Review Suzanne Cox - The Fix / Imc Vision:Popularly known as Vogue from Gladiators, Suzanne Cox delivers what she promises: a no excuse workout video. The Fix provides three accessible 20-minute workouts aimed clearly at the busy young woman who needs a fitness fix, but either shies away from the gym or can't get round to going. Cox, who wrote and choreographed the video herself, is approachable and straight to the point. Backed by a team of real women, she presents simple workouts which succeed because there are no attempts to surprise or impress. The Traditional Aerobics session is a reminder of why aerobics became so successful back in the 1980s: it's upbeat and fun. Dance Aerobics combines funky dance moves with aerobics, so you could kid yourself this was a dance lesson. And the Firm-up focuses on toning up abdominals, thighs, bums and arms. Even if you can't pick up the simplest of moves, there is enough repetition to get the hang of something on each viewing, and because Cox keeps you moving constantly you benefit at all times. Do all three sessions if you're feeling virtuous, or pick one of the three depending on your mood and time. -Lorna V.

Review Rosemary Conley's Five Day Fat Burner / Cinema Club:Famous for her bestselling book Rosemary Conley's Complete Hip and Thigh Diet and many other exercise and diet tapes, Rosemary Conley is such an established name in the fitness business that you know that any video from her won't be faddy, but based on solid research that definitely works. There are no fancy clothes and visual tricks here, and the only "prop" you'll need is a solid dining chair for the abdominal section. We are taken straight into the exercise studio where Conley acts as our instructor, describing the moves in a calm, clear voice. The exercises that promise to burn up our surplus flab are divided into five 10-minute sessions, followed by body conditioning and a cool-down. She recommends doing one session each day, with a day off every four days, so as not to overdo things. The idea is to step up our level of fitness gradually, until we can fit the sessions together into one mammoth workout. The people accompanying Conley on the video have all successfully lost weight with her programme. Conley reminds us of this at carefully spaced intervals-"Hayley lost five and a half stone"-to give us a goal and keep us at it. We are instructed to keep our eyes on the individual whose exercise level best suits our own. So we can leap along with Annette, or march with Debbie. [+]
Conley packs many different movements into each session, so you really do feel as if you're working the whole of your body. But be warned, some moves are more difficult than they look, so make sure you clear a big enough space in the living room, and put breakables and the dog out of harm's way! The menu planner at the end is introduced with sensible information and deliciously piled plates, reminding us that, though we may be on a diet, we certainly don't need to starve. -Lorna Read.

Review Billy Blanks' Tae-Bo - Vol. 2 [2000] / Ilc Prime:Tae-Bo 2 is the follow-up workout to Billy Blanks' massively successful Tae-Bo: The Future of Fitness. As with the original, it's a two-part tape consisting of a live half-hour workout and an instructional section which introduces the basic moves of Tae-Bo (this is the same segment as the first video). The secret of Tae-Bo is simple: it's a high-energy workout that is easy and fun to do and involves no extra equipment or special preparation. Just makes sure you've got space in your living-room for some shadow-boxing, switch on the tape and off you go. For anyone looking for a more advanced course than the original, this is not it. Tae-Bo 2 is a new workout routine, providing an alternative to the first tape, but goes no further. Thus it's best viewed as an additional session, allowing Tae-Bo enthusiasts a choice of workouts if they get tired of the first tape. Repeating the instructional session from the first tape does seem a bit mean, however, especially as a more advanced workout might have been more useful at this stage. But the infectious enthusiasm of host Billy Blanks goes a long way towards keeping both your interest and energy levels up during the workout. If the elderly lady bouncing and punching with such gusto behind Billy can do it, so can you: go on, as Billy says, "get fit, lose weight, have fun, be strong". [+]

Review Rosemary Conley - The Essential [2002] / 2 Entertain Video:Rosemary Conley's Seven-Day Slim Down is more than a best-of compilation, it's a fitness regime in its own right. The slimming guru might have declared that The Ultimate Body Workout was to be her last, but fans will be delighted that she's gone back on her word to produce a combination of her favourite sequences from her four videos. The seven sessions designed for each day of the week last from 14-25 minutes and address different aspects of fitness: aerobic, toning, targeting certain body areas, incorporating weights and being chair (office) based. With a set that looks like Changing Rooms gone over-enthusiastic, leotards reminiscent of the 1980s, plenty of good old-fashioned aerobic moves, and stomping disco music, this is hardly modern stuff. But Conley knows her market-based on her dieting clubs-and knows that this market laps up her formula. The smiles and glows of her participants featured in the seven sessions are an indication of the adoration accorded to their dieting icon. Cynics might sneer, but you can't fault Conley for once again coming up trumps with a format that works on every level: easy to follow, effective but not exhausting, upbeat, unpretentious and all in all accessible. On the DVD: The Seven-Day Slim Down on disc comes with itemised scenes which makes daily selection painless, plus there is an extra on circuit training. The informative section on menu planning offers comprehensive advice on exactly what to eat and fat-saving tips. Conley's low-fat premise might be out of date in relation to the current high protein-low carbohydrates fashion, but it obviously works for some. [+]
The success stories feature dramatic extremes of super-fat and miserable women turned slim and super-happy. Best of the extras is Conley interviewing her choreographer Mary Morris, a fascinating fitness expert with 30 years experience. -Lorna V.

Review Cindy Crawford - The Next Challenge Workout [1993] / ITV DVD:This 1993 video is a one-hour workout combining stop-and-start cardio movements that are athletic (no dance) with muscle endurance moves with and without light weights. The cardio section uses moves like jogging, jumping, leg swings and power moves such as fast lunge combinations, squats with jumps, and karate kicks. The lower body strengthening moves include variations of lunges and squats using body weight. The upper-body weight exercises are varied but done too quickly-it's easy to rely on momentum. Some of these exercises are oddly chosen: a number of the exercises that are supposed to work the chest fatigue the shoulders and back long before the chest muscles feel anything, for example. You will certainly feel the many sets of ab exercises, however! After the fitness experts panned Cindy Crawford's 1992 Shape Your Body because of its risky moves, this one was planned under the supervision of C. Thomas Vangsness Jr. , M. D. , Chief of Sports Medicine at the University of Southern California. [+]
Crawford doesn't fling her body as she did in the first one (why didn't her trainer teach her not to do this in the first place?), and she explains how to do the exercises properly. A glossary of exercises at the end emphasises correct form. This is certainly better than Shape Your Body, but unless you're wild about Cindy Crawford, you can find workouts conducted by real fitness instructors that are better designed and demonstrated. -Joan Price.

Review Cindy Crawford - A New Dimension [1999] / ITV DVD:When model Cindy Crawford wanted to trim down and firm up after the birth of her baby, she chose trainer Kathy Kaehler, who had gotten herself back in shape after gaining 80 pounds with her twins. This programme includes two short, easy workouts and one long one. Workout A (12 minutes) is a light-intensity routine, mostly stretching with some strength moves such as lunges and abdominal curls (nothing strenuous), with bland background music. Workout B (16 minutes) includes cardio moves that are very simple and low-impact, such as knee lifts and marching, no choreography. You can use light hand weights if you want to add intensity, although your shoulders might tire before your large muscles. Workout B also includes strength moves such as squats, lunges (while picking up playing cards for a balance challenge), crunches, and pushups. Workout C is a full-body workout consisting mostly of muscle endurance with some segments of cardio. The cardio is more complex and intense than in Workout B, but not "dancey"-combinations of marches, squats, and kicks, for example, with or without hand weights. The production is full of visual stimulation: constantly changing views-colour or black-and-white, clear or grainy, insets, beach scene or workout room-and changing camera angles. The workout doesn't stand out as exciting, but it is solid, and if you saw Crawford's awful first workout video many years ago, you'll be thankful that she traded in Radu's unsafe, poorly designed routine for Kathy Kaehler's safe and sane one.
