Review Aladdin And The King Of Thieves (1996) (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:Robin Williams returns as the voice of the hyperactive genie in this, the second direct-to-video sequel to Disney's hit animated feature. Aladdin, the street beggar turned Prince, risks all to find his father among the cut-throat 40 thieves and joins his quest to find a Midas-like stone that turns everything it touches into gold. A significant cut above most made-for-video animation, this energetic adventure largely leaves Princess Jasmine and the genie behind for a father-and-son quest. Guest voice Jerry Orbach suggests Sean Connery with his thick-as-molasses delivery as the master thief Sa'luk and, despite his limited screen time, Williams once again delights with his wild flights of fantasy as the big blue Genie. A rousing tale full of last-minute escapes and spectacular, kid-sized thrills that even parents will find entertaining. -Sean Axmaker, Amazon. com.

Review Teletubbies - Happy Christmas [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:What better time than Christmas could there be for these four likeable, er, things? After all, like the children they really are, the Teletubbies find the whole procedure to be an endless source of wonderful surprises and exciting things to do. They get presents, of course, found with the tree which, in Teletubby Land, just mysteriously appears-exactly as it does to real children, of course (unless they're unfortunate enough to be awake when an effing-and-blinding adult is attempting to manoeuvre it into place). There's also some jolly footage of real children, including a suitably happy bunch choosing and decorating a real tree, and of course it's these sections of "outside broadcasting" which balance the caperings of the four plush poppets so well. Despite the festive theme, this needn't be a Christmas-only video; the whole world is wondrous for the Teletubbies' pre-school audience, so the occasion is perfectly presented as a part of that, no more and no less. -Roger Thomas.

Review Cinderella 2 - Dreams Come True [2001] / Walt Disney Home Video:Disney has once again "sequelised" a classic feature with Cinderella II: Dreams Come True. With smart foresight, the filmmakers choose to go with three snappy short films to comprise this 73-minute feature with the Fairy Godmother granting wishes to various characters. In the opening short, Cinderella must pursue life as queen. Several feathers are ruffled as she brings her down-home ways to the castle (bring the commoners in and open those darn curtains). In the other tales, one of Cinderella's animal pals receives a chance to see the world quite differently and finally, Anastasia, Cinderella's formerly evil stepsister, finds love with a little help. As with the other sequels, the look of the film helps bring the distance between the original and the sequel (here over 50 years) come together seamlessly. Little ones from age four to nine should be entertained while purists may be a bit aghast. -Doug Thomas, Amazon. com.

Review Cool Runnings (1994) (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:Based on an improbable but true story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. -Tom Keogh.

Review Teletubbies - Uh-oh! Messes And Muddles [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:Teletubbies say "Uh-oh!" as well as "Eh-oh!" in this collection of messy, colourful, fun Tubby tales. This BBC show designed for pre-schoolers aims to encourage the integration of listening and watching skills, through combining appealing images with intriguing noises-from the tuning of the radio transmitters, to the gentle whoosh! of the windmill, to the giggle of the Sun baby. Messes and Muddles sees Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po feeling very, very happy-but leaving very messy beds! Then, tubby custard is spilt everywhere, the tubby toast machines goes berserk and a little fluffy cloud floats into the house and fills it from top to bottom-and the little Noo-noo has to suck all the mess up! The Tubbies get together for a dance, and then real-life children from their TV-tummies do a huge painting with their feet and hands, and blow coloured bubbles. -Alison Jardine.

Review Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets [2002] / Warner Home Video:The world's most famous boy wizard dives straight into a darker and more thrilling magical adventure in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It's practically the same set-up-something evil's afoot at Hogwarts; Harry and his pals must put it right-but fans of the books won't be disappointed. Director Chris Columbus, whose artistic licence is necessarily limited by the demands of adapting JK Rowling's phenomenally popular novel, does a spectacular job rendering Rowling's imaginary world: the production design and costumes are fascinating in their own right; such is the impressive attention to detail. Daniel Radcliffe gives a more assured performance here as Harry, though he's not quite strong enough to carry the film without the aid of an excellent ensemble cast of experienced adults, notably a twinkly-eyed Kenneth Branagh. Of course, most viewers will already know what's going to happen as far as the story is concerned, so for them the pleasure in watching The Chamber of Secrets lies in the visualisation of Rowling's magical creations and the verve brought to the action sequences. It's fantastic fun for kids and a good excuse to regress back to childhood for the rest of us. -Laura BushellOn the DVD: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets's first disc offers the film in all its fine widescreen (2. 35:1) and surround-sound glory-it's a shame they didn't think of adding a commentary. The second disc's special features are sparse compared to last year's release, most notably the games, which are simpler and dull in comparison to The Philosopher's Stone. Gilderoy Lockhart's classroom offers nothing magical, and the interviews with teachers and students offer only snippets of the actors' thoughts on their characters. [+]
Don't get over excited about the "Build a Scene" feature as, unfortunately, this is not a miracle of modern DVD technology, but a simple featurette. The real gem on the disc is a 16-minute interview with JK Rowling and Steve Kloves about the transfer from book to screen. -Nikki Disney.

Review Mulan (Disney) [1998] / Walt Disney Home Video:1998's Mulan is solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. The story source is a Chinese fab\ le about a young girl who disguises herself as a man to help her family and her country. When the Huns attack China, a cal\ l to arms goes out to every village, and Mulan's father, being the only man in the family, accepts the call. Mulan (voiced\ by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga) has just made a disastrous appearance at the Matchmaker and decides to challenge soc\ iety's expectations (that she should be a bride). She goes to boot camp, learning to fit in with the other soldiers with some help from her side\ kick, Mushu, a wise-cracking dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). She trains, and soon faces the Huns eye to eye to protect he\ r Emperor. The film is gorgeous to look at, with a superior blend of classic and computer-generated animation. The wickedness is subtle, not disturbing. The film is not \ a fully fledged musical, as it has only five songs (the best, "Be a Man", is sung during boot camp). Eddie Murphy is an in\ spired choice for the comic-relief dragon, but his lines are not as clever as Robin Williams's in Aladdin (1992). T\ hese are minor quibbles, though. The story is strong, and Mulan goes right to the top of Disney animated heroines; she has\ the right stuff. -Doug Thomas Solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. Review The Parent Trap (1998) (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:If you were a kid in the early 1960s, then you saw The Parent Trap with Hayley Mills-it's as simple as that. Now Disney has pulled the beloved comedy-about a pair of twins who meet for the first time at summer camp and vow to reunite their long-divorced parents-out of the mothballs and remade it with a decidedly 90s feel. This time, the twins act is performed by newcomer Lindsay Lohan, who plays both Hallie and Annie, who each live with one of their parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson). Adversaries when they first meet at camp, Hallie and Annie become, well, sisters when they figure out that they are siblings. The comedy springs from their efforts to sabotage Dad's impending marriage to the gold-digging Elaine Hendrix, while reintroducing Dad to Mom. Quaid has a nice, loosey-goosey way with slapstick, as does Richardson, who plays a very funny drunk scene. -Marshall Fine.
