of the tricks on TV. -Paul Tonks.

Review A Goofy Movie (Disney) [1996] / Walt Disney Home Video:Even as Disney has revelled in the success of its high-end animated features, it occasionally sneaks a lesser effort into cinemas, based on one of the many TV shows with which it dominates daytime TV. This one is based on perennial Disney favourite Goofy's adventures in domesticated bliss. Goofy is now a single dad; when son Max gets blamed for a prank gone wrong at school, Goofy blames himself and decides that, for his vacation, he's going to get away with Max alone. Of course, this is no treat for Max, who has just met the girl of his dreams and harbours no wish to spend the summer touring America with his square dad. The vacation is one disaster after another, though they aren't particularly funny disasters; the culmination involves Goofy's efforts to get Max backstage at a big rock concert. -Marshall Fine.
