Review All I Want For Christmas [1991] / Paramount Home Entertainment:In this family-friendly holiday film, all Ethan and Hallie want for Christmas is for their parents to get back together. Catherine (Parenthood's Harley Jane Kozak) and Michael (Chicago Hope's Jamey Sheridan) have been divorced for a year and now Catherine's dating a guy no one can stand, including her mother Lillian (Lauren Bacall). Michael, meanwhile, has opened a successful diner, but he misses Catherine. When Hallie (Thora Birch, years before American Beauty) overhears Catherine tell Lillian she and Tony (Kevin Nealon) are planning to marry, she and Ethan (Sweet Home Alabama's Ethan Embry) come up with a plan to strand their parents alone together on Christmas Eve. Hallie even asks Santa (Leslie Nielsen) to help them out. All I Want for Christmas doesn't pack any surprises, but it's suitable for all ages and features lively cameos from Andrea Martin as Lillian's housekeeper and Renée Taylor as Catherine's rodent-fearing wedding planner. -Kathleen C. Fennessy.

Review Flintstones, The / The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas [2000] / 4 Front Video:Kids will enjoy the dinosaurs, gaudy prehistoric decor, and cartoon humour of The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas; but adults will find fewer morsels of entertainment, although the sly performance of Alan Cumming (Eyes Wide Shut) as the Great Gazoo, an alien sent to Earth to observe human mating behaviour is a highlight. The movie begins before Fred (Mark Addy from The Full Monty) and Wilma (Kirsten Johnston from Third Rock from the Sun) Flintstone ever met, back when Wilma was an unhappy rich girl seeking happiness in a less snobby environment. Running away from her smothering mother (Joan Collins!) and an oily suitor, Chip Rockefeller (Thomas Gibson from Dharma and Greg), she winds up at a drive-in restaurant where she meets Betty (Jane Krakowski from Ally McBeal), a waitress who thinks Wilma is actually homeless and invites the runaway to live with her. Our blue-collar heroes, Fred and Barney Rubble (Stephen Baldwin from The Usual Suspects), ask the girls out on a double date, and before long Fred and Wilma bond over bowling. But it turns out that Chip is in debt to a ruthless loan shark and needs Wilma's money, so he invites the couples to his new casino in Rock Vegas, where he plots nefariously to ruin their blossoming love. The plot holds no surprises and the dialogue is clumsy, but there's a blithe dimwittedness to the whole affair that makes it curiously inoffensive. -Bret Fetzer, Amazon. com.

Review Sailor Moon - Episodes 3 And 4 / Mvm:Sailor Moon is a cartoon story about a clumsy, crybaby 14-year-old girl named Serena. Life for Serena is pretty much the same as that of any young adolescent from any suburban town. Until one day she suddenly meets her destiny. Her universe is thrown into chaos when she makes the acquaintance of a strange messenger, a black cat named Luna. Serena learns that she is one of an elite group of warriors destined to find the lost princess of the moon. Serena and the other warriors (the sailor scouts) are champions of justice and must defend the earth and indeed the whole human race from the forces of evil. Luna the cat gives Serena some transformation magic and superpowers, which transform Serena into the pretty soldier Sailor Moon-ready to make her stand against evil. This cartoon, created by Naoko Takouchi, is already a phenomenon on the other side of the Atlantic. The classic struggle between good and evil takes a different shape, away from Titans and Knights, in the form of the "American" girl next door. Children, between the age of 6 and 11 are probably most likely to enjoy the adventures of this heroine. [+]
A few moral messages, about the excess of modern society and its effect on teenagers in particular, pepper this rather classic Japanese production. Each episode is about 20 minutes long and has been granted a U certification-Victoria McKenzie.

Review All Dogs Christmas Carol [1998] / MGM Entertainment:An All Dogs Christmas Carol is another straight-to-video sequel of a so-so animated film. The original 1989 All Dogs Go to Heaven was hardly inspired but contained expert Don Bluth animation and the amusing voices of Burt Reynolds and his gang. Now Steven Weber voices the animated mutt Charlie who is still palling around with the same gang through three movies and an animated series. Here the arch villain, Carface (Ernest Borgnine), gets the traditional Dickens treatment of being visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. The opening number, "When I Hear a Christmas Carol", is a good start, but soon TV-ish animation and the low humour becomes wearing. Kids who like the earlier Dog efforts won't be disappointed, but the entire series can hardly be defined as great entertainment. The saving grace is the foolproof Christmas Carol visitations. -Doug Thomas.
