Review Steady Eddie - Vol. 2 / Contender Entertainment Group:Steady Eddie-Volume 2 is a 38-minute video that contains two charming animated stories featuring a lovable lorry and his friends, and two five-minute documentary-style films of a real delivery truck. Aimed at preschoolers, the cartoon character Steady Eddie is named after Britain's famous road haulage boss Eddie Stobart whose distinctive, individually named trucks can be spotted by children every day on British roads. The video successfully capitalises on the fascination youngsters have for large vehicles. The 14-minute narrated cartoons are simple and down-to-earth. Steady Eddie is the cheerful truck whose catchphrase "No Problem" rings out in the opening song. He is a good role model for youngsters as he is reliable, polite and helpful: in the first story he provides a temporary classroom in his tanker while a school roof is being fixed, while the second story emphasises the importance of cleanliness and also friendship-Steady Eddie's friends include Jock the Scottish tartan tanker and Loretta the Welsh lorry. The drawings are colourful and the animation is sparse but effective, often limited to facial movements on each character and one activity in the background such as a swing swaying to and fro. The live footage of an Eddie Stobart lorry adds a different perspective to the video, allowing children to gain a real sense of the gigantic proportions of a delivery truck, to view its interior, and to understand how goods reach the supermarket. The cartoons and real-life films complement each other, providing an educational and entertaining video that will be very popular among the under fives. -Tracey Hogan.

Review Care Bears - The Movie [1985] / MGM Entertainment:The Care Bears Movie was essentially a 75-minute commercial to introduce a new toy range, the Care Bear Cousins, disguised as a smarmy story about sharing feelings. The film ushered in a spate of cheap animated films created solely to sell merchandise to children. The plot interweaves the stories of Kim and Jason, two lonely orphans who have given up caring, and of Nicholas, a friendless magician's assistant who is seduced by an evil spirit. The Care Bears resolve everyone's problems, naturally. Years later, the Care Bears' popularity has waned and the film stands as a reminder of one of the less admirable uses of animation. The stars, hearts, rainbows and saccharine songs can't disguise the barefaced commercialism behind the threadbare story. -Charles Solomon.
