Review Spider-Man - Once Upon A Time The Super Heroes [2002] / 4digital Media:

The action comes thick and fast in Spider-Man-The Ultimate Villain Showdown as the web-slinging hero faces a host of fearsome foes, not least of which is his own torturous self-doubt. Kingpin, Dr Octopus and the Green Goblin all put in spirited performances in these animated tales from the 1990s, while a flashback to Spider-Man's origins ties the action together neatly. The writing is somewhat heavy-handed in places and the animation cranky, but the four featured episodes are pacy, the villains suitably evil and a hint of darkness lends a pleasing frisson to the drama. On the DVD: there's limited bonus material on the DVD but what's there is generally worthwhile and entertaining. In addition to an extra episode, "Return of the Green Goblin", a "Rogues Dossier" gives an interactive guide to Spider-Man's foes with statistics, trivia and video interviews with our hero's creator Stan Lee. Lee crops up again in the highlight of the bonus material, "Stan Lee's Soapbox", an engaging 20-minute insight into all things Spidey from a man who obviously loves his job. -Helen Baker.

Review Action Man - Vol. 1 - The Call To Action / Walt Disney Home Video:

Action Man, the Call to Action comprises over an hour of non-stop exertion featuring the square-jawed hero with the over-developed pecs. This well-animated film is great entertainment and, although the storyline and dialogue may not be terribly original, it has everything a "Team Xtreme" fan could wish for: gadgets, extreme sport and non-stop action. There is also a proper baddy with a proper baddy's name, Dr. X, and a strong tendency for good to triumph over evil. The action starts immediately with Action Man, Alex Mann, head-to-head with his best friend and rival, Brandon Caine, racing across the rooftops of Paris. Brandon brings the "buddy" element to the story and acts as the catalyst for adventure when he falls into the clutches of the evil doctor. Frankly, Brandon is not very likeable-even before he's been "adapted" by Dr. X-and it's hard to see why Alex and his team, a rag-tag posse of assorted personalities, bother to try and free him. Fortunately they do, enabling Alex to test the AMP Factor, the recently discovered mental ability that allows him to consider every possibility in a flash and perform impossible escapes. This special feature-length episode is followed by a shorter story, Grey Areas in which Alex learns more about the AMP Factor and encounters a beautiful assassin. [+]
The scene is set for further adventures and volume two, Action Man, Storm Front is also available. This video contains some violence, hence the PG classification, but should be suitable for most children aged eight and over. -Helen Baker.

Review X-Men - Vol. 5 - Magneto / Universal Pictures UK:

It took a while for Marvel Comics' X-Men to make it onto the big screen, but in retrospect they were always an obvious target for kids TV. Theirs is the classic tale of teenage alienation, given a comic book twist: when puberty hits, as their peers grow hair in funny places and discover the joys of the opposite sex, certain young people begin to manifest strange super powers. Dubbed "mutants", they find themselves with any number of abilities that set them apart from their human peers. Some can fly, some can fire force-beams from their eyes, some can read minds, some are super-strong, some sprout wings; there are as many different powers as there are mutants. However, normal humans are jealous of mutants, and mutants find themselves hunted and/or ostracised by society. In order to fight this prejudice, the heroic X-Men were brought together as teenagers by the telepathic Professor X and trained to use their powers for the good of all humanity. The animated X-Men series, which first debuted in the early 1990s, remained fairly faithful to the classic comic book series, inheriting several of the more popular characters (Wolverine, Cyclops, Rogue, Gambit, Storm, The Beast, etc) and, for the most part, leaving their personalities intact. Wolverine is still a surly little thug with a heart of gold, although his razor-sharp claws are now mainly used to slice up robots and other machines (less blood that way); Cyclops is their relatively square leader; The Beast is a bookworm, prone to literary quotations at random points in his conversation; and Gambit is the charming Cajun rogue. Unfortunately, the animation of X-Men is, quite frankly, just not up to scratch, especially when judged against the much more stylish Batman: The Animated Series, which was on televisions at the same time. Moreover, the pacing of X-Men is, at times, painfully slow, so the action sequences plod along at a speed that would probably bore most Pokémon addicts. [+]
