Yes, the pictures are still Eric Carle's signature collage style, a layering of painted tissue paper, and they continue to be accompanied by the simple, repetitive phrases that kids love. What animation adds is even more wonderful artwork that magically springs to life, an aural version of the sounds Carle so carefully describes in his books, and some terrific musical accompaniment. This video contains five popular stories: "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", "Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me", "The Very Quiet Cricket", "The Mixed Up Chameleon" and "I See a Song". Loveable characters abound, and the subjects (insects, planets, family, animals and music) are fascinating to kids. Especially intriguing is Carle's vision of how a song "looks". Brightly coloured musical notes and waves of sound pour forth from a variety of instruments-they dance, swim and metamorphose into animals, plants and almost anything else found in the natural world. Review Watership Down [1978] / Universal Pictures UK:Much like Richard Adams' wonderful novel this animated tale of wandering rabbits is not meant for small children. It is, however, rich storytelling, populated with very real individuals inhabiting a very real world. The animation is problematic, sometimes appearing out of proportion or just below par; but it seems to stem from an attempt at realism, something distinguishing the film's characters from previous, cutesy, animated animals. A band of rabbits illegally leave their warren after a prophecy of doom from a runt named Fiver (voiced by Richard Briers). In search of a place safe from humans and predators, they face all kinds of dangers, including a warren that has made a sick bargain with humankind, and a warren that is basically a fascist state. Allegories aside, Down is engaging and satisfying, and pulls off the same amazing trick that the novel did-you'll forget that this is a story about rabbits. -Keith Simanton, Amazon. com.

Review The Tweenies: The Enchanted Toy Shop / 2 Entertain Video:Join the BBC's "fab-a-rooney" foursome in their 95-minute fun-packed Christmas video Tweenies-Enchanted Toyshop. The toyshop is a magical dolls house which links the five episodes. The Tweenies individually enter the shop via their imagination. They shrink and then see the toy of their dreams come alive. Fizz befriends and sings with Penny the Pop Princess, Jake helps Jangles the Clown have faith in himself, Milo meets a true hero in The Little Blue Plane and Bella's aspirations are realised when she directs and stars alongside thespian mice in a theatre. The final episode goes inside the shop once more as Father Christmas wraps these very special presents on Christmas Eve. The video is visually stimulating throughout, with clever interaction between the Tweenies and the computer-generated shop and toys: Milo, looping the loop in his plane is not to be missed. Several themes run through the video, including the ideas that the imagination is a door to a fantastic new world, that appearances are deceptive and that one special toy at Christmas is all a child really needs. The pace is lively with the first four episodes kicking off with action songs including "Five Little Snowmen" (Doodles the dog is the fifth snowman) and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". The pace purposely slows in the last episode with a charming performance of "Starlight". [+]Children will find the video amusing, particularly Jake's spoonerisms, and parents will appreciate humorous references to the adult world including a Woody Allen clown and an excellent pastiche of Abba. This is a sophisticated and colourful video that will captivate the under fives and entertain everyone throughout the Christmas period. -Tracey Hogan.

Review Fantasia 2000 / Walt Disney Home Video:More ambitious in scope than any of its other animated films (before or to come), Disney's 1940 Fantasia was a dizzying, magical and highly enjoyable marriage of classical music and animated images. Fantasia 2000, originally made for the IMAX large-screen format, features some breathtaking animation and storytelling, and in a few spots soars to wonderful high points, but it still more often than not has the feel of walking in its predecessor's footsteps as opposed to creating its own path. A family of whales swimming and soaring to Respighi's The Pines of Rome is magical to watch, but ends all too soon; a forest sprite's dance of life, death and rebirth to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring too clearly echoes the original Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria sequence. But when it's on target, Fantasia 2000 is glorious enough to make you giddy. Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a perfect narrative set to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Donald Duck's guest appearance as the assistant to Noah (of the Ark fame) set to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches is a welcome companion piece (though not an equal) to The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the one original Fantasia piece included here. The high point of Fantasia 2000, though, is a fantastic day-in-the-life sequence of 1930s New York City set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and animated in the style of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld; it's a perfect melding of music, story and animation style. Let's hope future Fantasias (reportedly in the works) take a cue from the best of this compilation. The music is provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, interspersed with negligible intros by Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Itzhak Perlman, James Earl Jones and others. -Mark Englehart.
