Review Noddy - Big Video / 2 Entertain Video:Noddy is back with all his friends, not to mention those pesky Goblins, in more gentle tales from what is now a very cosmopolitan Toyland. All our favourite characters are here: sensible Big Ears, mischievous Gobbo and Sly, kind-hearted Tessie Bear and, of course, Mr Plod, the strict-but-fair voice of officialdom who provides much of the humour in each episode. Reassuringly, there are no great surprises in these seven pleasing adventures, which reinforce ideas of friendship and community while delivering a mild moral message at the end of each episode. Review The Adventures Of Huck Finn (Disney) [1994] / Walt Disney Home Video:Huckleberry Finn's age has been scaled down in this 1993 Disney film in order to accommodate star Elijah Wood's young years at the time. But that is not the only concession Mark Twain's great American novel must make to Disney revisionism. Wood's Huck, as adapted for the screen by writer-director Stephen Sommers, is all rascal and only nominally a philosopher, which takes a lot of the soul out of Twain's extraordinary story about Huck's enlightenment while travelling with the slave Jim (Courtney B. Vance) along the Mississippi river. Big chunks of the journey are also minimised in significance, and not just for the sake of storytelling economy. Jason Robards Jr and Robbie Coltrane brighten things up, but overall this is an unnecessarily simplified version of a literary classic. -Tom Keogh.

Review Noddy In Toyland - Noddy's Magic Video / 2 Entertain Video:Traditionalists were of course scandalised enough when the stop-motion animated Noddy TV series featured regional accents and (gasp) positive black characters. God only knows what they'll make of this. Try to keep up: what you have here is an Anglo-American co-production in which stories from the stop-motion series are sandwiched between frantic scenarios featuring live-action children and adult characters and puppets-a kind of Sesame Street in total overdrive. This, of course, seems hopelessly incongruous to everyone except the show's intended audience, which simply takes the whole thing in its stride. Individually, the two elements are commendable anyway; the first live-action episode-involving a parrot and an unstoppable vacuum cleaner-is a particularly fine piece of slapstick, while the original stop-motion stories are as gently rewarding as ever. This DVD is guaranteed to meet with approval from the jingly-hatted one's many young fans. -Roger Thomas.

Review Chorlton And The Wheelies - Happiness Is Dragon Shaped [1976] / Fremantle Home Entertainment:"Jump in we'll take you for a spin/And show you round the Wheelie World". For pretty much anyone between the ages of 25 and 40, merely the opening line of the theme to this crazed slice of cartoon bedlam will be enough to jog memories and pluck heartstrings. For everyone else, a brief synopsis is probably in order. Well, self-evidently there's Chorlton, the least intimidating dragon in television history, whose unexplained arrival among the Wheelies is a constant source of vexation to Fenella, a spectacularly ineffective witch with a base camp at Spout Hall (yes, it's a big kettle) and a cadre of mushroom-like toadies and "spikers" with whom she consorts to bring havoc to Wheelie World. Oh, and she also has a son, who only ever appears as a vast, disembodied foot. In short, Chorlton is a crown jewel for all fans of 70s children's TV at its most unapologetically demented. Happiness is Dragon Shaped, the first five-episode collection, opens with "Happiness is Hatched" (wherein, of course, Chorlton arrives fully formed in Wheelie World via an enormous egg), before proceeding into the titular segment, "Chorlton Says it with Flowers", "The Lost Wheelie" and "Chorlton and the Crimewave". Needless to say, the ever-apopleptic Fenella remains hysterical throughout. -Danny Leigh.
