Review Teletubbies - Musical Playtime [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:Musical Playtime with the Teletubbies is an irresistible idea, of course. Music comes naturally to these four plush-covered critters who so won the hearts of their intended pre-school viewers while completely baffling their parents. This themed collection is yet another example of how the Teletubbies invite their audience to identify with them, here through an activity that is central to playgroup, school, birthday parties and the world at large. Of course, like their viewers, they not only make music and dance but fall over and laugh a lot, which is the only way to be when you've just been playing a tune on your tubby custard bowls. The episodes of real-world footage are always engaging too, especially as they generally involve groups of children getting up to, well, exactly the sort of stuff which is fun to get up to. Here there's a particularly effective episode featuring a music and dance group working in a school, teaching the bootie-shaking "boom-boom dance". -Roger Thomas.

Review Tweenies - Songs And Surprises [1999] / 2 Entertain Video:Bella, Fizz, Milo and Jake bounce back onto the screen in Tweenies Songs & Surprises, combining the theme of surprise with the high-energy mix of music, role-play and stories that will be familiar to those who know and love the programmes on the BBC. In keeping with the "surprise" motif, there are plenty of the sorts of simple practical jokes that young children love, from whoopee cushions to jack-in-the-boxes, and in a quieter moment Max reads a story about a surprise birthday party, Happy Birthday Amelia. There are also numerous ideas for dressing-up and creative play and ample opportunity for audience participation: at one point the Tweenies grab their Teddy bears and act out "Teddy Bears' Picnic", at another they dress-up as pirates-even Doodles dons an eye patch-and follow a treasure map that Judy has made. This colourful, entertaining and educational video will be a hit with pre-schoolers from one to four years-the music, bright colours and dancing appeal to very young viewers, while older children will love to get up and join in with the words and actions to the songs. -Helen BakerRunning time: 68 minutes approximately.

Review Merlin [1998] / Cinema Club:What kind of guy was the wizard Merlin, anyway? He lives a long time, raises a boy to be a king, props up a Utopian empire with his magic and wisdom, and then watches as it all crumbles under such banal forces as vengeance and betrayal. This four-hour mini-series re-tells the story of Camelot and King Arthur from the perspective of the magic man who sacrifices a great deal to guide mortals toward a better destiny. Sam Neill plays Merlin as an accessible, flesh-and-blood fellow of real passion, powerless to undo the spell of a rival (Rutger Hauer) who has virtually imprisoned Merlin's great love, Nimue (Isabella Rossellini), but gifted enough to counter the treachery of Morgan Le Fey (Helena Bonham Carter) and the wicked Queen Mab (Miranda Richardson). The battle sequences and special effects are striking and original, and it is great fun to see such art-house movie actors as Richardson, Carter, Neill, etc. , in fantasy entertainment the whole family can enjoy. (An unrecognizable Martin Short must be singled out, however, for a wonderful, largely dramatic performance as Mab's sidekick, Frik. ) Directed by Steve Barron (The Adventures of Pinocchio), Merlin is a nice bit of glossy revisionism of a beloved legend. -Tom Keogh.

Review Teletubbies - Busy Day / 2 Entertain Video:In Teletubbies, Busy Day Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po giggle and romp their way through a day filled with Tubby toast, laughter and play. This video has the usual Tubby mix of music, repetition and movement, designed to stimulate children's imaginations, promote speech and increase confidence. Our young reviewers needed little encouragement to join in with the action on screen and when the voice trumpet called out parts of the body for the Tubbies to wash, they had plenty of time to think of the answer, shout it at the screen and perform the actions. All the familiar features of the series are here: reliable Noo-noo who cleans up when Po encounters difficulty with the Tubby custard machine, the gurgling sun and lots and lots of rabbits; and when the magic windmill turns, real children are shown having a busy day too, cleaning their teeth, going for a walk and getting ready for bed. Teletubbies, Busy Day is another delightful glimpse of life in Teletubby land that toddlers will want to see again and again and again. -Helen Baker Running time: 71 minutes approximately.

Review Baby Van Gogh - World of Colours / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Baby Van Gogh is from the award-winning infant-developmental media company Baby Einstein, whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child's curiosity through sight and sound. In the main Theatre section of this disc you'll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Unlike the simpler earlier releases, this is focused on the works of Vincent Van Gogh, who is here represented by a blue sock puppet! To begin with the video seems like something of a nature documentary with flowers in bloom and animals on the move, before we're taken through the colours of the rainbow with sections devoted to the individual colours. For example in Yellow, there are toy chicks, sunflowers, lemons and children playing in yellow paper shavings. All the while, The Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra play us music from Van Gogh's era such as The Blue Danube Waltz, The William Tell Overture, Swan Lake and Flight of the Bumble Bee. This is a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works. On the DVD: Baby Van Gogh is the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show. There's also an Art Exhibit of each of the featured Van Gogh paintings, a Resources section with the aforementioned Video Tutorial and a Toy Chest crediting all the toys used, just in case a certain someone wants one of their own. -Paul Tonks.
