Review Watership Down [1978] / Universal Pictures UK:

Much like Richard Adams' wonderful novel this animated tale of wandering rabbits is not meant for small children. It is, however, rich storytelling, populated with very real individuals inhabiting a very real world. The animation is problematic, sometimes appearing out of proportion or just below par; but it seems to stem from an attempt at realism, something distinguishing the film's characters from previous, cutesy, animated animals. A band of rabbits illegally leave their warren after a prophecy of doom from a runt named Fiver (voiced by Richard Briers). In search of a place safe from humans and predators, they face all kinds of dangers, including a warren that has made a sick bargain with humankind, and a warren that is basically a fascist state. Allegories aside, Down is engaging and satisfying, and pulls off the same amazing trick that the novel did-you'll forget that this is a story about rabbits. -Keith Simanton, Amazon. com.

Review The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other stories[1993] / 4 Front Video:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is among most children's favourite books-and is even better on video. Yes, the pictures are still Eric Carle's signature collage style, a layering of painted tissue paper, and they continue to be accompanied by the simple, repetitive phrases that kids love. What animation adds is even more wonderful artwork that magically springs to life, an aural version of the sounds Carle so carefully describes in his books, and some terrific musical accompaniment. This video contains five popular stories: "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", "Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me", "The Very Quiet Cricket", "The Mixed Up Chameleon" and "I See a Song". Loveable characters abound, and the subjects (insects, planets, family, animals and music) are fascinating to kids. Especially intriguing is Carle's vision of how a song "looks". Brightly coloured musical notes and waves of sound pour forth from a variety of instruments-they dance, swim and metamorphose into animals, plants and almost anything else found in the natural world. By the time "I See a Song" is over, you and your child will be convinced that you really can see a song. It's a great supplement to your favourite books. (Ages 1 to 5) -Tami Horiuchi, Amazon. [+]

Review Kes [1969] / MGM Entertainment:

This was only Ken Loach's second cinema feature but it still ranks as one of his finest and most moving films. Billy, a disaffected young lad living on a soulless Barnsley estate, finds a fledgling kestrel and, for the first time in his life, feels his imagination gripped. With infinite patience-and a book on falconry nicked from a local bookstore-he starts to train the bird. There's no boy-and-his-pet sentimentality here: the relationship between Kes the bird and the puny, taciturn Billy is the kinship, full of wary respect, between two wild creatures, and when Kes for the first time flies free and returns to Billy's wrist, the sense of exhilaration is overwhelming. Although Loach never rams his message home, it's clear that Billy stands for a whole generation of youngsters whose potential, barring some such chance event, will never be even fractionally realised. Chris Menges' photography brings out all the austere beauty of the Yorkshire locations, and Loach draws believable performances from his largely non-professional cast-especially the 14-year-old David Bradley, stunningly convincing as Billy. And anyone who has ever suffered under a bullying, self-satisfied sports teacher will squirm with recognition at the brilliant cameo from the late Brian Glover. -Philip Kemp.

Review Titan A.E. [2000] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

A visual knockout, Titan A. E. is an ambitious animated feature that combines traditional animation, computer-generated imagery and special effects in the service of a science fiction adventure plotted with narrative conventions familiar from Star Wars and Star Trek. Credit directors Don Bluth (An American Tail, The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia) and Gary Goldman with crafting a vivid, convincing look to this deep space saga, which conjures some stunning images: a tense opening sequence climaxing in the destruction of Earth; a watery planet where delicate but deadly hydrogen trees float; joyriding in a starship while pursued by playful "space angels"; and a nerve-wracking journey through a lethal maze of massive ice crystals each qualify as mesmerising sequences in any film context. What's visually stunning proves intermittently stunted on the narrative front, however. Orphaned when the evil Drej atomise Earth, protagonist Cale (voiced by Matt Damon) must journey across space to unlock the mystery of his late father's final project, the Titan spacecraft, in a test of faith and filial identity that echoes Star Wars. The Titan itself ultimately poses a cosmic potential familiar to admirers of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Comical sidekicks (Nathan Lane, Janeane Garofalo, John Leguizamo), a sultry love interest (Drew Barrymore) and a roguish mentor (Bill Pullman) all verge on the generic, narrowly redeemed by dialogue from a writing team including Buffy the Vampire Slayer-creator Joss Whedon. It's likely that Titan's target audience of young males prompted the filmmakers to walk a tightrope between softer family features and more violent, hard-edged anime. Although it's brief bloodshed and coy nudity stops short of more adult terrain, younger viewers might be unsettled by the violence. [+]
Young teens will find the proceedings tamer than the video games and anime fantasies that have influenced it. -Sam Sutherland, Amazon. com.
