Review Chicken Run [2000]:As warming as a nice cup of tea on a cloudy day, Chicken Run is that charming singularity, a commercially successful British family movie that has near-universal appeal without compromising its inherent British pluckiness (that will be the first and last poultry-pun in this review). It invites us into the Plasticine-world of Tweedy's farm, a far-from-free-range egg factory ruled with an axe of iron by greedy Mrs. Tweedy. One intrepid chicken, Ginger (voiced by Julia Sawalha) sets her sights on breaking out the whole flock, a cast of beautifully individuated chicken characters including ditsy Babs (voiced by Jane Horrocks), matronly Bunty (Imelda Staunton) and practical-minded Mac (Lynn Ferguson). Each effort is thwarted, and Ginger repeatedly reaps a spell in the coal bunker for her troubles, prompting the first of many allusions to The Great Escape, one of several World War II films name-checked throughout. (Grown-ups will have a ball playing Spot-the-Allusion Game here. ) When an American rooster named Rocky (Mel Gibson) literally drops in from the air, the hens are set all a-flutter with excitement thinking he'll help teach them to fly away at last. But Rocky is not all he seems. Although the action sags just a fraction around the 40-minute mark, it's the set pieces that really lift this into the realm of cartoon genius: the montage of inept flying attempts, Rocky and Ginger's narrow escape from Mrs Tweedy's new pie machine (an horrific contraption of chomping steel and industrial menace) and the magnificent, soaring climax. Despite the fact British animators (such as the directors, Nick Park and Peter Lord, themselves) regularly scoop Oscars for their short films, our record in full-feature length cartoons has been scrappy at best. [+]
There have been a few highlights-Animal Farm (1955), The Yellow Submarine (1968), Watership Down (1978)-and, er, that's about it really, unless you count The Magic Roundabout: Dougal and the Blue Cat. ChickenRun, made by the Aardman production house who produced the delightful Wallace and Gromit shorts among many other treats, has proved that Britain can compete with the most calculated, merchandised and screen-tested Disney production and win. -Leslie Felperin.

Review Teletubbies [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:Musical Playtime with the TeletubbiesMusical Playtime with the Teletubbies is an irresistible idea, of course. Music comes naturally to these four plush-covered critters who won the hearts of their intended pre-school viewers while completely baffling their parents. This themed collection is yet another example of how the Teletubbies invite their audience to identify with them, here through an activity that is central to playgroup, school, birthday parties and the world at large. Of course, like their viewers, they not only make music and dance but fall over and laugh a lot, which is the only way to be when you've just been playing a tune on your tubby custard bowls. The episodes of real-world footage are always engaging too, especially as they generally involve groups of children getting up to, well, exactly the sort of stuff which is fun to get up to. Here there's a particularly effective episode featuring a music and dance group working in a school, teaching the bootie-shaking "boom-boom dance". -Roger Thomas Teletubbies Nursery RhymesJoin Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po as they provide 65 minutes of educational entertainment for toddlers as young as one in Teletubbies Nursery Rhymes. This, the third Teletubby video, has all the hallmarks of the BBC television show including the cheerful and affectionate hosts that speak in a curious babybabble (Eh-Oh!), the real rabbits, the laughing baby-faced sun, the magical windmill that signals that it is time for a video clip (with real children) to be transmitted on the chosen tubby tummy, the expert computerised animations, the futuristic dome-home and Noo-noo, the pet vacuum cleaner. Against this unique and creative background, the universal appeal of eight nursery rhymes is added. Children will be mesmerised as the Teletubbies imitate, perform, dance and sing to rhymes including "Humpty Dumpty", "Hey Diddle Diddle", "Pat-A-Cake" and "Twinkle Twinkle". [+]
Great care is taken not to frighten little ones. Modern adapted versions of stories ("The Gingerbread Man") and rhymes ("Jack and Jill") omit scary words or actions and the spider in "Little Miss Muffet" is fluffy, bright pink and smiling. King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys feature in two of the three video clips, singing cool jazzed up versions of "The Grand Old Duke of York" and "Hickory Dickory Dock" to an enthusiastic young crowd. It is not difficult to see why pre-schoolers in over 20 countries have found a place in their hearts for this inimitable foursome. The Teletubbies are loving, enthusiastic, curious and most importantly always laughing and having fun! -Tracey Hogan.

Review Fimbles - Let's Find the Fimbles / 2 Entertain Video:When The Fimbles arrived on kids TV in 2002, it unfairly drew comparison with The Teletubbies. Beyond the furry man-sized suits, there's actually a lot more going for the show. It's the perfect successor in many ways, featuring just a few more characters and situations to appeal to children beginning to form and follow words. Within each episode, something is found by one of the three Fimbles (Fimbo, Florrie or baby Pom) who populate the Purple Meadow. Near the Tinkling Tree, they experience the excitement (Fimbling Feeling) of discovering something new and eagerly share it with their friends. This allows for the soothing tones of Roly Mo to relax everyone with a story tailored to the found object. More often than not, the group is joined by the fluffy Mummy and egg family of Bessie and Ribble, whose wise observations always lead to a safety warning or two. The show's real star is left to last: the irrepressible Rockit the frog bounces all over the place causing chaos and hilarity simultaneously. As a format, Fimbles is familiar enough for the kids to know what favourite bit to look forward to. It's also significantly different enough to distance itself from any previous show. [+]

Review Scooby Doo And The Ghoul School / Warner Home Video:Inspired by Hanna-Barbera's popular cartoon series, Scooby-Doo stars in Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School, his second full-length film (made in 1988). Shaggy has accepted a job as a gym teacher at Miss Grimwood's Finishing School for Ghouls, a gothic girls' school that instructs the daughters of frightfully famous monsters such as Dracula, Werewolf, Mummy and Frankenstein. Once Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy get over their spooky welcome, they settle into academic and athletic routines (like scarobic exercises) and enjoy an otherworldly relationship with the delightful Miss Grimwood and her gals. Shaggy prepares his students for a big volleyball tournament against the boys' military academy next door, a setup for all sorts of ghoulish gimmicks. And, of course, there's Back to School Night, where the girls' parents attend an enjoyable Who's Who event of monstrous proportions. Meanwhile, amid all the happy hauntings, Revolta, the Witch of the Web, is scheming to be "the most feared name in the monster world" and to make the girls' school "part of her evil team forever". In a final showdown, the boys and girls must join together to combat the evil Revolta and her spider-bat flunkies. This predictable modern-day cartoon is a disappointing departure from Scooby's classic 1970s episodes, those campy detective romps that were full of lunacy and quirky humour and sprinkled with slapstick suspense. Scooby-Doo fans will also miss his wacky cohorts Freddy, Daphne and Velma, as well as their invincible Mystery Machine. At least the original voices remain the same, namely Don Messick as Scooby and Casey Kasem as Shaggy. [+]
