Review Transformers - Original Series - Vol. 1 / Maverick Entertainment:Back in the 1980s, there were few phenomena bigger than the Transformers. A hugely popular toy line, it also spawned a long-running comic book, a hit feature film and successful animated television series. Transformers-Original Series, Volume One collects five episodes of the hit television series: the epic, three-part "The Ultimate Doom", plus two episodes that have never before been available in the UK ("Fire on the Mountain" and "War of the Dinobots"). Epic in scope, the story of the Transformers was a timeless, if unsophisticated, tale of good versus evil: the heroic Autobots battled to prevent the evil Decepticons from realising their goal of universal conquest. The resulting civil war raged for millions of years, draining the energy resources from their home planet Cybertron and leading the two robotic races to earth. Here, they continue their war, using their unique ability to alter their bodies to take on the form of earthly vehicles, weapons and creatures. In the morass of bad 80s' cartoons, the Transformers shone like a beacon on Saturday mornings-excellent animation (for many in the US and UK, it was their first introduction to Japanese manga, albeit basic) and characters with real personalities and depth (for most children of the 80s, Autobot leader Optimus Prime was a very real hero). For the ever-growing legions of Transformers fans out there, as well as any 80s' nostalgia buffs, Transformers-Original Series, Volume One is required viewing. -Robert Burrow.

Review Pop Idol Tour 2002 / Warner Music Vision:Let's face it: Will and Gareth were always going to be the main draw on the Pop Idol 2002 Tour), the live show that took the kids out of the studio and onto the road. After the drawn-out finale of the TV show, the ones who didn't make it got to strut their stuff in front of thousands of teenage girls all screaming for Will and Gareth. It's a glitzy show, undoubtedly, but there is little here that bears repeat viewing, since we saw the wannabes do this every Saturday night for what felt like a century. Given that, thus far, not one of the other so-called "stars" (after Mr Gates, Mr Danesh and Mr Young) have even troubled the Top 40, this tour seems like 14 minutes more fame than most of them deserved. One for the fans only. On the DVD: Pop Idol 2002 Tour is presented in 16:9 anamorphic and Dolby 5. 1, so it looks and sounds great, but the standard behind-the-scenes feature and split-screen options are dull and hardly provide much of an insight. -Jonathan Weir.

Review Baby Newton - Discovering Shapes / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:With the Van Gogh and other "Baby" programs under their belts, the tots who follow Julie Aigner-Clark's Baby Einstein series will sidle up to Baby Newton expecting a similar exploration of building blocks to brilliance, but this time there's a wrinkle or two. Animation makes its first appearance, and parents steeped in keep-it-simple culture may object to the springy "I Know My Shapes" song, a departure from classical-only video predecessors. Otherwise, the tried-and-true genius launchers of titles past pop up anew-Vivaldi floats through each of five shape segments, and clever puppet shows play quickly and infrequently enough to captivate the under-2 crowd. Plus, talk about well rounded: Clark covers the bases, showing off triangular sails drifting toward the sunset one second and geometric patterns the next. Play it for a departure from skill-building standbys like pop-up books and plastic sorters. For ages 1 to 3. -Tammy La Gorce.

Review Addams Family Values [1993] / Paramount Home Entertainment:This slightly more cohesive follow-up to The Addams Family has the same director, Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), but a better story line. Joan Cusack plays a busty gold digger who ingratiates herself into the Addams home and convinces Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) that she wants to marry him. Besides Lloyd, the cast includes Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia, ideal as those Brontëan lovers, Morticia and Gomez. But Christina Ricci again walks away with the best moments as the chilly Wednesday Addams, making life miserable for two camp counsellors (Peter MacNicol and Christine Baranski) who want her to fit in with other kids. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review Thunderbirds - Episodes 13 And 14 [1965] / ITV DVD:"Filmed in VIDECOLOUR. [explosions, drum roll, music builds to a climax]. and SUPERMARIONATION!" The opening sequence of Thunderbirds is itself a masterclass in Gerry Anderson's marionette hyperbole: who else would dare to make a virtue out of the fact that (a)the show is in colour, and (b)it's got puppets in it? But everything about this series really is epic: Thunderbirds is action on the grandest scale, pre-dating such high-concept Hollywood vehicles as Armaggedon by 30 years or more (the acting is better, too), and fetishising gadgets in a way that even the most excessive Bond movies could never hope to rival. Unsurprisingly, it transpires that the visual effects are by Derek Meddings, whose later contributions to Bond movies like The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker echo his pioneering model work here. As to the characters, the clean-cut Tracey boys take second place in the audiences' affections to their cool machines-the real stars of the show-while comic relief is to be found in the charming company of Lady Penelope and her pink Rolls (number plate FAB1), driven by lugubrious chauffeur Parker, whose "Yes, milady" catchphrase resonated around school playgrounds for decades. (But spare a thought for poor old John Tracey, stuck up in space on Thunderbird 5 with only the radio for company. [+]) The puppet stunt-work is breathtakingly audacious, and every week's death-defying escapade is nailbitingly choreographed in the very best tradition of disaster movies. First shown in 1964 and now digitally remastered, Thunderbirds is children's TV that still looks and sounds like big-budget Hollywood. -Mark Walker.

Review The Land Before Time 5 - The Mysterious Island [1997] / Universal Pictures UK:The fifth instalment in the series finds "leaf gobblers" eating all the vegetation in Great Valley, driving Littlefoot, the young brontosaurus, and the other dinosaur inhabitants out. Arguments break out among the adults during migration, and Littlefoot and his friends decide to take matters in their own hands by crossing the "big water" to an unknown island. There they meet an old friend from The Land Before Time II-Chomper, the T-rex, who has to protect the gang from his own carnivorous parents. Plenty of drama in this one, and as the series has been wont to do from the beginning, it shows adults as sometimes being less than perfect. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.
