Review Rugrats - Artsy Antics [2001] / Paramount Home Entertainment:The Rugrats gang are back and this time they explore their more creative side in the five episodes on this video. Angelica, self-proclaimed leader of the group and a neurotic three year old, tries hard to interest Tommy and his baby friends in artistic activities. Painting, music, ballets-Angelica excels in all, or so she thinks. Fortunately, the babies' good nature and natural gift for entertainment saves the day. Enjoy watching Chuckie and the babies pushed around by Angelica, becoming unlikely post-modern painting geniuses. Relish the vision of the Rugrats left alone in an Art Museum and the inevitable mayhem they provoke. Find out how hyperactive Angelica manages a dance performance to impress her more gifted friend Susie-with the support of twins Lil and Phil, Tommy Pickles and the other babies. Experience the rise and fall of a rock band-baby style. Largely thanks to Nickelodeon, the Rugrats are becoming an integral part of the lives of today's children. Love them or hate them, you just can't ignore them. [+]
Children will love these highly entertaining five mini-adventures. Parents may regret the lack of educational content, especially in a video centred on a more cultured art theme. Nevertheless, the sharp and oh-so real personality traits given to the various characters-from the children mimicking their parents to the grown-ups trying to keep on top of things-deliver a cocktail of good gags and funny situations to be enjoyed. in moderation. -Victoria MacKenzie.

Review Thunderbirds - Episodes 15 And 16 [1965] / ITV DVD:"Filmed in VIDECOLOUR. [explosions, drum roll, music builds to a climax]. and SUPERMARIONATION!" The opening sequence of Thunderbirds is itself a masterclass in Gerry Anderson's marionette hyperbole: who else would dare to make a virtue out of the fact that (a)the show is in colour, and (b)it's got puppets in it? But everything about this series really is epic: Thunderbirds is action on the grandest scale, pre-dating such high-concept Hollywood vehicles as Armaggedon by 30 years or more (the acting is better, too), and fetishising gadgets in a way that even the most excessive Bond movies could never hope to rival. Unsurprisingly, it transpires that the visual effects are by Derek Meddings, whose later contributions to Bond movies like The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker echo his pioneering model work here. As to the characters, the clean-cut Tracey boys take second place in the audiences' affections to their cool machines-the real stars of the show-while comic relief is to be found in the charming company of Lady Penelope and her pink Rolls (number plate FAB1), driven by lugubrious chauffeur Parker, whose "Yes, milady" catchphrase resonated around school playgrounds for decades. (But spare a thought for poor old John Tracey, stuck up in space on Thunderbird 5 with only the radio for company. [+]
) The puppet stunt-work is breathtakingly audacious, and every week's death-defying escapade is nail bitingly choreographed in the very best tradition of disaster movies. First shown in 1964 and now digitally remastered, Thunderbirds is children's TV that still looks and sounds like big-budget Hollywood. -Mark Walker.

Review The 1940's House [2001] / Contender Entertainment Group:Channel 4's The 1940s House capitalised on the success of the channel's The 1900 House by using the same format-combining documentary with reality TV-to explore a different era. Three generations of the Hymer family (Lyn, Michael, their daughter Kirstie and her two sons Ben and Thomas) from Ottley in Yorkshire donned Brylcreem, home knits and red lippy to play house in a West Wycombe semi-detached for 9 weeks, 1940s style. The five episodes, which concentrate largely on the early half of the decade and the war years, are bookended by analysis. The first sets the scene by following the meticulous reconstruction of the house itself and a "Dig For Victory" garden, the transformation of the local shop and the establishment of a wartime cabinet (consisting of scientists and historians) who dictate the family's living conditions in accordance with the progression of the war. The fun really starts in episode two when the Hymers get to grips with blackouts, air raids, food shortages and building an Anderson shelter in the back garden. Life without mod cons doesn't suit them and initially, although there are light-hearted moments, Lyn and Kirstie are prone to a moan. In episode three life gets increasingly difficult when Michael returns to work in Yorkshire, leaving the women to cope with the hardest war years by themselves. The nature of this social experiment achieves a level of involvement that traditional documentaries can't get near. Not only is there enormous detail-the vegetable-root hair dye, the disposal of sanitary towels, the five-inch lukewarm baths-but also the family act as our entry point into a different world. Their experience cannot fail to engage our imaginations and our emotions. [+]
Conditions improve in the fourth instalment with the arrival of large numbers of US military and food parcels, but in the final episode, with the Hymers reflecting back on the 1940s from their everyday lives, we see that doing without has made a lasting impact. Emma Perry.

Review Inspector Gadget 2 [2003] / Walt Disney Home Video:Inspector Gadget 2 sees the unlikely detective with higher-tech gadgets and more special effects. French Stewart (from TV's Third Rock from the Sun) replaces Matthew Broderick as the bumbling detective in a plot that revolves around the glitch-ridden Gadget being replaced by a completely robotised female. Parent Trap's Elaine Hendrix does what little she can with the one-dimensional role of "G2". Still, Gadget falls for his rival and the pair team up with his smart-as-a-whip niece Penny and her brainy beagle for a showdown with Claw. Where Broderick struggled to humanise the caricature of an inept detective in the 1999 original, Stewart doesn't even try. Instead he plays Gadget as a cartoon with endless over-the-top theatrics. The enhanced special effects may placate young viewers, but without the comedy of the original, that's small comfort. -Kimberly Heinrichs.
